Thank you for taking the time to find out about volunteering. The information on this sheet takesyou through the easy steps you can take to become a volunteer.
Community Action Suffolk Volunteering Teamwhat do we do?
We work with individuals and organisations to support and develop volunteering in Suffolk. Weadvertise volunteering vacancies and put you in touch with the groups that you want to help.There are four Volunteering Field Officers located in Suffolk covering Forest Heath and StEdmundsbury, Mid Suffolk and Babergh, Ipswich and Waveney and Suffolk Coastal.
So what is volunteering?
.any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit theenvironment or someone (individuals or groups) other than, or in addition to, close relatives.Central to this definition is the fact that volunteering must be a choice freely made by eachindividual. This can include formal activity undertaken through public, private and voluntaryorganisations as well as informal community participation. (Source: Volunteering England)
Volunteeringwhy do it?
People volunteer for different reasons:- To build their confidence and self esteem.
- To make new friends or go to new places.- To make a difference and help in the community.- To show an employer they can keep regular hours and stay committed to a task.- To gain new skills or knowledge.- And to have fun!
Types of volunteer opportunities available: Helping with sport and outdoor activitiessuch as gardening or conservation projects, driving, helping at events, administration andreception, working with older or younger people, befriending, providing advice or information,fundraising, helping in your community, mentoring, or cookingtheres plenty to choose from.We even have one off opportunities that could give you a taste of volunteering, or if you have a
skill that you could offer to a group let us know.
Finding volunteering opportunities
Before you start to apply take time think about what you would like to do, how much time you wantto give and how often you want to volunteer. The quickest, easiest way to become a volunteeris to apply online, using the do-it website and your application will be sent directly to CommunityAction Suffolk. All of the current opportunities are available to view atwww.do-it.org(you canenter your postcode and the distance youre able to travel or search by the activity you wouldlike to do). As we receive new volunteering opportunities they are put onlinewe dont haveany vacancies that are only available if you call into an office.

If you dont have access to the internet, at home or through the library, you can use the below
Registration Form to arrange an appointment to talk to someone face to face. Once we receiveyour completed Registration Form well contact you by phone or email and offer you anappointment at the next Volunteer Surgery in the area you selected on the form and well let youknow who youll be meeting. Prior to the appointment well need you to think about what youwant to do so we are ready to discuss options with you. You will also receive a phone callbefore your appointment to remind you and if you need to cancel and rebook at any time just letus know.
Its an informal discussion with a Volunteering Field Officer, not an interview, and you choose thevolunteering role that best matches what youd like to do.
Ive applied for a roleonlinewhat happens next?
Once we receive your online application well contact you by email to make sure that we have thecorrect details about what youd like to do and once you confirm well pass your application tothe groups you want to help. Theyll then get in touch with you to start their application processor ask you to meet them for a chat. If there are any problems just let us know.
Ive applied and I havent heard anything
We do ask that you allow at least three weeks to be contacted by a group as people can be awayfrom the office for a number of reasons or they are groups run by busy volunteers!

At Community Action Suffolk we know that volunteering can be one of thebest things you dopeople tell us all the time. It doesnt have to be hard or
take much timejust choose something and well help you get started.
