Foxworth Grand Opening

GrandOpeningandRibbonCuttingceremoniesforFoxworthCondomini-umsattractedalargegroupMay6,includingCongressmanBradMiller. Followingtheprogram,attendeestouredtwoapartmentsincludingafirst-floor,handicap-accessibleapartmentandathird-floorapartmentfeaturingawalkoutbalcony--toravereviews. Thetwo-bedroom,1,100to1,130-square-footapartmentsincludealaundryroom;open-conceptlivingroomandkitchen;abreakfastbar;nine-footceilings;energy-efficientHVACsystems;centralair;securityandsprinklersystems;EnergyStarappliancesincludingastove,refrigera-toranddishwasher;agarbagedisposalandcustomblinds. TheacquisitionofFoxworthbeganin2009withthepurchaseof14foreclosedcondominiumslocatedintwo,three-sto-rybuildingsandadevelopedbuildingpadforfutureconstruction.Anothersixcondominiums,locatedintheorigi-nalbuildings,werepurchasedfromin-dividualhomeowners.Lastyear,workbeganaddingtwonewbuildingswith12condominiumseachtothecommu-nityandwascompletedonMarch31,2011.FoxworthCondominiumsnowprovidesaffordableapartmentsfor44familiesthroughGHA’spublichousingprogram. TheNeighborhoodStabilizationProgram,whichfundedtheproject,wasdevelopedinresponsetothehighforeclosureratethathasgrippedthecountry.Itprovidesemergencyassis-tancetostateandlocalgovernmentsto
acquireandredevelopforeclosedpropertiesthatmightotherwisebesourcesofabandonmentandblightwithintheircommunities. Smith Homes Honor RollStudent Wins Scholarship
SCHOLARSHIP - Chief Executive Officer Tina Akers Brown honors scholarship winner Tyler C. Johnson of Smith Homes.
TylerC.Johnson,a17-year-oldresidentofSmithHomes,haswona$1,000SERC/NAHROscholarshipforcollege. AnHonorRollstudentattheAcademyatSmithforthelastfouryears,JohnsonplanstoattendUNC. ChiefExecutiveOfficerTinaAkersBrownpraisedheras“apositiverolemodelforyouth.” “Sheishighlythoughtofbyherteachersandthoseshehasworkedwith,”theCEOsaid.“Shelooksforwardtodevelopinghertalents,achievinginschoolandserv-ingasanexampleforothersinhercommunity.” Johnson,arecentinducteeintotheNationalHonorSociety,wasalsoawardedaNationalAchievementScholarship.Shehasbeeninvolvedinstudentgovern-ment--includingservingasadelegatetotheStudentHumanRelationsCommission,volunteersforHabitatforHumanityandbeenactiveinathletics--includingwinningaCoachesAwardforsoftball.Shealsoparticipatesinvolleyballandwresting.

“First Tee” Teaches More Than Just Golf
WheneightGHAyouthdecidedearlierthisyeartoparticipatein“TheFirstTeeoftheTriadGolfProgram,”theyexpectedtolearnthefundamentalsofgolf. But,theyfinishedlearningmoreaboutthefundamentalsoflife. Inadditiontoswingcoaching,puttingdrills,interactivegamesandexercises,theyouthgotacrashcourseinthe“ninecorevalues”--responsibility,honesty,perseverance,confidence,judgment,integrity,courtesy,sportsmanshipandrespect.ItwasallapartoftheGolfProgram’sgoal“toimpactthelivesofyoungpeopleinthePiedmontTriadareaofNorthCarolinabyprovidingeducationalprogramsthatpromotelifeskills,characterdevelopmentandlife-enhancingvaluesthroughthegameofgolf.” Eachweekforsixweeks,localgolfprofessionalsandmembersoftheUNC-GreensborogolfteamworkedwiththeyouthinawhirlwindofactivitythatculminatedinatriptoGillespieGolfCoursefora“teachinground.” Eachoftheyouthcompletedawrittenassessmenttest,aswellaspassingthelife-skillschallengeandgolf-skillsevaluationtowinasetofclubs,golfbagandgolfballs.
FUNDAMENTALS - Local golf professionals joined members of the UNC-Greensboro golf team earlier this year to instruct a group of GHA youth in the game of golf through “The First Tee of the Triad Golf Program.” Along with fundamentals of the game, they also taught the “nine core values” -- responsibility, honesty, perseverance, confidence, judgment, integrity, sportsmanship, courtesy and respect.

Here’safewmorecost-savingtipsforefficientairconditioning.• KeepalldoorsandwindowsclosedwhentheA/Cison,andpulldrapes,blindsandshadesoverwindowsfacingthesun.• Keepyourairconditioningventsinmindwhenyouarrangefurniture.Avoidplacinglargepiecesoffurnituredirectlyinfrontoforontopofvents.• Ifthereisaroomthatisnotbeingused,closethedoortotheroomratherthantryingtoclosetheA/Cventintheroom.• Plan“hotwork”(suchaswashinganddryingclothes,baking,cooking,etc.)forthecoolerhoursoftheday,eitherearlymorningorevening.

TheGHAVikingCheerleadingSquadwonthePHASACHoopsandHopeStateTournamentCheerleadingCompetitionearlierthisyearwithafive-minuteroutinethatincorporatedjazzdancetechniquesandprops. Thenewroutine,“FuturisticBarbies,”puttogetherbyCheerleadingCoachSabrinaAbneyandDanceChoreographerReginaldJohnson,requiredlatepracticehoursandlotsofextraworktobuildpropsandworkonhair,make-upandclothingstyles.Inadditiontopracticesessions,the12teenagegirlsalsotravelledeachweekoftheseasontocheerfortheteam. “Theyworkedextremelyhard,andtheyeachexcelledacademically,aswell,”Abney,OperationSmartChoicesCoor-dinator,said.“I’mjustproudofthem.Theyfocusedonunity,creativityandenergyanddidverywell.” Threecheerleadersalsopulledinindividualawards.MyleekaMorelandwonthe“All-StateCheerleaderAward”andKiaraReeveswonthe“StateTournamentMVPCheerleaderAward.” The“All-AcademicAward”wenttoAnnetteHarris,arecentgraduateofGrimsleyHighSchool,whoplanstoattendUNC-Greensborothisfall.
