Inside...Dear Fisher Community,

The signs of a new fall semester are all around us-The leaves are changing, the weather has become crisp, and campus is once again bustling with activity from both academic and extra-curricular endeavors. The College continues to grow in a variety of aspects and it is the job of the Office of Communications to capture and illustrate many of these changes to the Fisher community.

The Communiqué, Fisher’s staff and faculty newsletter, is an integral forum to communicate information to your colleagues. The goal of the Communiqué is to highlight events and achievements around the college, such as the recent Alumni Reunion (p.2), and employee spotlights (p.8). We welcome submissions that serve an informative purpose such as the Library’s “Who has it and how do I get it?” article on (p.2), or Master Calendar updates (p.3).

As always, submissions for the Communiqué are encouraged and accepted on a continual basis. Submissions or questions may be e-mailed to [email protected].

Note: The Office of Communications is working on developing an online photo gallery on the Fisher College news and events web page entitled “Around Campus.” We will be looking for interesting photo opportunities throughout the course of the year and will use this collection to showcase our students and present a glimpse of campus life. Have a particular event in mind? Contact Jennie Moore, Director of Communications, at [email protected].

Say you just heard about this great new book or old film, and you want to borrow it. The best place to start is on the Horizon, our integrated library system. It’s all here, at: http://www.fisher.edu/library

Click on “Horizon Online Library Catalog” on the left-hand side to search by Title Keyword(s), Author Keyword(s), Subject Keyword(s), and others.

Faculty and staff may borrow two films at a time for two weeks from the Fisher College Library; students may borrow two films for one week. All members of Fisher College community may renew them up to five times, if no one else has requested them.

If an item is not held by the Fisher College Library, but another library within the Metro-Boston Library Network has it, you may click on the tab that reads “Hold this for me” to the right of the title that you seek.

You will be prompted to enter your “Library Card Barcode” (this is a 14-digit number beginning with ‘256’) and your “PIN #” (this has been set as the last four digits of your Fisher College Library barcode). If you can’t find it, let us know, and we will provide it for you. Once the item has arrived at Fisher College, you will be notified via e-mail. You can check your account using the “My Account” tab at the top of the page in Horizon. You will be prompted to enter your “Library Card Barcode” and “PIN #.” Now you can see “Items Out,” “Hold Requests,” and “Notices.” You can renew items here.

If you have not found your book or film, let us know. If it is relevant to our curriculum and the professional and personal inter-ests of the Fisher College community, we will either acquire it for our collection or attempt to secure it through Inter-Library Loan. Finally, contact us with any questions that you have about accessing information or finding library materials.

Happy searching!

HOW TO SEARCH:

Say you want to know if Fisher College has The Great Gatsby on DVD.

Enter Great Gatsby in the box to the right of “Title Keyword(s).”

Whoa! It reads “83 matched great gatsby.”

Don’t panic! Click on “Revise Search” to the right of the “Search” button.

Under “Limits” about half-way down the page, you can choose “Fisher College” and “DVDs.”

Now you have two from which to choose.

The Office of Communications has been exploring alternatives to the current Master Calendar located in Outlook.

In the meantime, “Room Occupied” place hold-ers have been added to assist you in the room-booking process. Please note that these “Room Occupied” notations only serve as a guide to give faculty and staff a better understanding of room availability when considering dates for events.

Individuals should still contact the appropriate person responsible for booking rooms (Diane Riley for the Trustees Reading Room and Ballroom, Kristen Dvorsky for Alumni Hall and the Mall) in order to reserve a room.

Fisher College Goes Green! As of August, 2010, Fisher College has entered into a nine-month contract with the Campus Services Division of EcoMotion for turnkey environmental services.

Fisher College has long valued sustainability and environmental stewardship, and the formation of the Sustainability Committee, in combination with the retention of EcoMotion services, will allow the school to continue this initiative well into the future.

“Sustainability is critical to the future of us all,” stated Joshua McKain, College Librarian. “I am pleased that Fisher has undertaken the initial steps that will make the College more aware of its impact on the Earth, its neighbors more aware of its commitment to the community, and its future students more aware of the College’s greening efforts.”

EcoMotion uses a signature three-step program to implement change in a campus environment. EcoMotion will gather information from all sectors of Fisher College campus, create a list of initial recommendations, and finally work with the college to set initiative priorities for the coming months. The process will be managed by a Campus Services Coordinator, and all recommendations will be considered in terms of cost, money-saving potential, and the ability to attract and retain students.

“It is truly a community building endeavor, and I am excited to be a part of it!” Ann Clarke, Director of Spiritual Life and Outreach Programs, said. “Sustainability integrates so many different areas that everybody can find an avenue to contribute their talents and gifts to the effort.”

An official kickoff to Fisher’s greening initiative took place on October 13. Individuals interested in learning more about the Green Initiative at Fisher College may contact [email protected].
