Don’t BUY a homewithout watching this first:

www.TheHappyHome.caFor excellent

www.ColetteRabba.comcall or text 416.832.3579

Many of us watch television shows about home buying,

staging or home renovating to educate ourselves

before we take the leap to either sell or buy a home.

I hate to break it to you, but real life is not always

like what we see on TV.

There are so many people behind the scenes preparing the homes before

the cameras even started rolling. (Thank you to those hard working

people – I wish my home were as gorgeous as some of the homes I

see on TV!) The production companies make the homes look better for

added “wow” factor or shock value. There are professional decorators,

contractors and “fluffers” to make the homes look spectacular. They

use the best lighting, the most expensive fabrics and furnishings – and

then we wonder why our homes don’t look like this!

The television industry also makes house hunting look fun and easy.

Behind the scenes, the Realtor has shown these homebuyers dozens

of homes, months in advance (watch how the seasons change) do not

to mention that “life” happens. Circumstances change, people get laid

off during the home search, they get pregnant or maybe there’s a death

in the family. They don’t show any of that on TV. They can’t condense

all that into a half hour!

As a Realtor I help my clients “roll with the punches” that life throws

at us. I set you up for success no matter what happens. It’s about you,

your timing and your comfort level. I don’t advise my clients to even

making an offer on a home without knowing that they’re financially and

emotionally ready to do so.

I pride myself on being a great communicator. I help with so many

aspects during the home search. I guide my clients, explaining not

only the big stuff like negotiating and the agreements, but with the fun

stuff too – like sharing design ideas, possible renovation costs or even

knowing what plants in the garden are worth keeping! I love seeing

my clients happy in their new home. I take pride in knowing I did my

best in helping them make the best decision for them and their family.

T E S T I M O N I A L :

Our Realtor, Colette Rabba, was wonderful to work with. She always gave

us her full attention and kept us up to date on the latest listings. Colette

was flexible and patient as our criteria for buying a home changed...

(frequently) and always accommodated last minute requests. She

worked around our schedule and understood our needs as a growing

family. Her strong negotiation skills paid off in the end. We would not

hesitate to have her as our realtor again. - Lauren H.

My family includes two dogs and a cat and, while I cherish them, it does make it more difficult to keep the house clean. If I had the ability to go back and redesign my home, there are a few things I’d do differently to make living with the dogs a bit easier. Here are some thoughts:

F L O O R I N G M AT E R I A L .Dogs can cause a great deal of wear and tear on floors - without the right type of flooring material they will soon leave their mark - one way or another. Most types of carpet are poor options, trapping pet dander, hair and odours.

GOOD: Area rugs or carpet tiles (which can be replaced easily) are good options.

BETTER: Wood floors are more resilient than carpet, but can become scratched. Some very hard woods are good choices.

BEST: Tile is the best choice of flooring for houses with dogs. It can be cleaned easily and is hardy enough to stand up to rambunctious pets.

P E T B OW L S A N D F O O D .Pet food and bowls can take up a lot of space depending on the size of your dog and the size of bag their kibble comes in.

GOOD: Invest in large plastic containers for dog food so you don’t have to go reaching into the bag at every meal. Put a rubber placemat on the floor to aid in clean up.

BETTER: Customize a dog food bin. In our house, we had a tall but narrow cupboard that would only have been good for trays or cookie sheets. We converted it to a pull out bin for dog kibble. Call a handy man and see if he can do the same to one of your little used cupboards.

BEST: Some of the latest kitchen designs take dogs into consideration, for example by creating an out-of-the-way space for them to eat such as under a counter or building feeding dishes into a bottom drawer that can be slipped away when not in use.

C O M I N G I N .Dogs go out in all types of weather and frequently come in wet or dirty.

GOOD: Put down a rubber mat and keep a towel by the door. Teach your dog to wait until he gets the “All Clear“ before he heads off the mat.

BETTER: If possible use an entrance through a garage or mudroom where wet footprints won’t matter as much and you can wipe down your dog before he heads to the rest of the house.

BEST: This is one of the latest design trends in luxury homes but you could do it in any home with space in the mudroom. Invest in a doggie shower with running water and a hand-held shower wand. I wish we had the space!

Last, but not least, provide your dog with a comfy cozy and WASHABLE dog bed so he won’t be tempted to get up on the couch - unless you want him to, that is.

BIKE TOURI N A U S T R I A

The kids have grown up and moved away and my husband and I are

looking at each other wondering – what now? The opportunity to travel

and bike through Austria with our best friends and their daughter sounded

wonderful. I know of several people that have experienced biking through

Europe so we thought we would give it a try.

“WE BIKED THROUGH VALLEYS AND AROUND EVERY BEND WAS ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN...

We booked an unguided tour through Bike Tour Direct. The company

supplied the bikes, arranged the hotels, our breakfasts and dinners

for 7 days and provided a map book and instructions of where to bike.

Each morning we would have our luggage in the hotel lobby by 9:00

am and they would be picked up and transported to our next hotel

for our arrival that evening. The bikes we used were high quality, fit

to measure, and the company rep would adjust them for each person

so that we were comfortable. Once we were fitted, we packed up our

saddlebags, put on our helmets and off we went to our own devices.

We started in Innsbruck, 240 some odd kilometers away was Salzburg,

our final destination. We biked through some of the most beautiful

countryside I have ever seen. We biked through the valleys and around

every bend was another beautiful mountain, another field of cows,

another lovely village with a beer garden, and houses with window

boxes full of flowers. Spectacular!

S ummer vacation for my family usually meant camping, kayaking, hiking in this great country of Canada, while making use of our amazing Provincial Parks and visiting the small towns of Ontario. This year was different.

“THE KIDS HAVE GROWN UP AND MOVED AWAY AND MY HUSBAND AND I ARE LOOKING AT EACH OTHER WONDERING -WHAT NOW?

As this was an unguided tour, I was concerned that we would get lost

or if it would be safe and secure along this journey. I can honestly say

that we never felt unsafe during this entire trip. We did manage to get

lost once or twice, but we always managed to find our way back and it

never added a lot of time to our bike tour agenda. Over the course of

the week we biked about 45 -50 kilometers a day with a rest day in the

middle of the week. During this rest day we could wander around and

see the sites and enjoy the food and culture.

Being off the beaten path; having our own agenda; having to arrive at our

destination point before the supper hour ended, gave us a real chance

to explore the country side, talk to the locals and really experience

Austria. Half way through the trip we were at an outdoor bier garden

enjoying our lunch when I looked over at my husband and I thought he

looks 10 years younger.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and we were all sad to

give up our bikes when we got to Salzburg but the memories live on,

and this special experience we had with our best friends will always

be cherished.

Jenny is a 1 ½ year old AussieDoodle (Australian

Shepard and Poodle). She is extremely affectionate

and very attached to her mommy. Although we crate

trained her, her favourite place to sleep is in my bed!

She loves to go for “walkies” and loves to run with the

other dogs at the doggy park. She also loves to play

with our cats - Although they do not feel the same.

She is actually afraid of one of them! Loves stuffed

toys but they don’t last long around her. She could

not be more loved!

RIVERWOOD

DOG FESTOwners and their pooches gathered at the 2nd Annual Dog Fest for a day filled with fun and activities for their pets at Mississauga’s scenic Riverwood Park.

Waste, recycling and Organics carts will be delivered to Peel residents’ homes from September to December. Residents are reminded to store the new carts and continue using their current bins until the new collection program starts inJanuary, 2016.

The delivery of new garbage, recycling and organics carts in Peel has started. The carts are part of Peel Region’s new waste collec-tion program that begins in January 2016. Deliveries started in Brampton, and will make their way to Mississauga in late October through to early December. By the end of the delivery program, which is one of the largest, most complex cart rollouts ever implemented in North America, close to 1 million carts will be delivered to Peel residents.

“Ensuring every home in Peel Region receives the correct carts on time is a detailed and time consuming process and we’d like to thank everyone in advance for their patience,” said Peel Region Waste Management Director Norman Lee.

Residents should continue using their existing garbage bins and recycling boxes until the end of the year. Carts put out before January 2016 will not be collected.

“The new carts will be emptied by an automated truck, making collection

Get Ready PeelNew waste collection carts coming your way

quicker, safer and more efficient,”says Lee.

An owner’s manual is included with the carts that describes their proper use and provides an overview of the new collec-tion program. Residents can go online to learn more about the upcoming changes, including collection schedules and tips for storing the carts.

“We think residents are going to like their new carts,” says Lee. “They have wheels to make it easier to get waste to the curb and they also have lids to prevent windblown litter. The organics cart has a special lock to keep raccoons and pests out.”

Lee says Peel’s new waste collection and recycling program will save money, improve the efficiency of waste collection and is better for the environment.

Residents are encouraged to visitpeelregion.ca/waste for more information.

GORDON GRAYDON MEMORIAL SECONDARY SCHOOL

Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School is back to life with students, staff, parents/guardians and members of the community working with each other to ensure each student’s school experience is enjoyable, interactive, safe and full of 21st century teaching/learning applications.

Classes began, for 720 students, September 8th. Excitement, at the start of a new school year, could be seen and heard throughout the building. Our Grade 9 students, with the incredible organization of our Student Athletic Association, participated in a “Welcome to Graydon” barbeque and mini-Olympics. With the weather co-operating, students (and staff/student leaders) competed in various low-organized games. The school’s mascot (The Graydon Hawk) encouraged participants to show true school spirit and enthusiasm.

Throughout the remaining month of September, students have been busy enjoying all that Graydon has to offer…the numerous club activities, sports team tryouts and academic pursuits. Throughout the fall, over half of Graydon’s student population will be involved in a number of activities/events that develop their leadership, social and academic skills. The Robotics Team, DECA, Mock Trials Team, Student Activities Council, Student Athletic Association, The International Business and Technology Association, Graphic Design Management Team and a number of sports teams have been actively planning events and competitions at the local, provincial, national and international levels.

The first meeting of the School Council was held Thursday, September 24th, at 7:15 pm in the school’s library. The new executive was elected. The School Council also discussed possible fund raising initiatives and reflected on the amazing first month of school. Parents noted that Graydon is providing their children with one of the best experiences academically and in extra-curricular options. The council is always looking for additional parents/guardians to join the meetings. The next one is scheduled for Thursday, November 26th, at 7:15 pm, in the school’s library.

The weather is a mirror of our start up at PCSS for 2015-2016, nothing but sunshine. The staff and students have hit the ground running, we are very excited for a great year. Friday September 18th was our 3rd annual Grade 9 overnight camp trip to Y.M.C.A. Camp Pine Crest Outdoor Education Centre near Muskoka. It was a great opportunity for our grade 9’s to connect with each other, staff, and nature, all at once.

September our focus was on anti-bullying awareness educa-tion through our D.A.R.E program. We have been running this program for the past 10 years promoting Dignity And Respect Everywhere. We do this by team building programs with emphasis on respect, conflict resolution and communication skills with the aim to foster positive relationships with their fellow peers, senior peer mentors and home form teachers.

CLARKSON SECONDARY SCHOOL

The school year is in full swing now and we’ve had a tremendous start to the new school year here at Clarkson S.S. As a school that values inclusion we do our best to help students feel welcomed.

Clarkson is also one of the Peel Schools for International Students and we opened our doors to 120 international students this year. To help with this transition, staff, students and members of the community created our World of Welcome to help orient our newcomers. The WOW program provided these students with a chance to tour the school, partner with a peer mentor and take part in a mock schedule prior to school starting. Our international students and families were genuinely appreciative of this opportunity and they felt more secure starting the new school year.

Continuing along that vein we held our annual PALS Breakfast for all grade 9’s and those new to the school. During the Breakfast students are provided with the opportunity to have a breakfast and visit with members of our various clubs and teams. This event helps to bring a greater awareness of all that goes on here at Clarkson and invariably has some component to it that appeals to everyone.

Our WOW program along with our PALS Breakfast are just two examples of how Clarkson looks to ease the transitions of students. Our ultimate goal is to have our students feel safe and comfortable enough to get involved and connected to school. With this connection we find that students are often a lot more successful in and out of the classroom. We are looking forward to great accomplishments from this year’s new international students and our Grade 9’s, the Class of 2019.
