The Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of Lewis and Clark Community College, District

No. 536, was called to order at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 13, 2012, in the Board Room of

Erickson Hall, Lewis and Clark Community College, Godfrey, Illinois, by Chairman Robert L.

Watson.

PUBLIC COMMENT

Chair Watson asked if there were any comments from the public. There were no comments.

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS

Vice President Kent Scheffel introduced Greg Wachalski and Ryan Jensen with Brailsford and

Dunlavey, the consulting firm hired to complete a student housing feasibility study for Lewis and

Clark. Scheffel said the study began in December and that more than 800 students were

surveyed throughout the process. The consultants presented to the board the complete findings

of the study, which indicate that the project size would need to be a design for approximately 160

students. The study revealed that there is a clear, present and serious need for housing close to

the campus. The next steps include finalizing the size of the project, creating a project

development schedule, presenting the findings to the Foundation board in April, and identifying

partners from the private sector who could complete the plans.

DISCUSSION ITEMS

Vice President Gary Ayres presented an updated Construction Projects Status Report. He

reported that work is 100 percent complete on the interiors of Wade and Fobes Hall walkways.

Finishing details will be completed with our own maintenance department in an effort to save

money. Sandblasting of the chapel is complete and the primer coat has already been applied.

Great weather has kept the projects on schedule. Vice President Ayres noted that cable has been

run for the campus directional signs. Construction for all signs will be completed simultaneously

as various trades are involved.

Vice President Lori Artis discussed the large crowds of campus visitors who continue to utilize

the newly renovated Hatheway Cultural Center and the numerous events taking place in the

theatre and gallery. Five major events have been held in the theatre since the building officially

opened in September drawing sold out crowds to each event. We are pleased to see the large

number of people engaging with the college through events in this facility.

Director of Sustainability Marcia Lochmann introduced Environmental Educator Natalie Marioni

and Angie Smith, an educator with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to discuss the joint effort

to develop and deliver river education with youth throughout the country. The U.S. Army Corps

of Engineers developed the Our Mississippi curriculum. The curriculum will be delivered to

teachers in our region throughout the summer. This activity guide meets national learning

standards as well as Illinois Learning Standards and is geared to fifth and sixth grades with

extensions through high school. NGRREC developed a new framework for bringing river

education into the classroom and bringing students to the river in different locations up and down

the Mississippi River basin from the headwaters to the gulf. MRX or Mississippi River Xchange

allows students to use technology to exchange information about their piece of the watershed

with classes and students along the Mississippi River.

The partnership between the Corps and NGRREC provides opportunities to share information

and advance river education without duplicated effort.

Chief Information Officer Mark Tuck discussed the college’s next five-year technology plan to

go through 2017. In 1995, the college boasted 80 computers on campus; today, more than 2700

computers are utilized by the college at multiple campus sites. The plan encompasses a number

of goals including: Aligning career program technology with industry standards; ensuring

infrastructure can support leading edge technology; ensuring classroom and online instructional

technologies are current; maintaining and expanding sophistication of administrative systems;

research, analysis and reporting; developing media technology; and training and skills

development.
