MOTHER’S DAY BUFFET Our annual buffet to honor moms will take place on Sunday, May 12. Residents of 400 Hemenway are welcomed to invite guests (at the all-inclusive $20 rate) to share in this special day; please notify Brock Rafferty at your earliest opportunity, so that we may plan more efficiently for guests in Concord Dining Room.

Due to the enormous popularity of this event, guests must have a reservation. PLEASE make your reservation by May 5!

The Meadows: Broadmeadow Dining Room will be closed on Mother’s Day. We invite you to join us at Town Center; please notify Brock of your dining intentions by May 5.

FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR Residents Ray Galgano and Russ Lang became prisoners of war during WWII and will be recognized in a community reception at 2:00 PM on April 9, the national day of recognition for former POWs.

Private First Class Galgano had volunteered as a Ranger and well understood the hazards of the profession, although not quite 20 years old. He was captured on January 30, 1944 at Anzio beach-head in Italy after being shot in the chest. He was held in Germany for 15 months in three different camps and was finally freed by the Russians on April 22, 1945. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Sergeant Lang fought bravely at the Battle of the Bulge and was captured on December 19, 1944, near the St. Vith sector of the West Wall. He has written in his memoirs, “We were all hungry, and except for a couple of D-bars and K rations I had had nothing to eat since the attack started three days earlier. The Luftwaffe guards took us to a barbed wire enclosure and threw us turnips that were growing in a nearby field.” He would not be a free man again until April 7, 1945, four months after his capture.

Please join us in honoring and thanking them for their service.

A Turning Point in Senior Living

ARTISTS AMONG US Current resident treasures that can be viewed around the community in-clude numerous paintings and drawings by Bev-erly Rinck in Meadows 370, and an exhibit of early comic strip characters that was drawn by Charles Rogers displayed en route to the Gal-ley from the Chapel in 400 (near the new con-vent entrance). We are thrilled to be able to showcase the talents of our residents! It is said, musicians, writers, crafters, illustrators, and painters never truly retire, their creative juices just keep flowing. For other retirees, abilities in the arts are newly discovered. Whether profes-sional or amateur, if you have crafted a work that you would like to share with the community, please contact Diane Richmond, activities co-ordinator.

All in The Family

Soon after New Horizons opened its doors in 1994, one of the first residents to walk in was Helen Neville. Now, nearly 20 years later, her daughter, Jane Neville, is settling in to experience the comforts and conveniences of The Meadows. This singular choice for re-tirement residency truly runs in the fam-ily, as Jane’s aunt, Dorothy Halloran, and uncle-in-law, John Gracey, lived at New Horizons more than a decade ago. Jane is New Horizons’ second legacy resident. We are delighted that the next generation continues to declare,

“This is home!”

HEALTH & FITNESS NEWS If eggs at breakfast are one of your simple pleasures, eat up! According to Runner’s World, egg yolks are a leading source of lutein and zeaxanthin, a duo of antioxi-dants that accumulates in the retina, where they protect eye health. Researchers at Tufts University discovered that lutein is better absorbed from eggs than other sources, such as spinach. Yolks also pro-vide selenium, vitamin E, high-quality pro-tein, and choline, a nutrient that can help improve heart health.
