The NFL is celebrating Super Bowl 50 by sending gold commemorative Wilson footballs to every high school that has produced a player who has

appeared in a Super Bowl, an initiative they have dubbed “The Super Bowl High School Honor Roll”. Klaus WILMSMEYER delivered Lorne Park’s

football personally.

Wilmsmeyer graduated from Lorne Park Secondary School in 1988, and accepted a full scholarship to the University of Louisville as a punter. He

was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1992, where he played for three years, winning Super Bowl XXIX in the process. Wilmsmeyer spent the

following two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, and then wrapped up his career as a Miami Dolphin, retiring in 1998.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a non-competitive, internationally recognized program designed to encourage young people to develop positive skills and lifestyle habits.

My sister Nickie and I completed it as independents but we did it through girl guides (we offer it to the girls in our unit and we did parts of the award with them, hence the girl guide uniforms). We recieved our awards along side of about 150 other participants. My sister and I did the entry level gold which consisted of Participants must be at least 16 years of age to begin the Gold. This level has 5 sections. Participants must demonstrate consistent commitment in Service, Skill and Physical Recreation for a minimum of 12 months. An additional 6 months on a section of choice is required for Direct Entrants (we chose to do 18 months for our skill). The Adventurous Journey is 4 days and 3 nights, (plus the two practice journeys) and the Residential Project is 5 days and 4 nights. This level takes a minimum of 12 months to achieve for Silver Award Holders or 18 months for those who go directly into Gold.

SANTA CLAUS

Photos with Santa is THERESA BAIRD’s way of giving back to the community. This annual event started in the Port Credit Lighthouse and has now grown to need to space of Clarke Memorial Hall. Instead of standing in line for hours at the mall, children can sit and colour, have cookies and hot chocolate, write a letter to Santa or play with other children while waiting less than 10 minutes for Santa. Plus, they are more than welcomed to stay as long as they want after having their pictures taken. It’s the perfect opportunity for parents to create special memories with their children and all the hi-res photos are emailed for free so that the memories can last forever! It’s truly a heart-warming way to bring joy to children during this festive season.

March 20th, 2000. With one CASA classroom

and 2 teachers the school quickly grew. The

following school year Young Minds had two

full CASA classrooms and started a Toddler

program, which quickly grew as well.

The owner Carolyn Cronyn-McGuire began searching

for the perfect location to open up a Montessori school

in 1998. After looking at all that was available in

Mississauga, the perfect location was found, Clarkson

Village. A quaint community in South Mississauga,

the location could not have been more perfect. After

months of planning and building, the school was finally

going to open its doors.

YMost of my staff have been here since we opened our doors, or soon

after. It is so great that we have all grown together and built the

successful school that exisits today.

We provide a variety of programs in 3, 4 and 5-day options. We do

full days with extended hours you to drop off and pick up your child

between 7:30 am - 6:00 pm, or you can do school day only where

you may drop off at 8:45 am and pick up at 3:30pm. Both programs

include a lunch and 2 snacks made by our onsite chef.

French lessons are offered daily once children reach the 2.5 year age

group and then once the child reaches the 4-6 year age group they

receive French throughout the day in the Montessori program plus

a 30 minute lesson. Children in their graduate year are working on

both English and French writing books and activities.

We also offer extracurricular after school activities, which include:

Karate, Kindermusik and Monkeynastix.

CHEQUE PRESENTATION TO ARMAGH HOUSE

ROYAL LEPAGE SHELTER FOUNDATION set up a fundraiser to climb Machu Picchu in support of women’s shelters. Each participant was to collect at least $5,000 in donations and pay their trip expenses. 60 Royal LePage people signed up, of which Loretta Phinney fully participated. The climb was a challenge but nowhere near the challenge that battered women and children face every day of their lives. Loretta not only met the challenge of the climb, often leading the way, she was also the top fundraiser. It is a great honour to present a cheque for $41,000 to the Armagh House in support of their work in the community.


Gilbert, or as his owner affectionately calls him, Gribby,

is an Applehead Siamese cat. Applehead Siamese differ

from their other Siamese cousins by having a rounded

face, like an apple, as well as a bigger, heavier body.

John Addie, Gilbert’s owner, is a 82 year old deaf man

who inherited Gilbert from his previous owners when

they purchased a dog. Gilbert would have nothing to

do with the dog and promptly began to visit John at

his home for longer and longer periods of time until

the original owners simply gave him to John. They

have been companions for the last 10 years. Gilbert

is distinctive in that he does not possess the normal

loud meow that is a common trait amongst Siamese

but he still makes his presence known by head butting

John or by jumping on his stomach when he wants

attention. Gilbert is not a shy cat!

T hese savoury stuffed squash are an easy accompaniment to a festive meal or casual weeknight dinner. The meaty mushrooms add beautiful texture to the stuffing, while the apples add a layer of tartness and bite. >>>

D I R E C T I O N S

• Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C.

• Cut acorn squash in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds. Season the inside with salt and pepper. Place cut side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Bake about 30 minutes or until soft.

• Meanwhile, in a large sauce pan heat olive oil. Add mushrooms and sauté for 3-4 minutes. Add celery and continue to sauté for 5 minutes. Lower heat and add apples. Continue to cook until apples become tender, about 5 minutes. To the pan add but-ter, sage, and vegetable stock. Heat just until butter is melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

• Place chopped walnuts and diced bread in a large bowl. Pour warm vegetable stock mixture over bread. Using your hands toss the bread until it is well coated and most of stock is absorbed.

• Remove squash from oven and turn it cut side up. Divide the stuffing among each squash half; spoon the stuffing into the cavity of each squash until filled. Return to 350°F/175°C oven and bake until stuffing is golden brown, approximately 15-20 minutes.

• Serve hot alongside a festive ham or weeknight roast chicken.

GORDON GRAYDON MEMORIAL S E C O N DA R Y S C H O O L

ACADEMIC PATHWAYSGordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School continues to be extremely busy for members of the school community. The grade 12 students are planning pathways with the support of their parents/guardians, teachers and guidance counsellors. Many senior students have been on tours, of various post-secondary schools, to determine which program best suits their interests and career options. The remainder of the student body has been examining their post-secondary pathways by researching various international businesses (in our International Business and Technology program) or exploring their creative side through portfolio preparations (in our Graphic Design Management program). With the committed and dedicated staff at Graydon, students are receiving amazing support in determining which pathway works best for each student.

WHAT’S HAPPENING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM?The fall sports teams have concluded and many of our athletes obtained personal/team bests. The coaches developed students’ skills, in all our fall sports, enabling them to be very strong contenders in regional competitions. The winter athletic season is now well underway, with basketball, volleyball, swimming, table tennis (and many other sports) keeping students involved in athletics. There are also a number of clubs/organizations that have been active since the start of the school year. Most recently, the school’s DECA team competed in the Peel Regional competition. Many of the students received finalist status and medals. Gordon’s We School and Robotics Clubs are busy planning a number of local, provincial, national and international events that highlight the incredible talents developed by the students at Gradyon.

On Thursday, November 26th, Graydon’s School Council hosted Nancy Whetter, a psychotherapist, specializing in work with adolescents and adults in the areas of stress, depression, anxiety and A.D.H.D.

The evening was well attended by many of the parents/guardians of Graydon students. The question/answer session provided parents/guardians with a number of strategies in supporting their child with mental health issues/concerns. The next School Council meeting is Thursday, February 25th. We are, once again, hoping to have a solid turnout of parents/guardians.

UPCOMING EVENTSEach year, Gordon Graydon comes alive with the sounds of theatrics and music throughout the hallways. This year, Theatre Graydon, will be performing the Tony Award winning Musical, In the Heights. The musical is based on a Washington Heights community (in Manhattan) and how they support each other through good times and bad. The show will run May 4-6, 2016. This year, the school’s Hospitality students, will be hosting a “Night at the Theatre”. Guests will have an amazing dinner, before the show; in the school’s cafeteria. This will occur Friday, May 6th performance. Tickets will go on sale soon. Stay tuned!

Students will be recognized for their contributions to the school, community and strong academic commitment at the bi-annual Principal’s Reception. Those honoured will be invited to the event, along with their parents/guardian, Friday, December 11th. The event is being held in the school’s Learning Commons from 10:00 am - 11:00 am.

WINTER BREAKParents/Guardians are reminded that there will no classes, for students, Monday, December 21st - Friday, January 1st. Classes will resume Monday, January 4th.

Students at LP are in the midst of preparing for course selection for the upcoming year. Grade assemblies have been taking place informing students of the process. Many parents reading this whose children are not yet in high school may be familiar with My Blue Print, the engine Peel uses for students to plan the educational path and select courses in high school. You can gather more information by going to the school’s website (lpspartans.ca), and clicking on the Course Selection link on the left hand side of the main page.

As we move past the mid point in the semester, many of the activities in the school are reaching their peak. In athletics the senior boys football team had a great season, culminating in a disappointing loss to St. Roch in the ROPSSAA championship. The Junior Boys Football, Girl’s Flag Football and Boy’s Volleyball teams went to the playoff round as well. Cross Country, Girl’s Basketball, Boys and Girls seven a side Rugby were all sports that we also offered this fall. Winter sports are now starting up, including Girl’s Volleyball, Jr. Boy’s Basketball, Boys and Girls Hockey, Swimming, Curling and Alpine Skiing.

School Life


The SHSM in Sport is continuing to grow in popularity as students explore the opportunities related to sport as well as developing healthy life habits.

Students are also identifying themselves as interested in challenging Advanced Placement exams in grades 11 & 12 for this coming May.

In the arts, our vocal night took place in at the end of November with performances from the school’s various vocal ensembles. The student in the school’s band and wind ensembles are in the midst of preparations for their Christmas Concert coming December 10th. Students in the drama program are rehearsing their entries in this year’s Sears Festival Drama competition coming in the new year.

A big focus at LP is community. Our Students Activity Council (SAC) is very active in fund raising to support a variety of charities throughout the year and students will be engaged in a number of fundraising events this coming month in the effort.

PCSS also supports LYNC (Love Your Neighbor Committee) creating Christmas baskets for needy families. The weather may not show it, but it is “starting to look like Christmas” at PCSS.

PCSS got into the Halloween spirit with our Student Activity Council organizing the fun and ending with some creative costumes on the Friday before Halloween.

November a month of lots of celebrations, Commencement ceremonies for our 2015 graduates on November 9th, and the opening of the Library Learning Commons on November 18th. Ruqaiyah Baksh our Valedictorian, and Principal Abedeen Remtulla spoke at our the commencement ceremony. It was great to see last year’s graduates and hear their stories about where they are now.

Music was provided by the PCSS Chamber Strings.

The Regional Strings went to Roy Thompson Hall to play with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. It was a great concert experience for the students to have the opportunity play in an amazing theater and with professionals.

Later in November, Dr. Kizas and the Strings students hosted a Ontario Strings Association Youth Orchestra under Maestro William Rowson.

LEST WE FORGET. We have had the pleasure of hosting one of our local war vets from WWII Andrew Irwin who spoke to our Grade 10 History class.

The school commemorated Remembrance Day with assembly and a live playing of the Last Post over the school speakers, followed by a moment of silence. Our Visual Art students created works of art to line our Auditorium Hall in appreciation for the sacrifices made for our freedoms.

A small group of students went to the Port Credit Cenotaph to lay a wreath as a sign of respect for our veterans. The students enjoyed having a chance to talk with the veterans and representatives from the Canadian Forces. SPORTS:Fall sports have ended for, Boys Football, Girls Flag Football, Cross Country, Jr. and Sr Volleyball, Varsity Girls Basketball.

WINTER SPORTS ARE STARTING:Wrestling, Swim Team, Sr. Boys Hockey, Jr. and Sr. Boys Basketball and Girls Volleyball.
