Home & Garden Club closes out the 2015-16 season with beautiful orchids!

The Woodlake Home and Garden Club held its April meeting at the home of Grace Gerwe. Special thanks to Grace for hosting the club and to Pat Alexander and Jan Aschleman for co-hosting. The subject of our program was orchids, and Grace provided helpful information for properly growing and maintaining orchids. Grace’s orchid collection includes 60 plants, including phalaenopsis moth orchids and paphiopedilum ladyslippers, many of which were in gorgeous full bloom. There are over 20,000 different varieties of orchids in the world; and in the tropics, orchids typically grow attached to trees. Some tips for helping orchids thrive include:

• Provide bright, indirect light, such as on a covered porch or what filters through trees.

• Avoid direct sunlight, which will burn the plants.• Water thoroughly about once a week and drain all water

completely from the pot.• Do not water the crown.• Orchids like humidity, so mist often, avoiding the crown.• When fertilizing, use a 20-10-20 fertilizer, ¼ teaspoon per gallon of

water about once per week. Water the plant first, drain thoroughly, then water with fertilizer the following day. This helps prevent the plant from burning.

• Orchids bloom yearly. Phalaenopsis bloom from January through

April lasting two to three months. Never move an orchid when in bud.

• Plant orchids only in orchid mix, never in regular potting soil or dirt.

• Orchids like small pots with their roots shooting up all over.

A brief business meeting followed. • The annual yard sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, and Grace

Gerwe is again coordinating the sale. • Landscaping by the pool is scheduled to begin in April.• The garden club Couples Garden Picnic Party social is scheduled

for Saturday, May 7, at the pavilion. RSVP to Lynn Diggle.

This was the final meeting for the 2015-2016 calendar year. Watch for details via email and the newsletter for information for the 2016-2017 year. Members are encouraged to share their suggestions and ideas for programs at upcoming planning meetings.

Minutes of the Woodlake Homeowners Board meeting, held on Monday, March 13th, 2016 .

In Attendance: Debbie Morris, Kent Haggerty, Rick Hickok, Fred Mansperger, Nick Nickel, Howard van Dijk and Brooks Owings of SCS.

Present prior to the meeting was Linda Hickok to present to the board progress on the next edition of the Woodlake directory. She stated that editing of personal information and updating of the map have been completed. However there were still some decisions yet to be made regarding what additional information should be included within the directory such as covenants, additional advertising etc. The target date for distribution is mid May.

Minutes:The board approved the minutes of the February 15th board meeting as written.

Financials:Brooks reviewed financials as of 2/29/16 stating that overall revenues remain slightly higher than budget while overall expenses remain lower than budget. Also the accounts receivable are in very good shape. The board approved the financials as presented.

Woodlake Dam:The repair of the lake riser system is still on hold as the Lake Association awaits final approval from one last governmental agencies, that being Richland County.

Covenant Violations:There are ongoing issues with a few homes for poor maintenance of homes, lawns and pools plus commercial vehicles parked in driveways. All of these represent clear violation of Woodlake covenants. One home that is currently going thru bank foreclosure needs grounds maintenance and other repairs however the bank has not taken over the home yet, which makes remediation difficult.

Security/Safety:The RAIDS report for 2/15/16 thru 3/14/16 showed an increase in crime for several communities in NE Columbia, however neither Woodlake nor nearby communities had any crime reported.

Maintenance:• Brooks obtained quote to repair both front and rear gates at the pool area. The board approved use of Guardian

Fence Suppliers at a cost of $1,272.• Longtown Trees completed removal of dead tree at the entrance and three trees at the pool area.• Green Earth completed installation of crush and run on the road to the boat yard.• Green Earth is awaiting delivery of Algerian Ivy to replace that which died after their last planting.• Brooks to obtain quote from Green Earth to add additional bushes behind the Woodlake sign at the entrance.• Brooks to also obtain quote to install additional posts along side of cattle gate on dam due to the illegal use of

ATV’s traversing the dam.

Miscellaneous:Debbie to request uniformed officer to direct traffic near the entrance at the Annual Neighborhood Yard Sale. The board agreed to a cost of $150 for the service.

The Woodlake Picnic and Annual Meeting is scheduled for May 1st at the pavilion. Lizard’s Thicket will again be the food vendor.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:15 pm.

The Pavilion is for the use of all residents! Here’s some important information on using the Woodlake Pavilion

Kiddie Play Area:Reminder to ALL dog owners: Dogs are NOT allowed in the kiddie play area at any time. Pet excrement can

be hazardous to the health of young children and pregnant women. - Thank you

Woodlake Pavilion Hours:10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.:

Fridays, Saturdays & HolidaysPlease respect you neighbors by keeping the music

and noise to a reasonable volume.

• Property owners of Woodlake may reserve the Pavilion through the Pavilion Committee, which has the right to approve or disapprove those events. Reservation of the facility will include only the roofed building and lawn patio and will NOT include the pool or pool areas.

• The Woodlake Homeowners Associations, Inc., meetings and organized neighborhood clubs (i.e. Woodlake Women/Woodlake Home and Garden) may use the Pavilion without a deposit. However, reservations will be required.

• After reservations are made a security deposit of two checks, for ($50.00 each) made payable to the Woodlake Homeowners Association is required. One half of the deposit ($50.00) will be returned by mail within seven days after the function, once

it has been determined that the facility was left in the same manner in which it was received. This shall include the proper disposal of all trash and debris, and the return of the key. One half of the deposit ($50.00) will be kept in the Pavilion Fund for maintenance and improvements.

• A Homeowner must be present for all functions.

• All Woodlake Homeowner Association members and their guests must abide by the South Carolina State Liquor Laws.

• The Homeowners should secure a reservation form when making a reservation, which must be displayed at the Pavilion during the function.

• Arrangements will be made to obtain the key to the Pavilion. After your event, please be sure to lock the kitchen door and return the key to the committee.

• Reserving the Pavilion only includes the roof area, the lower patio and the restrooms. It does NOT grant access to the pool. The pool is for the use of Homeowners only, not guests in the Pavilion.

• A land line telephone has been installed on the Pavilion wall closest to the pool. It is for emergency outgoing 911 calls only.

• Privileges will be revoked if rules are not adhered to.

Woodlake Pool Opens for the Season on May 1st!

It’s been a long winter, but finally it’s time to open the pool for the season! Please take this opportunity to review the pool and pavilion rules with your family. They can be found in the back of the Woodlake Directory. These rules were instituted to benefit the entire Woodlake community. The most all-encompassing is:

Please be respectful of our residents’ time enjoying the pool! That includes:

1. No monopolizing the pool, either with floats, toys or group activities.

2. Keep all music/electronic devices’ volume low. 3. Adhere to the maximum number of guest per household: Six.4. Understand that if you have reserved the pavilion for a party,

that does not include use of the pool as well, because that takes away from Woodlake residents’ ability to enjoy their neighborhood pool.

5. Please do NOT prop open either the pool gates or the bathroom doors, for this invites non-residents in the pool or bathroom areas.

A pool “fob” is necessary in order to access the gated pool and the pavilion bathrooms. If you have lost/misplaced your pool fob, call Southern Community Services to order a new one. You’ll need to pick up the replacement at the SCS office at 101 Rice Bent Way, Suite 11 (the road just before the Publix on Hard Scrabble Road), as the fob cannot be mailed. There is a nominal charge for a replacement fob.

Please remember...when leaving the pool area, do NOT leave the umbrellas up! A strong wind can send them flying into the air, causing damage and/or injury!

Together with Woodley’s Garden Center, the Woodlake Home and Garden Club sponsors these awards. Selections are made for the

months of April through October, except for August. There are so many lovely yards in our neighborhood, especially at this time of year, that the

decision is always a difficult one. Previous winners are not eligible for this award for at least two years. Thank you Jim and Heather, and Sheldon

and Jan for helping to make Woodlake even more beautiful.

Woodlake Residents Create Award-Winning Design for Runway Fashion Show!

The Columbia Design League held its annual Runaway Runway Recycle Fashion Show on April 2nd. All entries were made from post consumer items that were otherwise destined for the landfill. With the help of our Woodlake neighbors, Kate Williams and Becky Groth were able to collect over 1000 used dryer sheets and create this dress which was modeled by Woodlake’s Amelia Sniffin, daughter of Peter and Rose Marie. This was Amelia’s first modeling experience and she was fabulous! The dress won the “Pret-A-Porter” (ready to wear) Award. We wanted to thank everyone who donated their dryer sheets, we could not have done it without you! Remember: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Attention Boat and Trailer Owners!After the committee reorganized the lot, they were able to make space for a limited number of boats or trailers. The remaining spaces are available on a first come, first served basis by calling Ron Davis, 743-8527 or email him at [email protected]. When these few spaces are gone, you will be put on a waiting list.

Ridgeview Student Council Wins National Award for the Third Year in A Row!The Student Council has been recognized as a 2016 NASC National Gold Council of Excellence. This honor is awarded to councils that consistently provide quality leadership activities and service to their schools and communities and that demonstrate the highest levels of leadership. Congratulations to all on this wonderful achievement!

Out-going Mail Stolen from Mailboxes!

We have had two incidents of outgoing mail taken out of

mailboxes. Banking information has been compromised as a result.

Please take your mail to the post office, rather than leaving it in the

mailbox for our carrier to pick up. Although more inconvenient, it is

much safer.

Several residents have wondered if we could have a drop box

within the subdivision. When investigated several years ago, we

were told that drop boxes must have a large

number of people that would

utilize it. Woodlake

unfortunately does

not fit into that

category, according

to the postmaster.

Tree. By providing us with your email and/or phone number we can get important information to you that can help keep you and your family safe, and hopefully, reduce the number of incidents. Also, sign up so you can

receive the newsletter right to your inbox! Don’t miss out on all that’s going on in the neighborhood!

SQ Rescue Celebrates Another Happy Adoption!Submitted by: Bev Ryan

Charity will be ready for adoption soon!

Our SQ Rescue foster Charity was rescued from a kill shelter where her days were numbered. She had a broken pelvis and leg after being hit by a car. Charity is recovering very well at our home. She is such a loving and playful puppy. Charity is one year old and is a lab mix. She will be ready for adoption in about a month’s time. We are so grateful that SQ Rescue gave her a second chance at life. SQ Rescue operates on a foster system to prepare rescue dogs for their forever homes. The organization pays for all medication, vet appointments and food. SQ Rescue is a non-profit, “no kill” animal rescue group that has been saving dogs for over 30 years. The organization helps dogs found on the street or in abusive environments. They also pull dogs that are in danger of being euthanized from shelters throughout the state. Please check the website at www.sqrescueinc.org for further information and to see available dogs. The organization holds adoption clinics at Pet Smart three times a month. To learn more about fostering dogs or to make a donation of supplies or cash, please contact Bev Ryan at 803-477-4100.

Please Help Feed Hungry Students on Weekends

Did you know that over 500 students in Richland School District Two do not have adequate food when school is out? Did you know that 48% of Kershaw County School children are on free and reduced lunches.? Two great organizations help provide non perishable food to those students so they leave school on Friday with nutritious meals. The number of children needing assistance keeps increasing and the charities need help.
