NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW!

FALL 2009

Dear Neighbors,

With brightly colored leaves and chillier air comes the start of a new fall season—a time for fresh projects, exciting learning experiences, and the start of another school year. At the same time, it becomes more important than ever to strengthen bonds of community and friendship especially in the face of an economic climate that continues to be tough for all.

This fall at USES, we are happy to offer a new schedule of dynamic classes with the chance for those of all ages to learn something new and engage in our community. Come awaken your creative side through art and dance, add professional skills to your resume, or learn a new language—whether it be Spanish or HTML. As always, our youth programs continue to foster learning, growth, and fun in a warm neighborhood environment for children of all ages. We hope that the opportunities in this catalogue will enrich individual lives while helping to create ties that unite us as a community.

Please browse through this catalogue and join us in learning some-thing new, meeting your neighbors, and making new friends. I look forward to seeing you in class!

Mission and historyunited South End Settlements (uSES) is a catalyst, bringing together the resources of participants, the community and the agency to promote the stabilization and well-being of individuals and groups at risk within the community, nurture personal growth and development, build a sense of com-munity and foster an environment where all can thrive. Settlement houses were first established in this country in the late 1800s in poor urban neighborhoods to ameliorate the horrific living conditions that awaited the thousands of newcomers that were arriving. uSES was incorporated in its current form in 1960, following the merger of several of Boston’s first settlement houses: South End House, Hale House, lincoln House, the original Harriet Tubman House, and the Children’s Art Centre.
