FLACKWELL HEATH RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION

At our AGM the following were re-elected:- Janet Smith – Chairman

Chloe Andrews-Jones – Vice Chairman

Charles Colton - Treasurer

We are still looking for a Secretary – please help.

Following the formal AGM meeting we launched our survey ‘YOUR VILLAGE, YOUR OPINIONS’ to run through April and at the time of writing we have had a promising initial response. We have tried to get as many villagers as possible to take part including holding help sessions at the library when the committee were able to assist with using the computers or providing paper copies to fill out. The hope is that it will help us get to know more about you and what you’d like to see in the village for the future, then endeavour to help facilitate your ideas. We’ll update you when we have the results analysis.

Janet Smith 01628 520451 [email protected]

The format of the Abbey Barn South/North workshop was the same as that for the Gomm Valley workshop. This gave us the opportunity to really think about and discuss how the two sites might be developed given their

constraints, such as the tree-lined ride on Abbey Barn South and the bowl shaped topography of Abbey Barn North. The Wycombe Infrastructure workshop was divided into looking at transport in the morning and other infrastructure in the afternoon. Particularly, during the transport discussions, there was thinking outside of the box and radical suggestions proposed. There are huge constraints given the way High Wycombe has developed over the years and the existing transport structure.

Thames Water was represented at the recent Infrastructure Round Table and was challenged as to whether their system could cope with the supply of clean water to the Reserve sites given the concern expressed regarding the supply to Pine Trees (ex RAF Daws Hill). They were also challenged as to whether the Little Marlow sewerage treatment plant will be able to cope given the problems that have occurred over the past year or so. We await their responses to these two questions and any proposals they have to secure the provision of clean water and the disposal of foul waste in the future.

At this time of considerable development we would welcome new members to the group. If you would like to join us please contact me.

Remembering the End of World War Two

As part of the 70th Anniversary Celebrations that mark the end of World War Two (VE Day) the bell at Christ Church will be rung for 2 minutes at 11am on Saturday 9 May and a short Remembrance Service and Wreath Laying will take place at the War Memorial on Sunday 10 May at 12noon.

Festival of FootballFlackwell Heath Minors FC 2015 'Festival of Football' Tournament will be held over the weekend of Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May. Kick-off is at 9am on both days. It's a great village tradition and if we get the good weather it's a great day out for all the family. As well as the football there's a bar, bouncy castle, barbecue, tombola and lots of other fun to be had.

The tournament is truly a community event; as well as the fantastic support we get from the families and friends of all of our players, Juniper Hill School provide some vital parking space, Flackwell Heath Cubs & Scouts help us set up and allow us to use their tents, and we have numerous villagers and local businesses who support us in the build-up to the weekend.

We're keen to hear from anybody else who can support us this year....help put some tents up? sponsor a stall? advertise in our programme? We look forward to welcoming you all in May. Entry is £2.50 for adults, free for children.

Neighbourhood Watch News

May 2015Potential for a ‘phishing’ expeditionMany of you will be aware of the change to the rules concerning ‘Pension Pots’ introduced recently by the Coalition Government. Well, this is a potential area where ‘phishing’ expeditions could be targeted at the unwary, in an attempt by the fraudsters to get you to release your valuable pension savings into their unscrupulous grasp.

Should you receive any unsolicited e-mails (or phone calls) from individuals or organisations claiming to offer ‘free’ advice regarding how you might use a ‘pension pot’ – assuming that you are lucky enough to have one in the first place – be VERY cautious as to how you respond. In fact, the best advice is to simply IGNORE such unsolicited approaches. For your own peace of mind only take advice from either the Government’s Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS) or from an independent pensions advisor that you select on the basis of best advice and choice.

TPAS can be accessed online at: www.gov.uk/pensions-advisory-service

Neighbourhood Policing

In early April, our Neighbourhood Sergeant

– Sgt Mat Lloyd – distributed via TVAlerts a summary of crime and crime-prevention activities for the Chepping Wye Valley policing area. The following crime statistics are encouraging, comparing 2015 with the same period in 2014:

• There have been 23 house burglaries, compared to 28 the preceding year

• There were 69 fewer theft offences

• Bicycle thefts have fallen from 5 to 3

• And violence with injury has fallen from 35 to 31

• Theft from motor vehicle, despite a recent increase, is still at 67 this year compared to 87 over the previous period.

Many of these reductions will have been assisted by the simple precautions advocated by Neighbourhood Watch supported by the police.

At the May meetings, the Institutes will discuss the resolution to come before the National AGM in June. This is a proposal to remove the distinction between nursing and personal care. It is not a straightforward issue and we expect a lively debate in the Albert Hall.

Morning WI

We had a heart-warming visit from volunteers (and 2 dogs) from the 'Hearing Dogs for the Deaf' Centre at Saunderton. The charity officially started in the UK in 1982, after Bruce Foyle (father of Ben) went to the USA in 1979 to investigate this idea. The Centre (the main one in the UK with another in the North plus satellite centres) breed their own puppies from cocker spaniels, labradors, poodles and golden retrievers and some crosses of these. At 8 weeks they are placed in volunteers' homes for a year, for socialising, training and special puppy classes before being matched

to a recipient. We saw a short film demonstrating the kind of assistance they provide which can transform a person's life. With back-up assistance, it is all a costly process over the years, without government funding.

In the following week we held our birthday lunch where we each brought finger food and were entertained by Patricia Purcell talking (plus a few vocals) about her operatic career.

Evening WI

Our original speaker had a problem so his wife came instead: Mrs Catherine Bearder MEP. She is the only Lib Dem among the 10 MEPs in the south-east region. She told us how she had worked her way up through various councils in her quest for the capacity to make a difference in the areas closest to her heart, human trafficking and climate change. She also explained how the EU's institutions operate. A surprisingly interesting evening.

Easter CraftsWe were delighted to host another very successful craft event on Saturday 28 March, when 20 children enjoyed making Easter cards and other Easter crafts. There was a wide range of craft material available and the volunteers enjoyed guiding the children in making their own creations.

It’s our 3rd Birthday!Yes, we have now been operating as a Community Library for 3 years. We would like to thank two groups of people, the volunteers and ‘Friends’, who have enabled us to provide a full library service on behalf of Bucks CC. And we still need your help. If you can spare one morning or afternoon occasionally and feel you would enjoy helping run the Library, we would be pleased to welcome you as a volunteer.

If you would like to help but really do not have the time, you can become a Friend of Flackwell Heath Library (FFHL or ‘Friend’). This helps us and has benefits for you without taking any of your time. For just £5 a year, a ‘Friend’ gets discounted tickets to most library events – our last event sold out twice over and indications are there will be a third performance. As a ‘Friend’ you are also able to vote at the AGM, including election of the Committee. Please consider becoming a “Friend” of the Library. To our existing ‘Friends’ can we remind you that your subscription for 2015/2016 is now due and we look forward to you all renewing for the coming year, and welcoming you to the AGM & BBQ on Sunday 28 June 2015.

Cup winners!Flackwell Heath Minors under 14s won the Berks and Bucks County Junior Cup Final for the first time in the club's 48 year history on Sunday 22 March at Buckingham Athletic against Shenley Milton Keynes.

They won the final on penalties after the game finished 0-0 after extra time. Goalkeeper Isaac Hay was the hero, saving 2 out of 4 penalties. The winning penalty was converted by Will Kitchener. All the boys deserve credit as the Shenley team were very strong and powerful and have not lost a match for 2 years. The boys had a difficult route to the Final beating Burnham, Southcote, Woodley Saints and Marlow.

Flackwell Heath Minors Under 14s' manager, Chris Ayres, dedicated the victory to his close friend, Mark Hobbs, who sadly passed away in 2014. Mark was a regular supporter of the team and was a President of the Flackwell Heath Minors.

March 13 was an eventful fun-filled day at Juniper Hill School where staff and pupils were raising money for Comic Relief.

A challenging target was set; Head Teacher, Gareth Drawmer, volunteered to be gunged at the end of the day if pupils could raise £1,000 through donations. The final count was just over £1,700 and as a man of his word, Mr Drawmer was publicly subjected to a gunging in the presence of pupils, staff, parents and the press. The three lucky children who raised the most money and so were chosen to pour the buckets of slime were Lily, Evie and Claudia.

Thanks to everyone who took part and donated so generously in raising money for Comic Relief. This year the UK government has agreed to double any amount raised by schools making Juniper Hill’s contribution £3,400.

Time for Tennis at FHLTC

Winter is over, summer is on its way bringing with it warm, dry days and a new Tennis season (well definitely one of those things). Nestled in the corner of the recreation ground on Straight Bit, Flackwell Heath Tennis Club is not only one of the most vibrant and active clubs in the area, it also offers great value with annual membership very competitively priced compared with other local clubs and excellent discounts available for families and juniors.

Tennis is a sport for everyone and at FHLTC we recognise that, with organised groups for players of all abilities from rusty rackets on a Thursday morning through to invitational performance squads. The new club committee aims to reflect this by blending a mix of youth and experience. For the first time we have committee members who first joined the club since juniors and have been involved for more than ten years.

Are you interested? Find out what is on offer at the club, and play some tennis. Full schedule on the website: FHLTC.org

Early Schooling in Flackwell & Loudwater Monday 8 June 7.30 – 9.30pm Flackwell Heath Library

We are repeating this popular talk to allow more local folk to find out or reminisce about our local schools.

Mike Dewey will present the history of the early schools in the two villages from the early 1800’s up to the 1940’s. During this illustrated talk, using photographs and images from the original Logbooks and Registers, Mike will consider:

• How schooling moved from a local to a national issue

• The problems involved in establishing the two national schools

• Staffing at the schools

• The schools in the Great War and WW2

After a short break, Jane Dunsterville will rôle-play stories of some of the

villagers recalling their time at the two schools. Other tales and memories will be shown on display panels.

Tickets at £5 ( £3 for Friends of the FHCL ) from Flackwell Heath library.

(Please note this is a ticket only event and they will not be available at the door)

One of the more unusual clubs that meets in Flackwell is the South Bucks Metal Detecting Club. Readers may remember their stall at the Village Picnic last year. Founded in 1977, they now meet at our Community Centre, 7.30pm on the first Wednesday of the month. Their members come from a wide area – some as far as Bicester and Reading. What unites them is an interest in remnants of the past.

At the monthly meetings, they often have speakers on subjects of interest to the hobby. Searches are arranged for members on land in Bucks, Berks and Oxon, with permission and agreement of the Landowner. These searches are controlled by the club. All members are issued with a 'Finds Bag' for them to put all their finds in, marked with their name, date, and location of finds. All bags are collected on site at the end of the search, for recording. Club records contain name of finder, location and identification of find. These records have been kept since club foundation, and are open for inspection by members. Finds are reported to the Landowner, who is often interested in the past history of his ground, together with scans of items of

particular interest. All finds are subject to the 'Treasure Act', and may have to be submitted to the Coroner if considered to be Treasure. Items of historical interest are also reported to the local 'Finds Liaison Officer' from Aylesbury Museum, who attends the monthly club meeting (for contact details, see below).

The detectors they use work by sensing changes in electromagnetic fields; any conductive metal will have an effect, not only iron. How much information can be derived from the signal depends on the sophistication (and cost) of the detector, and the experience of the user. Once there is a signal, careful digging can reveal the source. It might be a coin, piece of horse harness, cap badge, nail...see photo. Most detectorists have their own collection of 'findings'. Some items are impossible to date accurately, but coins can sometimes be dated very precisely, even if they are hundreds of years old.

Above a certain level, the value of a find is shared with the landowner. Of course, the dream is a 'big' find, but these are very rare. What keeps people going is

the lure of the hunt and their growing expertise in and knowledge of the past, mostly in the domestic and agricultural spheres.

There are definite advantages in joining a club – the agreements with landowners give you access, there is advice on legal aspects, and the members are very ready to share their knowledge and experience, which is enlarged by the speakers at meetings.

If anyone is interested in visiting or possibly joining the club – please contact Bob Elliott on [email protected]
