Section1:Overview
TheCommunityAppliedPracticeExperience(CAPE)isarequiredcomponentofaMasterof
PublicHealth(MPH)program.TheCouncilonEducationforPublicHealth(CEPH)requiresthat
“all graduate professional public health degree students develop skills in basic public health
concepts and demonstrate the application of these concepts through a practice experience
that is relevant to student’s areasof specialization.” For theCAPE, youwill synthesizewhat
you have learned (e.g. coursework) across the curriculum and put your acquired skills into
practicebydoingthefollowing:
1. Completeapproximately80-100hoursof fieldworkwithanestablishedpublichealth
agency, organization, or company to develop, implement, or evaluate an innovative
publichealthprojectthatproactivelyaddressesasocialjustice/healthequityissue;
2. Demonstrate attainment of at least three foundational and two concentration
competenciesviaafinalpresentation,writtenreport,ande-portfolio;
3. Beevaluatedbyyourfieldsitesupervisorandfacultyadvisor
I.Deliverables
Forms:PriortobeginningtheCAPE,youwillworkwithyourfacultyadvisortocompletetwo
forms: (1)PlanningFormand(2)ScopeofWorkForm.DuringyourCAPE,youwillcomplete
theMidtermProgressReportForm.At the completionof yourCAPE, youwill complete the
StudentEvaluationForm,andyourfieldsitesupervisorwillcompletetheFieldSiteSupervisor
EvaluationForm.Formscanbelocatedattheendofthisdocument.
Assignments:WhentheCAPEiscomplete,youwilldevelop,organize,andsubmit:(1)afinal
presentation;(2)awrittenreport;and(3)ane-portfolio.

II.Prerequisites
Prior to beginning the CAPE, you will have taken 3 of 5 School of Public Health & Health
Sciencescorecourses:

III.CreditHours
YourCAPEandIntegrativeLearningExperiencewillbesupportedbyatwo-semestersequence
course (HPP698 and HPP696). During your second year, you will attend one session every
otherweek,foratotalofsevensessionsinthefallsemesterandsevensessionsinthespring
semester.
IV.IndividualMeetingswithFacultyAdvisor
You will meet with your faculty advisor: to discuss planning, field site selection, and field
supervisor selection; to discuss/develop competency-based goals and objectives; to discuss
progress;andtodevelopyourdeliverables.Youwillsubmitallformsanddeliverablestoyour
facultyadvisor.
V.Grading
The CAPE is graded as satisfactory/unsatisfactory. In order to pass the CAPE, you must

completeall13steps,whicharedescribedinsection3.
VI.TheIntegrativeLearningExperience
TheIntegrativeLearningExperience(ILE)isawrittenrequirementthatdemonstratessynthesis
offoundationalandconcentrationcompetencies.Youareexpectedtoproduceahighquality
writtenreport(equivalenttoathesis),suchas:programandevaluationplans;researchpaper;
publishablemanuscript;healthcommunicationcampaign;etc.Duringthefallsemesterofyour
secondyear,youwillidentifyatopic,identifyacommittee,anddevelopanoutlineforyourILE.

AllMPHCommunityHealthEducation(CHE)studentsarerequiredtoattendtheCommunity
AppliedPractice Experience (CAPE) orientation session. The orientation sessionwill be held
during the fall semesterofyour firstyear.At theorientationsession,wewilldiscuss: (1) the
overall goals andobjectives of theCAPE; (2) deliverables; (3) guidelines andprocedures; (4)
forms;and(5)possiblefieldsiteplacements.

Step3:CompletethePlanningForm
The purpose of the Planning Form is to get you to start thinking specifically about your
academicorprofessionalinterestsandgoals,possiblefieldsites,andpreviousexperience(s)on
whichyoucanbuild.AsyoubeginplanningforyourCAPE,herearesomethingstoconsider:
(1) Whatareyouracademicorprofessional interests?Forexample:continuetoaPhDor

DrPHprogram;projectcoordinator;programplanningandevaluationspecialist;health
educationspecialist;dataorpolicyanalyst,etc.WhattypeofCAPEmightsupportyour
reachingthisgoal?
(2) What are the specific content areas onwhich youwould like to focus? For example:
infectious disease; maternal and child health; reproductive health or reproductive
justice;substanceuse;healthliteracy;foodjustice;etc.
(3) Identify the type of public health agency, organization, or company where you can
focus on your areas of interest, for example hospitals, public health departments,
researchgroups,non-profitorganizations,stateorfederalagencies,etc.
(4) Identify potential public health sites that align with your academic or professional
interests, and specific contentareasyouwant to furtherexplore.Forexample, if you
areinterestedinbecomingaprogramplanningandevaluationspecialistworkinginthe
fieldofreproductivehealth,identifypublichealthagenciesororganizationswherethis
typeofworkisbeingconducted.Agreatplacetostartislocaljobpostings,whichcan
help you identify public health agencies and organizations in the area. Many public
healthagencies andorganizationspost volunteeror internshipopportunitieson their
websites.
(5) Identify your previous work-related experiences or acquired skills, specifically those
related to public health. For example, volunteering as a health educatorwith a non-
profitorganizationoremploymentwithapublichealthdepartment.Youalsowantto
indicate your experiences (if applicable) with curriculum development, program
planning, program evaluation, interviewing, data collection or abstraction, data
analysisormanagement,andcomputersoftwareknowledge(e.g.ATLAS.TI,SPSS,or
R).HINT:Nowisagoodtimetobeginworkingonyourcoverletterandrésumé.
Step4:ReviewthePlanningFormwithyourfacultyadvisor
Schedule an appointment andmeetwith your faculty advisor to discuss thePlanningForm.
Yourfacultyadvisorwillprovideguidanceandassistyouasyouaremakingadecisionabout

wheretoconductyourCAPEandpotentialCAPEprojects.
Step5:Identifyyourfieldsiteandmeetwithyourfieldsitesupervisor
AftercompletingandreviewingthePlanningForm,youwillidentifyafieldsiteandafieldsite
supervisor.Thefollowingaregeneralcriteriaforselectingafieldsite,fieldsitesupervisor,and
aCAPEproject.
FieldSiteSelection
Generalcriteriaforchoosingafieldsiteareasfollows:
• Thefieldsiteisanagency,organization,orcompanythatprovidesplanningorservices
relevanttopublichealth
• Thefieldsiteenablesyoutofurtherdevelopandapplyspecificskillsorcompetencies
learnedinyouracademicprogram
• The field site provides a site supervisor who is willing and able to spend regularly
scheduledtimewithyouandprovideguidance
• Thefieldsiteshouldaffordyouregularcontactwithpublichealthpractitioners
• The field site exhibits awillingness to provide support, ranging from aworkspace to
stipendorsalary(ifavailableandappropriate)
• Thefieldsiteisagoodmatchwithyouracademicorprofessionalinterests,orspecific
contentarea

Aftermeetingwithyourfieldsitesupervisor,youshouldhaveseveralpotentialprojectsfrom
whichtochoose.CompletetheScopeofWorkForm.Scheduleanappointmentandmeetwith
your faculty advisor, who will assist you with finalizing this form. Prior to this meeting,
familiarize yourselfwith the foundational competencies (AppendixC) and the concentration
competencies(AppendixD)andhavesomeideasofwhichcompetenciesyouwillachieve.
Step7:RegisterforHPP698
Onceyouhavetakenallprerequisites,completedthePlanningForm,identifiedafieldsite,met
with your field site supervisor, and completed theScope ofWork Form you can register for
HPP698.Youwillneedapprovalfromyourfacultyadvisortoregister.

Step8:BeginHPP698andyourfieldwork
Beginning in the fallof your secondyear, youwill attendHPP698class sessionseveryother
week.Overthecourseofthisclass,youwillbeguidedthroughyourdeliverables,includingthe
finalpresentation,writtenreport,ande-portfolio.YouwillalsobeginplanningyourIntegrative
LearningExperience.
Step9:CompleteandsubmittoyourfacultyadvisortheMid-TermProgressReportForm
It is not unexpected for changes tooccur that substantially alter yourCAPE.Events suchas
changes inorganizationalcommitment,delaysbyfieldsitestaff, lossofprogramfunding,or
any number of similar issues need to be reported and theMid-Term Progress Report Form
servesthisfunction,aswellasgivesyoutheopportunitytodescribehowyouareaddressing
these challenges and the impact(s) theymay have on the goals and projected outcomes of
yourCAPE.

Step10:CompletetheFieldSiteSupervisorEvaluationForm
Within two weeks of completing your CAPE, your field site supervisor will evaluate your
performanceandreturntheFieldSiteSupervisorFormtoyourfacultyadvisor.Youwillneedto
ensurethatthisiscompletedwithinthetwo-weektimeframe.
Step11:Finalpresentation
During the last week of fall classes, you will present your CAPE. You will be allocated
approximately12minutesforyourpresentation,withapproximately3minutesforquestions.
Examples of presentations include slideshows (e.g. PowerPoint or Keynote), posters,
community-based discussions, or interactive workshops. The audience will include CHE
faculty,MPHstudents,andyouarewelcometoinviteyoursitesupervisors.
Step12:SubmittheStudentEvaluationFormandyourwrittenreport
Youwill complete theStudentEvaluationForm,which includesawritten report.Thewritten
reportisa10-pagereflectionofyourfieldexperience.TheStudentEvaluationFormandwritten
reportareduetoyourfacultyadvisoronthelastdayoffallclasses.
Step13:SubmityourE-portfolio
You will create an e-portfolio, which will provide evidence of a successful CAPE. Your e-
portfoliowill include aminimumof twoproducts that demonstratemasteryof at least five
competencies: three foundational competencies and two concentration competencies. You
will collect and organize artifacts from your CAPE,whichwill vary according to the type of
CAPE,andmayinclude:
• Policybriefs
• Advocacyplans
• Campaignmaterials
• Lessonplansorcurricula
• Multimedia,suchasphotos,websites,orposters
• Healthcommunicationplansandoutreachmaterials
