Interesting ChocolateFacts

By Brian K. Rosso, R.D.Chocolate is a food enjoyed by

most people, especially atValentine’s Day. Here are some

interesting facts about chocolate:Worldwide, consumers spendmore than $20 billion per year onchocolate products. It takes about 400 cacao beansto create 1 pound of chocolate.Chocolate is a great source ofantioxidants, which have beenshown to reduce a person’s riskof developing cancer or heartdisease.Snickers is the No. 1 sellingchocolate bar in the world.Eating dark chocolate inmoderation can lower a person’scholesterol levels. The first United States chocolatefactory was built in 1765.

Americans prefer milk chocolateover dark chocolate; however, theconsumption of dark chocolate isincreasing. Try to eat darkchocolate containing at least 40percent cacao (will be stated onthe chocolate candy wrapper) forthe most health benefits. The average American eats 12pounds of chocolate every year. One tablespoon of cocoa powdercontains almost 10 percent of thedaily requirement for iron intake. The first chocolate candy bar wasmade in 1842.Chocolate is made from cacaobeans. However, the cacao bean isactually a seed.Chocolate can offer some healthbenefits, but it should be eaten in

moderation because of the caloriesassociated with the fat and sugar

content.Happy Valentine’s Day!
