The summer of 2017 was our busiest summer on record, with new connections to popular city and holiday destinations as well as 125,000 more people booked on flights compared to last year. This summer the airport has provided new connections to Budapest and Reus with Ryanair, Split and Almeria with Jet2.com, and Girona and Naples with both Ryanair and Jet2.com. There have also been a number of developments within our passenger terminal including a new Starbucks coffee shop within the departures lounge along with more seating in our most popular restaurants and bars. To keep up with this growth we have invested in new security lanes to help make sure that queues are kept to a minimum even during our busiest times. We have also employed more staff to provide customers with information and help as they pass through the airport. Our community relations teams have also been out and about this summer at a number of community outreach events in local villages, with stalls at local events such as the Castle Donington Medieval Market, Kegworth ‘One Weekend’, Diseworth Village Show, Melbourne Arts Festival Trail and the popular Elvaston Castle Woodland Festival. We welcome your thoughts and opinions so please get in touch via email at [email protected] or by phone on 01332 818414. WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN EDITION OF COMMUNITY FLYER 2017 Every year the airport makes an annual contribution of £50,000 to the EMA Community Fund and in the 14 years since our community fund was established we have awarded over £926,000 to over 1180 groups. Whilst there have been many noteworthy projects that have benefited, two local projects have caught our eye recently. We were delighted to be able to award Staunton Harold Sailing Club £1,000 towards the cost of equipment which will help them to develop and facilitate a sailing programme for disabled people. The club has invited the Community Fund committee to look at the project once complete, and we very much look forward to seeing the end result. Meanwhile back on dry land the Kegworth Plan Group were successful in their bid for funding and also received a £1,000 grant, which will help them in their efforts to redevelop the Side Leys recreation ground into a more inclusive, diverse and interactive space. The decision to re-develop the ground came after the Kegworth Plan Group asked for feedback from members of the local community about how the space could be better used. Suggestions came from a broad range of age groups and as a result the new space will include, among other things, a dog agility area, meeting areas, sensory gardens, recreation facilities for teenagers and improved paths and signage. Graham Dayman, a local resident leading the project, has promised to keep us up to date on developments, and we can’t wait to see how it will take shape. If you are interested in getting involved with the project, the team are always looking for a willing pair of hands. Please contact Vicky Roe, Clerk for Kegworth Parish Council on (01509) 670204. If you are a local community group with a project that will bring lasting benefit to your community and would like to apply for an EMA Community Fund grant then please email us at [email protected] or visit our web site for more information. WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN EDITION OF COMMUNITY FLYER 2017

Every year the airport makes an annual contribution of £50,000 to the EMA Community Fund and in the 14 years since our community fund was established we have awarded over £926,000 to over 1180 groups.

GOTHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL Last year we piloted an art project with a group of Year 5 pupils from Kegworth Primary school to create a display of mosaic tiles which are now on display within our Pier. The children came into our Aerozone to work on their ideas with a theme of ‘The Airport through the Ages’ and local artist Victoria Brown was on hand to inspire the children. A colleague from the airport who works in Passenger Services framed the tiles for us and the finished result is brilliant.

We were so pleased with the pilot that we arranged to work with Gotham Primary School on something similar. Airport colleagues went into the school during July to help children across the whole school develop their artwork, and the event was showcased on BBC East Midlands Today. The artwork will shortly be professionally framed and displayed in the Pier, alongside Kegworth Primary pupils’ work.

We are now working with Melbourne Junior School, and aspire to work with primary schools in Castle Donington and Diseworth to further develop this fantastic project.

There is plenty of evidence that workplace volunteering is good for employees and good for business, helping people to grow in confidence and develop new skills.

The outcomes of workplace volunteering are wide ranging and always rewarding. It may be a practical project where you can see the fruits of your volunteering time in a newly painted fence or a newly landscaped garden or cleared pathway. Or it could be a one-to-one coaching or mentoring opportunity, which not only helps employees gain new skills but helps change the lives of the people they are working with in a real and lasting way.

At EMA we encourage and support our colleagues to get involved in volunteering both in our local community and also within our on-site Education Centre – the Aerozone. We allow our colleagues to take up to two working days each year to volunteer and last year 119 colleagues gave up their own time to volunteer. That’s over 24% of our work force – giving 876 hours of their time in a huge variety of ways, including reading in schools, mentoring young people, supporting work experience and talking to local young people in the Aerozone.

This July the EMA Commercial team were out in the Nottingham community. They spent time working in Maggie’s Centres assisting with gardening activities, and lending a hand in two different Scout’s charity shops in Nottingham. The team enjoyed spending time together doing something a bit different whilst learning more about what the charities offer and how they work.

The second East Midlands Airport Charity Golf Day was held on 27th June 2017 at Morley Hayes Golf Club, with 84 participants taking part and raising funds for the airport’s corporate charity, CLIC Sargent. The rain just about held off as the golfers set off on their 18 holes with some fantastic drives and putting witnessed throughout the day.

Golfers of all abilities were playing, some of whom had never played golf before; however everyone enjoyed themselves. £2,100 was raised throughout the course of the day, with a raffle and a silent auction raising a significant amount. All participants were treated to sweet treats courtesy of Thorntons, and local company Nelson’s Gin were on hand to offer a little tipple halfway round the course. The day was finished off with dinner in the club house and a very humbling speech from Andy Cliffe.
