Maryisaremarkablepublicspeaker,outstandingstudent,andinspiringmentortofellowstudents.Shewill representTennesseewellinher nationalleadershiprole.
Partnership Between ChSCC and WACKER Polysilicon North America
TheWACKERinstituteatChattanoogaState(ChSCC)isauniquepartnershipbetweenChSCCandWACKERPolysiliconNorthAmerica(WPNA).WACKERisbuildinga$1.8Billionplantintheareatomanufacturehyper-purePolysiliconfortheemerging photovoltaicindustry.Tooperatetheplant,WACKERrequiresahighlypreparedworkforce.Respondingtothisneed,ChSCCbenchmarkedtrainingobjectivesagainsttheWACKER’strainingaffiliateinGermany.Theresults--anewdegreeprogram wasdevelopedinChemicalEngineering Technologywith embeddedcertificatesinProcessTechnologyandAdvancedProcessTechnology;and100%oftheprogram’s graduateshavebeenhiredbyWacker.
Thisuniqueprogramof43semesterhourscompletedinsixmonthsfocusesonactivelearningwherestudentsapplytheoryinthereal-worldsettingoftheChattanoogaStatePilotPlant,andthenreflectonwhattheyhavelearnedinteams.
Seventy-fiveninthgradersarrivedon theChattanoogaStatecampusatthenewHamiltonCountySTEMHighSchool. Thisplatformschool,whichwillgrowto300studentsby2015,isanincubator forbestpracticesinscience,technology,engineering,andmathematics education.Studentsareengagedinproblem-basedlearninginareal-worldenvironment.AllstudentsuseaniPadandtheSTEMhighschoolishoused nexttotheWackerInstitute,soonthe engineeringtechnologydivision,formaximumexposuretotechnology.

Cleveland State Wins NatureHillsNursery’s Green America AwardClevelandStatewasrecentlyawardedsecondplaceinNatureHillsNursery’sGreenAmericaAwardsforplanstobuildabook-themedliteracygardenatTaylorElementarySchool(TES)andofferCSCCstudentstheopportunitytoreadstoriestotheelementarystudentsinthegardensetting.TESisaruralelementaryschoolinBradleyCounty,Tennessee,where 78%ofstudentsareclassifiedaslowincome.Nationalstudiesshowadirectcorrelationbetweenincomeandliteracy.
CSCCStudentAthletesRecognizedwith DistinguishedAcademicAll-AmericanAward
TheNationalJuniorCollege AthleticAssociation(NJCAA) recentlyrecognizedCleveland StateCommunityCollegestudentsColinSullivanandCaseyGriffin withtheDistinguishedAcademicAll-Americanduringthe2012-2013academicyear.
Toqualifyforthisachievement,eachathletemustcomplete threefull-timesemestersandaminimumof45semestercredithoursofcollegework,must participateatthevarsitylevel, andmusthaveanaccumulated GPAof3.6orbetterona4.0scale.
Sullivan,amemberoftheCSCCBaseballteamfromLaVergne,TN,receivedtheNJCAAAwardfor SuperiorAcademicAchievement. Sullivanhasmaintaineda3.82GPA.Griffin,amemberoftheCSCC SoftballTeamfromTunnelHill,GA,receivedtheNJCAAAwardforExemplaryAcademicAchievement.Griffinhasmaintaineda3.76GPA.
CSCC Awarded Perkins IV Grant
ClevelandState’sAnatomyandPhysiologycoursesmay lookabitdifferentthisfallthankstosomefundinglinked totheCollege’sPerkinsGrant.Inanefforttoincrease studentengagement,CSCCwasabletopurchaseseveralinteractiveitemsforlectureandlab,includingnew muscularandligamentousskeletons(showninpicture)in anattempttointegratethesethreebodysystems,wet spirometerstoallowstudentstheopportunitytomeasuretheirownlungcapacities,andneweyemodels.Inan attempttovaryteachingmethodologies,thesemodelsallowvisual-orientedandkinesthetic-orientedstudentsadvantagesintheclassroomwhileprovidingaintegrativeapproachtoteachingthesetwosystems.System integration,orstudyingthehumanbodyasonesystem,helpstrainstudentstothinkcriticallyastheyassesstheoverallhealthofanindividual.

EricCreelwasthefirstofhisfamilytoattendcollege–toevenwanttoattendcollege.Butduringhisfreshmanyear,hisbrotherdied.Eric’sgriefwascompoundedbyfinancial realitiesashisworking-classfamilystruggledtopaymedicalbills.Ericfoundhimselfworkingfulltimeatarestaurant.Classestookabackseatandgradesnosedivedintofailures.
Ericreadilyadmitsheisn’tsurewhatmadehimwanttocontinue,butoverthecourseofthenext5years,heworkedtowardrepairinghisgradesinordertofinishadegree.
Lastyear,Ericfoundhispassion. Ineligibleforworkstudy,hevolunteeredintheMarketingOfficethinkinghewouldliketodosomethingtosupporttheathleticprogram.Therehelearnedtoshootgames,draftnews,uploadscores,createdigitalsignage,createadvertising,brochuresandflyers,shootcommercials,anduploadwebcontent.

ColumbiaStateCommunityCollege’sFilmCrewTechnologystudentsswepttheawardceremonywiththreeawardsfortheirsubmissionintheNashville48-HourFilmProject.Competingagainstteamsfromalloverthemid-state,thecollege’steamtook“BestSilentFilm”and“BestCinematographyOverall,”andintheir division,theteamwasawarded“BestFilm.”
TheNashville48-HourFilmProjectgivesteams48consecutivehourstowrite,script,cast,shootandeditamovie.Theteamsaregivenrandomelementswhichmustbeincorporatedintothefinishedvideo.

JoshCavinessofNewbernbeganhispost-secondaryeducationatDyersburgState.WhileatDSCC,heservedasStudentGovernmentAssociationpresident.HereceivedfivedifferentrecognitionsatHonorsConvocationandwasoneofthreeintheDSCCclassof2009toearnaperfect4.0gradepointaverage(GPA).
Caviness’nextstopwasVanderbilt Universitywherehecompletedhis BachelorofArtsinHistoryandgraduatedin2011summacumlaude,againwithaperfect4.0GPA.Thisfall,Cavinessbeganhismaster’sworkinHistoryatthe UniversityofMemphis.
Sinceitsinceptionin1982,the DyersburgStateCommunityCollegenursingprogramhasheldclosetiestothehospitallocatedonlytwoblocksfromitscampusinDyersburg.In2011-12, DyersburgRegionalMedicalCenter(DMRC)servedastheclinicalsitefor 137nursingstudents.Presently,over 130DSCCnursingalumniworkat thehospital.
“WeareveryproudoftherelationshipwehavedevelopedwithDyersburg StateCommunityCollege.Ourclinical

Motlow/Bridgestone PartnershipBenefits IndustryandEmployeesMotlowCollegeMechatronicsclassesareunderwayforthefirsttimethisfallatBridgestone’sLavergneplantasaresultofapartnershipformedbetweenthecollegeandindustrytoprovideBridgestonewithmorehighlyqualifiedworkers,andtoofferemployeesthetrainingtheyneedtobecomemore valuedmembersoftheworkforce.
StudentsintheMechatronicsProgramlearnthroughclassroomstudyandan automatedassemblylinesystems approachthatistailoredtotoday’s industrialrequirements.Mechatronicsisanengineeringsciencethatintegratesmechanical,electronic,anddata processingcomponents.Workerswithknowledgeoftheseprocessesarehighlysoughtafterintheautomotive,defense,consumerproductmanufacturing,aerospace,renewableenergy,andotherindustries.MotlowCollegeisoneofonly14schoolsinthenationthatofferstheSiemensMechatronicSystems CertificationProgram.

Inadditiontocompletingprojectsandexperiments,STEMcampersaregivendigitalcamerasandaretaughthowtodownloadpicturesandcreatePowerPointpresentations.Butnomatterwhattheyaredoing,students“areinspiredtohaveideas,formhypothesis,createdrawingsandblueprintsandtesttheories,”saidBillyHix,amemberofMotlow’sfacultyandcampinstructor.
“SomeoftheactivitiesinourcamparemodeledaftertheworkthatIhavedonewiththeSpaceCampattheUSSpaceandRocketCenter,”Hixsaid.“However,thecostofspacecampisprohibitivetomanystudents.”

Forthefourthconsecutiveyear, Motlowgraduatedahigher percentageofsophomoreathletesthananyothercommunitycollegeinTennessee.Thisyear,32ofMotlow’s39sophomoreathletes(82percent)graduated,withmanyearning academichonors.Inaddition,fourwerenamedNationalJuniorCollegeAthleticAssociationExemplary AcademicAchievementHonorees.

OnThursday,August16,2012,thegrandopeningceremonywasheldforthenewClarksvillecampusofNashvilleStateCommunityCollege.ThiseventlaunchedtheFall2012semesterforthe campus,locatedat1760WilmaRudolphBlvd.Theceremonyincludedacampusdedication,ribboncutting,andcampustours.
“WithNashvilleStateCommunityCollegehavingapresencehere,wenowhavethreeBoardofRegentsschoolsrepresentedhereinMontgomeryCounty,andthat’sanoutstandingthing,”saidTennesseeSenatorTimBarnesinhisremarksatthededication.“Theseinstitutionsarenotincompetitionwitheachother. Theseinstitutionscomplimenteachother,andthatisagreat benefittothepeoplethatliveandworkinMontgomerycountyandsurroundingcounties.”

Nashville State Moves SoutheastCampusto New Facility
NashvilleStateofficiallyopenedthenewlocationofitsSoutheastcampuswithagrandopeningceremonyheldonWednesday,August22.MetroNashvilleDavidsonCountyMayorKarlDeanwasjoinedbyseveralcouncilmembers, Tennesseestatelegislators,andareabusinessownersforthecampus dedicationandribboncutting.
WendyTucker,MayorDean’sadvisor oneducation,stated“Wearepleasedwiththepartnershipwehavedevelopedwiththecollege.AstheMayorstatedduringtheceremony,thisnewcampusintheSoutheasternpartofDavidsonCountyperfectlycomplementsthe city’sowninvestments…AnexpandedNashvilleStatealsomeansmore studentswillhaveopportunitiestoearndegrees,andincreasingthenumberofcollegegraduatesinNashvilleis importanttome.”

Online Chemical Process Operation CurriculumReadyforLaunch
Astate-of-the-artonlinechemicalprocessoperationscurriculumhasbeendevelopedattheRegionalCenterforAdvancedManufacturing.WiththeavailabilityandassistanceofavastsupplyofsubjectmatterresourcesthroughEastmanChemicalCompanyandtheAdvancedManufacturingPartnership(AMP),thiscurriculumprovides10coursesinchemicalprocessoperations.Sometopicscoveredincludematerialshandling,processequipment,distillation,instrumentation,andtroubleshooting.Withtheincreaseddemandforflexiblecontentdelivery,andthecomplexitiesofrunningamodernchemical process,thenewchemicalprocessoperationscurriculumis meetingtheneedsofthe21stcenturyworkforce.Theworkwasfundedthrougha$15milliongrantfromtheDepartmentof EconomicandCommunityDevelopmentinapartnershipwith Eastman,NortheastState,andECDinresponsetoEastman’sProjectReinvest.Thecurriculumwillbelaunchedinthefall2012.

MatthewWaldrep,ahome-schoolstudentintheDual EnrollmentProgramatPellissippiState,hasbeenacceptedtotheUnitedStatesMilitaryAcademyatWestPoint,N.Y.TobeconsideredforadmissiontoWestPoint,candidatesmustmeetcertainacademic,medicalandphysicalrequirementsandmustreceiveanominationfromanapprovedsource.U.S.Rep.JohnDuncannominatedWaldrep.
The18-year-oldwasenrolledinPellissippiState’sdual enrollmentclassesforthepasttwoacademicyears,takingcoursesthatgavehimagoodfoundationinmathandscience.Heearned42collegecredithourswitha3.96GPA.
PellissippiStaterolledoutaninnovativeworkforce developmentprograminAugust,theresultofitsparticipationintheAutomotiveManufacturingTechnicalEducation Collaborative(AMTEC).
AMTEC,whichwasformedin2004,comprises21industrypartnersand23communitycolleges.AMTECwasawardeda$5.5millionNationalScienceFoundationgrantin2009toimprovethecompetitivenessoftheU.S.-basedautomotivemanufacturingsectorandtheautomotivesupplychain.
Thegeneralmaintenancemechatronicscurriculumcovers14coursesand59modules.FlexibleandresponsivetotheneedsofworkersandEastTennesseecompanies,coursescanbetakenonlinewhilehands-onskillsaredevelopedatPellissippiState’sengineeringtechnologylabs.
TheCollege’sBusinessandCommunityServicesandthe College’sMechanicalEngineeringTechnologyfaculty contributedtotheAMTECstudy.METfacultydevelopedabout10percentofthecurriculum.Thecurriculumarticulatesas45credithoursandworkersmayearnnationalcertification.

SouthwestTennesseeCommunity CollegewasthepresentingsponsoroftheMemphisGrizzliesPoetrySlam contest,where27highschoolstudentsfromacrosstheMid-Southpresentedtheirspokenwordlyricsinfrontofa paneloffivejudgesandanaudiencefilledwithsupportersjustbeforethe firstoftheyear.TacheleAndersonwasthefirstplacewinner,representingWhiteStationHighSchoolofMemphis.TheMemphisGrizzliesawardedherwithatriptoNewYorkCity.Inaddition,mostimportantly,SouthwestgaveTachele Andersonafullscholarshiptothe Collegewitha$100persemesterbookstipend.Herpoemwassimplycalled “IBelieveinMyself”─butwithatwist.Andersonsaid,“It’snotjustsimplysayingthatyoubelieveinyourself,youhavetoputsomeeffortintoit.”Shesaidthat gettingascholarshiptoSouthwestis“great,especiallysincemoneyisakey issueforcollege.”TheGrizzliesoftheNBAwillagainpartnerwithSouthwest in2012forthisannualcommunity serviceevent.

LoveCommunityServiceAwardby theTennesseeHigherEducation Commission.MichelreceivedhisVISAtostudyintheUnitedStatesonthemorningofTuesday,January12,2010.JustafewhourslaterhiscountryofHaitiwashitbyadevastating7.0magnitudeearthquake.Friendsandclassmatesperishedinthequake.Hissisterwasseverelyinjured.Hestayedathersidefordayswaitingformedicalhelp.MicheldidmanagetomakeittotheUnitedStatestoattendschoolatVolunteerStateCommunityCollege.Micheltookactionandenlistedhelpfromfriends,supportersandstudentsinTennessee.HeworkedwithFirstBaptistChurchofWhiteHouseandotherdonorsacrossthecountrytobuildaschoolinHaiti.
“IwentbacktoHaitiafterbeingintheUnitedStatesforawhileandIcouldn’tevensleep,”saidMichel.“Therewassomuchthatneededtobedone.”

ScienceDegreeProgramstartsthisfall.It’sdesignedtoprovidestudentswiththetrainingtheyneedtoquicklygetintothehealthcareworkplace.“Thereisaneedanddemandinthecommunityforthisskillset,”saidValerieBowling,VolStatedirectorofHealthInformationTechnology.“Themovetoelectronichealthrecordsincreasedthe
needforhealthcareprofessionalswithaninformationtechnologybackground.”TheVolStateprogramwillbetheonlycommunitycollegeprogramofitstypeinMiddleTennessee.
MeredithCromergraduatedinDecember,2011,fromWaltersState’sNursingProgram.Justtwosemesterslater–thisDecember–she’llgraduatewithaBSNfromEastTennesseeStateUniversity.Shewas abletodothisthroughadualadmissionsprogrambetweenthetwoschoolswhileraisingtwochildren.Stillinapilotstage,theprogram isalreadyamajorsuccessifmeasuredbystudentinterestandstudentsuccess.Studentsaddafewmorehoursandclinicalsectionsapplytobothprograms.ThroughETSUonlinecoursesandcoursestaughtat theWaltersStatecampus,manyneverhavetoleavetheircommunitytoearntwovaluablenursingcertifications.AsforMeredith,she’sonherwaytoearningherthird–amaster’sinnursingfromtheUniversityofTennessee.

Throughouttherecession,Walters Statehasservedmanynontraditionalstudentswhofoundthemselvesmid- careerwithnocareer.Many,like ThomasTalley,walkedintoworkonedayonlytolearnhehadnojob.Withafamilytosupportandacoupleofdecadesuntilretirement,TalleytalkedtoWaltersStatefacultymembersandWorkforceInvestmentAct(WIA)careerspecialists.Hedecidedhewasn’t goingtobeavictimoftherecession.
