We put a call out to the community that we were in desperate need of

wheelchairs for our customers and without hesitation, Mr. Harvey Najim

and the Orsinger Foundation answered our call for help by providing us

immediate funding that helped us purchase almost 300 wheelchairs for

distribution to our customers in need. Add to that our most successful

Toast of the Town gala ever, honoring Ms. Helen Eversberg and the

Warm Springs Foundation, and it almost can’t get any better. We also

had a lot of change beginning with the heavy-duty work on our capital

campaign that involved finalizing our schematic design of our new

facility, securing additional capital campaign funders, and purchasing

our newest HUBSCRUB machine thanks to Impact San Antonio. Whew!

I’m exhausted, but when we see the results of the services we were able

to offer our customers, it has all been more than worth it.

Thank you to all of our partners, donors, supporters, friends, staff,

volunteers, board members and customers for another successful year!

You rock!

FISCAL YEAR 2017-2018 HAS TO BE CALLED THE YEAR OF COMMUNITY GENEROSITY AT ITS BEST!”

Elizabeth is a little girl living with Rett Syndrome and has been through our program multiple times for the various pieces of medical equipment and assistive technology she needs as she ages. Through our partnership with the Harvey Najim Foundation, we have successfully provided Elizabeth with a professionally refurbished and sanitized gait trainer to assist in walking, and arm braces to help with her sporadic arm movements and hand chewing.

PLAIN AND SIMPLE, PROJECT MEND IS HELPING ME ACCOMPANY MY WIFE TO THE MALL — I WILL BE ABLE TO LEAVE THE HOUSE AND GET SOME SUN AT THE PARK WITHOUT FEELING TERRIBLY ILL DUE TO MY PULMONARY DISEASE AND I CAN GO PLACES FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME WITHOUT GETTING TOO TIRED.”

Juan is an older gentleman living with COPD who enjoys leading an active life with his wife. Prior to coming to Project MEND, Juan was using a rollator as a mobility aid and carrying his oxygen tank. He found that this was exhausting and was frustrated in his inability to enjoy the places and activities with his wife. Juan was referred to our program and received a professionally refurbished power chair that grants him the ability to rest when out with his wife and lowers the exertion on his lungs.

Mark is a US Marine Corps veteran living with back and spinal cord damage. To live safely and comfortably in his home, Mark needs a power chair. Unfortunately, his insurance claim for a power chair was denied. Through our partnership with the Texas Veterans Commission, we provided Mark a professionally refurbished, sanitized and modified power chair.

“I am so grateful for Project MEND and their assistance. It’s made a huge impact in my quality of life. I’m very blessed.”

Project MEND’s equipment will help me tremendously.

I am very blessed to have been brought to Project MEND. They are helping me be mobile and a more independent person.

I will now be able to go places I was previously limited in going to. I feel like I was given a second opportunity at life.

“How long have you been volunteering with Project MEND?About half a year

Of all the nonprofits in San Antonio, why do you volunteer for Project MEND? Because I have been served and helped by Project MEND before in a time of need, when I fractured my right heel. I love the work that Project MEND provides to the community and to people in need — durable medical equipment.

How do you volunteer for Project MEND? What are some of your tasks?I volunteer at the Project MEND Admin building. I answer the phone at the front desk — make sure when patients call we have their prescriptions on file and received by Project MEND; and I look at the inventory to make sure we have what is needed available to them.

What is your favorite part of volunteering for Project MEND?It’s a wonderful atmosphere to work at. The coworkers are wonderful helping the community — helping patients or clients for them to get the services they need.

Why should other people volunteer for Project MEND?People should volunteer at Project MEND to give back to the community and serve the community in their time of need with more durable medical equipment.

In 2017, we made the unanimous decision to move forward with a $3.2 million dollar capital campaign to combine our warehouse and admin teams into one, state-of-the-art warehouse facility that meets the increasing needs of our service population with greater ease. Our fundraising campaign started strong, with the receipt of land near the Medical Center to build and major gifts from the Nancy Smith Hurd Foundation, Valero Energy Foundation, Impact San Antonio and Bexar County. With an upward trajectory for our services delivered, we are eager to see this capital campaign grow and move into 2018-2019.

In June 2018, we wrapped up our reinstated contract with the Texas Veterans Commission, having served 434 Texas veterans and their family members — a 429% increase from the year prior! With the need for our services in the veteran community apparent, we were awarded an expansion contract from the Texas Veterans Commission in July to serve veterans and their family members throughout all of South Texas.

As we moved toward the end of the fiscal year, we developed a new partnership with the McKenna Foundation in New Braunfels to more fully serve Comal County with their refurbished medical equipment and assistive technology needs. A quick trip down the highway separates San Antonio and Bexar County from New Braunfels and Comal County. Realizing this and understanding the critical need for children, veterans, seniors and all individuals living with disabilities to have access to readily available and affordable medical equipment, Project MEND is excited to build and nurture this relationship with the McKenna Foundation.

We concluded a successful year in September with our 6th Annual Toast of the Town Gala celebrating the Gift of Mobility, honoring Helen Eversberg and Warm Springs Foundation. This event was a major fundraiser for our organization and it was wonderful to have a room full of people investing in mobility for all.

As Project MEND continues to meet and exceed its annual goal of providing more professionally refurbished medical equipment to more individuals in need, our relationships with supporters becomes increasingly more important. We want YOU to be in our future with us, as MEND is on the move and we don’t plan on slowing down!

Fiscal Year 2017-2018 was a year of growth, expansion and mass achievements for Project MEND. It was our 25th birthday and we could not have imagined a better way to celebrate than by serving more people than we ever have in our history. We provided 1,726 services and 3,849 pieces of medical equipment to persons living in 29 counties of Texas!

A YEAR OF GROWTH

We receive over 10,000 pieces of donated medical equipment annually. Donated equipment comes in all conditions, from brand new to needing a lot of work. Licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services, we follow strict rules and guidelines when refurbishing the medical equipment. Of all the equipment we receive, only about 30% is truly refurbishable in its current state! All other equipment is either broken down for parts, passed along to other nonprofits that bring the equipment to other disadvantaged countries, or sold for scrap metal. We work hard to keep equipment out of landfills and into the hands of people in need.

Fun Fact!10,000 PIECES OF DONATED MEDICAL
