Agenda

Ethical Issues: Narrative Approaches toAssessment. Evaluating Problems, Not Persons Marc Charney, Ph.D., L.P.C., L.M.F.T.May 17 | 9:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. | Three hours of ethics continuing educationUniversity Village B, Conference Rooms CTuition $70 This workshop will explore the practices of assessment and evaluation throughthe lens of Narrative Therapy practices. Narrative Therapy is a respectful,collaborative and creative approach that views people as the experts on their ownlives, and that strives to assist people to re-author their preferred stories for theirlives. We will critique the traditional practices in the culture of psychotherapywhich entails the assessment, evaluation, and diagnosis of persons. Some of theplanned stops on this journey will be to examine 1) how persons are constructedin our culture, 2) how problems are constructed, 3) how Narrative practicesprovide a counter-cultural antidote to dividing (differentiating), objectification,and normalization, 4) what are the ethical implications of both methodologies?

Supervision Redux VIII: Narrative SupervisionPractices Review Marc Charney, Ph.D., L.P.C., L.M.F.T.May 17 | 1:30 - 4:45 p.m. | Three hours of supervision continuing educationUniversity Village B, Conference Rooms CTuition $70This workshop will review some of the central ideas and practices of NarrativeTherapy as applied to supervision. Practices related to professional identitydevelopment, ethics and consultation will be explored. Half of the workshop willbe set aside for discussing issues and questions that attendees bring with them.

About Our Presenter

Marc CharneyPh.D., L.P.C., L.M.F.T.

Dr. Charney has more than 30 years of experience as aclinician and 25 years as a professor and trainer. He is amember of the faculty of the Human RelationsDepartment, University of Oklahoma, and OklahomaCity University where he teaches family therapy andcounseling courses.

He is co-founder and director of Family and Children's Consultants, Inc. Heis an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and an Approved LPC/LMFTSupervisor in Oklahoma.

About Our Program Director

Monica VarnerPh.D., M.S., L.P.C.Program Director, Community Counseling Program CoordinatorAssociate Professor of Sociology and CounselingRogers State University

Dr. Varner is in her tenth year as an associate professorat Rogers State University. She is the CommunityCounseling Program Coordinator and teaches severalcounseling courses including MulticulturalCounseling, Intervention Strategies, and ChemicalAbuse of Special Populations. Dr. Varner also teachescourses in sociology and research. Dr. Varner has a

Ph.D. in Sociology with a specialization in Social Psychology and a master’sdegree in Community Counseling. She is a Licensed Professional Counselorand an LPC-approved supervisor. Dr. Varner has 25 years of counselingexperience. She has also served as a mental health program director forpsychiatric hospitals, schools, and churches in Oklahoma and the region, andwas co-owner of a counseling agency in Ada, Oklahoma.

Continuing Education HoursTo receive completion verification of CEU hours, participants will sign in atregistration, attend the full program, and complete a program evaluation. Forcontinuing education inquires, contact Dr. Monica Varner at [email protected].

Licensed Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, LicensedBehavioral Practitioners, and Licensed Genetic Counselors will earncontinuing education hours. All other licenses will need to contact theirlicensing board for approval. Please contact us if you need assistance.

Courses have has been approved for continuing education hours by theOklahoma State Department of Health, Professional Counselor Licensing.

If your profession is not listed, please contact your professional board todetermine how to receive continuing education credit.

RSU Community Counseling Program:B.S. Community CounselingThe Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Community Counseling at RSU is amultidisciplinary degree that provides students a strong educationalbackground in counseling, social and personal problems, psychology, andsociology.

The degree is designed to provide students the skills required for entry-levelpositions in a human service environment, addressing issues related tochildren and adolescents, families, public health, substance abuse, corrections,mental health, and others.

Graduates of this degree will be qualified to serve in several capacities athuman service agencies. The degree also serves as excellent preparation forgraduate school in Community Counseling, Psychology, or Sociology. Ourstudents are prepared for careers in which oral and written communication,analytical, best practices, and problem-solving skills are valued.

Our FacilitiesThe Department of Psychology, Sociology, and Criminal Justice at RSUmaintains several multimedia classrooms which allow students and faculty touse the latest computer technology and simulations, and provide access to theInternet. Our program features a behavioral science laboratory, providingstudents the opportunity to hone basic research and counseling skills in a livesupervision environment.
