news HEALTH PROMOTION
MAY IS BOWELSCAN MONTH…. Bowel cancer is diagnosed in more than 3,400 Victorians and over 12,500 Australians every year. In the early stages, bowel cancer often causes no symptoms. People at relatively high risk of bowel cancer can arrange with their doctor to have regular tests to check that everything is OK. Symptoms The most common symptoms of bowel cancer are: - Blood or mucus in the faeces. - An unexpected change in bowel habit. (for example, diarrhoea or constipation for no obvious reason) - General discomfort in the abdomen. (feelings of bloating, fullness and/or cramps) - Constant tiredness. - Weakness and paleness. Risk factors The causes of bowel cancer are not clearly understood. However, we know that some risk factors make it more likely that a person will develop bowel cancer. These include: - Getting older - bowel cancer more commonly affects people over the age of 50. - Strong family history of bowel cancer. - Having ulcerative colitis (inflamed colon lining) for more than eight to 10 years. Screening for bowel cancer Screening may assist in finding cancer or colorectal polyps (which can become cancerous) as early as possible. The earlier a cancer is found, the easier it is to treat and the more likely it will be curable. Bowel cancer is highly (90%) curable if found at an early stage. The screening test that is used is called the faecal occult blood test (FOBT). This is a simple test for the early signs of bowel cancer. It involves taking tiny samples from two or three bowel motions using a test kit. The samples are collected at home and then sent to a laboratory for testing. Screening kits will be available for purchase early in May from the Balmoral Bush Nursing Centre. To find out more about bowel screening, contact Balmoral Bush Nursing Centre 55701304.

To start the month we spent the day in the Centre and watched a Movie called “The
Queen” . When the news of the death of Princess Diana breaks upon a shocked British
public, Queen Elizabeth ll (Helen Mirren) retreats behind the walls of Balmoral Castle
with her family, unable to comprehend the public response to the tragedy. As the
unprecedented outpouring of emotion grows stronger, the British Prime Minster and
the Queen find themselves at odds in the wake of national mourning. Taught and
revealing, The Queen is an intimate portrait of a leader and nation in turmoil.
After watching the Movie we had lots of discussions on where we were and what we
were doing when the news of Diana’s death was announced in Australia.
Craft and what we will be doing next, this month, we knitted jumpers for little
Penguin’s. These jumpers play an important role in saving little penguins affected by oil
spills. Knitted jumpers are placed on oiled penguins to keep them warm and prevent
them from preening and swallowing toxic oil. A patch of oil the size of an adult
thumbnail can kill a little penguin.
Men’s Shed have been working with the Grade 6 students, RSL & Historical Society to
make and paint white crosses to represent the men and women that severed in World
War 1 from the Balmoral & District area. A lot of work went into researching names of
all the people that served, the students have been studying and finding out more
detail about individual people and events from World War 1. The crosses
were displayed at the ANZAC Service in Balmoral.

LIVE ACTIVE
news
Well our 2013/14 swimming program has again come to a close
with a wonderfully successful few weeks had by all. The splashing,
laughing and the saying “Not this one again” were still features of
the program with up to 15 people participating in the aquatic
exercise classes. The fun never stopped with many different new
exercises trialled which brought lots of challenges and half near
drowning’s (only kidding).
Braving the elements was never an issue as the dedicated team of
swimmers, week after week never opposed the idea of getting in
and having a swim. The eskimo laden trainer still bellowed from the
pool deck, directing, screeching but mostly laughing at the many
antics the synchronised swimmers achieved or accidently accomplished which bought many entertaining moments!
So with many glum faces our fun has stopped but look forward to our next instalment of not just water exercise but as we see it……
“An hour of fun in the company of good friends with a splash of exercise thrown in!”.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Balmoral and District Pool Committee for allowing us to use this wonderful facility enabling
us to have such a well patronised program up and running in our small community.
A final thank you must go to all the ladies who came along making this year our most
successful program ever!!!! Thank you for the laughter, crying, and the memorable
moments as our classes bought so much happiness and fun to my week!

news EARLY LEARNING CENTRE
This month at the Balmoral Early Learning Centre....
As part of our curriculum, we make a portfolio for each child. The portfolio shows the children’s learning and development throughout the year with photos, artwork, learning stories and much more. This year I have invited the families of the children to decorate these with their child. Carrie was lucky to have her mum and sister come in to help her decorate hers this week.
Principal 2:Partnerships-Create a welcoming environment where all children and families are respected and actively encouraged to collaborate with educators.
We have had a water tub out with ice and sea creatures. The 1-2 years olds have used this experience a little but have really taken an interest in the taps in the bathroom. We think it’s the running water that intrigues them.
Jann was slowly pouring the water into the tub the other day and these children stood there the whole time touching the running water. To extend their interest in running water I have set up a play experience with a little water feature. So far, the children love it! Learning; Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.
Over the years, we have had many children coming into the centre with strong interests reflected by their culture. We try to base most of our experiences around the interests of the children; and as many children are from a farming background, we are reflecting on what resources we could use to support this better. After some discussion we have decided to go on the lookout for small metal farm machinery toys. It was suggested that I ask the community to see if anyone has some farm machinery toys and has no further use for them. If you do have some and you would like to donate them, we would be very grateful. Identity: Develop strong foundations in both the culture and language of their families and of the broader community without compromising their cultural identities. If you are interested in booking your child into care please give me
a call on 0448 980 027 for more information.
