News
Bellarine Police Community Support Register will make you think
The register is a safety-net for everyone.
In particular it can assist folk who are
elderly, disabled, living alone, have no
family living locally, don’t have neighbours
or people who stay in regular contact.
The register provides a sticker for your front
door that explains how to make contact. So if your rubbish bin doesn’t go out and your
neighbour is concerned and you don’t answer the door, your neighbour can contact the
register. That’s just one example. Equally, if you’ve told your son or daughter that
you’re part of the register and they phone a few times and fail to get an answer, they
can contact the register to raise an alarm.
The register stores personal information on a confidential database and can only be
accessed by police and other emergency services to assist approved authorities with
information required during medical or other emergencies.
The register is a voluntary service for people living on the Bellarine Peninsula.
It costs nothing to register, just a little time to complete a Registration Form.
Please note, it will make you think – if you don’t have family living nearby, who do you
register as next of kin? Does your doctor know how to contact your family? Who will
look after your beloved pet in an emergency?
Find out more about registering at www.bellarineregister.org.au/join
Been on the ferry yet?
Did you see Kira Fitzpatrick’s letter to the editor in the Bellarine Times?
Kira catches the ferry at 7.00am and arrives in
Melbourne at 8.30am for work.
Public Transport Victoria’s website www.ptv.vic.gov.au/journey#jpsearch%5Baction
%5D=showPlanner suggests that if you only use
public transport from Portarlington and want to
arrive at Southern Cross Station (Spencer Street)
before 9.00am, you have to catch a bus in
Portarlington at 6.14am.
Until water-based travel is recognised as public
transport, just the same as travelling on train
tracks, it’s more expensive than a train if you
travel every day, but certainly not if you travel
occasionally.
As Kira says, the ferry is less wear on your vehicle
and less fuel cost if you drive to Geelong to catch
a train. It means arriving in Melbourne relaxed. If you normally drive, just think travel
under the West Gate Bridge traffic jam – a far better and relaxing experience.
You’re guaranteed a seat on the ferry so no need to take a portable chair as happens on
over-crowded trains.
If you drive and find a free carpark, usually a long distance from a Geelong railway
station, you’ll get wet if it rains ... same goes for walking on the pier to catch the ferry
except it’s only a few metres, not a kilometre.
The ferry timetable is included in each Email Tree under Stay up-to-date. The
Portarlington Community Association has been a long and strong support
Image: arrive at Docklands relaxed to work, visit an exhibit, a matinée performance ...
the list goes on.

Builder appointed for Portarlington Community Health Centre renovation
Bellarine Community Health has announced Geelong building company Trak
Constructions has been appointed to carry out renovations works at the Portarlington
Community Health Centre.
The renovation is part of Bellarine Community
Health’s ongoing capital works and
maintenance program, which aims to provide
modern health facilities that meet the needs of
local communities.
“We’ve been through the tender process and
are really delighted to have appointed a local
company to undertake this work,” said CEO
John Fendyk.
“Trak Constructions will start onsite this month
and we hope the internal phase of the project
will be completed by the end of the year,” he
said.
The renovation will include opening up and
extending two existing rooms to create a flexible, open plan, multi-purpose space.
One of the many benefits of a more flexible space will be the ability to co-locate Bellarine
Community Health’s very popular Physical Wellness Program with other services at the
Portarlington Community Health Centre.
Co-ordinator Sally Bambrook said the Physical Wellness Program was previously run at
the Portarlington site but outgrew the space and can return once the construction stage
is complete.
“It will be wonderful to have the this program in the same centre as our other programs
and services,” said Ms Bambrook.
“We have more than 90 clients registered at Portarlington alone, so they will get the
benefit of modern facilities as well as easy access to our other clinical services,” she
said.
There may be some noise during construction and possible disruption to some access
points.
The renovation has been funded thanks to generous support from the Portarlington
Ladies Auxiliary and a capital works allocation from the board of Bellarine Community
Health.
Some renovation plans are still on display in the reception area at the Portarlington site.

renovation plans.
Win a Personal Locator Beacon by completing this survey!
Maritime Safety Victoria (MSV) is all about keeping people safe
on the water, and they are giving away 4 Personal Locator
Beacons (PLB) for completing their paddling survey. If you've
paddled a kayak, canoe, standup paddleboard or surf ski/ocean
ski on Victorian waters in the past 12 months, take the survey
here.
The results of the survey will help MSV to ensure paddlers
have access to the information that they need to paddle safely
on Victorian waters and help to target useful information more
appropriately for the needs of paddlers.
Why should you help?
Victorians own around 242,000 non-powered vessels, including kayaks and canoes.
Portarlington Community Email Tree Wednesday 28 September 2016
Unfortunately, Victoria has the highest number of kayak fatalities in Australia and New
Zealand - 30% of overall boating fatalities in the past five years compared with 13%
nationally. It seems that paddlers' safety awareness and trip preparations are not
keeping pace with the popularity of this activity.
Once analysis has been completed, the report will be published on MSV's website and
will guide future policy development. Note that the report will not contain personal
information relating to individuals or commercial operators.
Further information - If you have any queries regarding this initiative, please contact
Lisa Faldon on (03) 9655 9791 at Maritime Safety Victoria.
Have your say: Marine and Coastal Act Consultation Paper
The Victorian Government will create a new Marine and
Coastal Act to improve the management of our marine
and coastal areas. Our coast is special and important to
all Victorians and is a treasured place for us to live, visit
and work. Healthy coastal and marine environments
support biodiversity, wellbeing, business and recreation.
Submissions are now open on the Marine and Coastal
Act Consultation Paper and will close on Sunday 23
October 2016 at midnight AEST. The Marine and Coastal Act Consultation Paper has
been prepared with the guidance of an expert panel. The paper explores Victoria's vision
and values for a healthy coastal and marine environment and discusses the strengths of
the current system.
To get involved in the conversation and to download a copy of the Consultation Paper
visit Have Your Say at Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and
provide them with your preferred email address. By registering to provide feedback you
will automatically receive email updates on the project. Details of public consultation
events can also be found. Your feedback will help inform the development of the new
Act and important changes to our marine and coastal environments.
