A sensation of sorts: Again this year, there will be horses going by; hustle and bustle of the exhibitions; handicrafts; cooking; Lego; chooks; goats; sheep; big bulls; colourful mandolas; wool fleece; wine and information; tallest weeds in town; speed knitting; ginger- cake bake; champion rose; and intricate little competition cards to contain the details and keep all in order. The Clunes Agricultural Show is great for sharing and feeling good. In its maturity, the Show is still a simple, safe and great day out for all. Committees rotate their Chairs every couple of years to keep things fresh. Hats off to the Show Committee and the local community for providing a real McCoy opportunity for everyone to celebrate the surrounding natural beauty, showcase some talent, and take part in a bit of bona fide fun of life. The first Clunes Agricultural Show opened to the public in 1861 with the purpose of bringing people from the local community together to share skills and expertise about what you can do on the land. Exhibitions and judging were guided by the introduction of 13 regulations. Entry cost one shilling. The Show shone valiantly over the years through violent wind storms in 1888; police intervention with regard to crowd control in 1937; and torrential rains in 1954. For over 150 years, people in the local community have not ceased to put on a good annual event, with the year of 1942 being the only exception, where the Show was cancelled due to the interference of war. The Show has experienced many rich and diverse events over its lifetime thus far.

In 1927, the Victorian Young Farmers Committee was introduced, its constitution outlining the provision of: ‘opportunities for learning and applying the principles of democratic leadership, incentives and facilities for self-expression, civic affairs, problem-solving, decision making and more. After the Beatles toured Australia, a Women’s Committee in 1964 introduced a few attractions such

as: ‘Broom Throwing’, ‘Tyre Changing’, and ‘Ladies Wood Chop’. Over fifty years later, these adapted attractions remain on the program to inspire strength and wealth of character.

In 1981, the Ballarat Courier stated: “The Clunes Show is an old-fashioned example of full community participation”. Remarkably, not much has changed in that sense. Local Showenthusiast Tess Brady, who ‘always goes’ and ‘looks at everything’ on the day reckons: “People should always put something in”. There is something for everyone and “… everyone can do their own thing”. Competitions are a platform to encourage our acknowledgement as a community that people can be making great leaps in some areas, we show that there are certain things to be cherished and we offer a prize for them. The essence of taking time to observe and appreciate what is going on around us is one of the attributing factors for the Show’s long life.

A sensation of sorts: Again this year, there will be horses going by; hustle and bustle of the exhibitions; handicrafts; cooking; Lego; chooks; goats; sheep; big bulls; colourful mandolas; wool fleece; wine and information; tallest weeds

in town; speed knitting; ginger-cake bake; champion rose; and intricate little competition cards to contain the details and keep all in order.

Show Time!

Clunes & District Young Farmers Association The rural youth group embrace their slogan: ‘You don’t

have to be one to be one’. Young farmers and friends aged 16 – 35, (previously 16 – 30), work within a range of different agricultural and regional industry areas including: Merino, cropping, cattle, meat sheep, emu and dairy production as well as other fields including: Nursing; teaching; childcare; farmhands; and roustabouts.

Some of the group members recently attended the Y oung Farmers Association AGM in Melbourne to keep abreast of agricultural news and events more broadly. A visit at the Werribee Zoo on the way home was a delightful and well-appreciated bonus.

More recently, the local association are getting ready for the Woolshed Dance & Speed Shear to be held 23rd February 2019. Preparations are in place for setting up the stage and organising for

events, speeches, the band and dancing. The group are anticipating a fun, welcoming, family-friendly celebration for the fourth year running.

Young farmers are super-busy, though committed to maintaining a positive and supportive network. The responsibility of maintaining production on the land is apparent when conversations drift to the implications of weather: “You know it’s looking dry when you see a mob of lambs on a canola paddock”. To which someone notions of comparatively decent conditions:

“Well, just keep going north if you want us to look good”.

Every day in rural life is an opportunity to grow something despite inevitable challenges. People in the group need to be quite selective with their time to meet modern demands of farming. President of Clunes & District Y oung Farmers Association and Vice President of Victorian Young Farmers Association, Jenny Crawford does a good job of rounding up people in the group for a common goal. When scoping out for availability to compete and help out at a show, someone replies: “It depends on work”. Jenny encourages them to make an executive decision: “You are the boss!”

Scheduling volunteering and participation at events can be challenging to work out ahead of time in a constantly changing landscape with independently structured work. Though, the group certainly see the value in a strong network, having maintained moderate and stable membership over the years.

One of the members checks into the meeting remotely via speaker phone to sort out dates, competition shirts and other details in preparation for coming events. “How’s it going? Is the banter flowing as rich as it was last meeting?”

Friendliness is apparent even through the phone line as everyone contributes to conversation with team spirit, humour and good grace.

The group lend a hand at the Clunes Booktown Festival, the Historical Vehicle Show and other local events. ‘Speed Shearing’ events are not taken lightly, with around 20 shearers competing. They also host novelty games throughout

the day including ‘the Gumboot Throw’, ‘Ladies’ Wood Split’, ‘Tug of War’ and a ‘Keg Toss’, as well as helping out at the bar and generally around the grounds. The ‘Wood Splitting Competition’ includes prize money to encourage

balanced participation.

Welcoming and considerate cultural characteristics such as this attribute to the overall diversity, cohesiveness and success of the group. For example, female representation in show competitions is relatively

high from the Clunes & District Y oung Farmers Association. The group usually have a 1:1 ratio of ladies and gentlemen participating in events, compared with competing groups often meeting the minimum competition requirements of at least one female in a team of four. Furthermore, two teams from Clunes & District Young Farmers have been holding the ‘Farmers Challenge’ title at a national level for two consecutive years. Teams competed at the Sydney Royal Show in the triathlon-style competition, consisting of different farming activities including: Drenching; stacking hay bales; Occupational Health and Safety activities; First Aid; and Country Fire Authority skilled tasks and more.

The group have engaged representatives from Farmer’s Health, to help with improving the health, wellbeing and safety of farm men and women, farm workers, their families and the community. As well as working to increase knowledge transfer across farmers, rural professionals, academics and agriculture students.

The Clunes & District Y oung Farmers Association will be welcoming people from within and outside the local community as they put a wide breadth of skills to use through accommodating for and being a part of a range of activities at the upcoming Ballarat Agricultural Show 9 – 11 November and the Clunes Agricultural Show on Saturday 17th November. Looking forward to catching up again then.

Clunes Garden Club By Maryanne Laws

Last month the Garden Club visited Buda historic home and gardens in Castlemaine. We were given a guided tour of the house by Elizabeth and the gardens by Tom, followed by a lovely luncheon in the Garden Room with views over parts of the garden. We had a wonderful day and were made more welcome by our hosts. The weather was glorious and the famous Buda tulip was in full glory. Buda “truly bears the mark of its former owners, the Leviny family” and its intactness is maintained by the “Friends of Buda”. Next month we return to Castlemaine for the “Gardens of the Goldfields” bi-annual open gardens event which should be something to behold. We will picnic luncheon.

As the year draws all to quickly to a close, this is our last outing for 2018 so please join us as a guest, all are welcome. Please contact Maryanne on 0425 232 442 for further information.

Notes from the Past Clunes Guardian & Gazette November 20, 1882

THE PRICE OF BREAD

I have been waiting for a reduction in the price of the “staff of life” Bread - for some weeks. Seeing that the price of flour has considerably lowered, I can hardly see the reason or justice of our bakers keeping up the rate of the flour pound loafs to 7d. Those of us, sir, who have large families to maintain and keep in subsistence cannot afford to give our children as much breads as they require if the price is not coming down a little. If the flour was on the rise, our bakers would soon hasten to increase the price of bread, and I think they should be as quick to reduce it when prices fall.

Clunes Former Free Lending Library By Phil Taig

A circa 1883 report of a thorny issue for the Clunes community was discovered by Louise Wilson

A largely-attended meeting of subscribers to the local Free Library was held in the lecture room of that institution this evening. Mr Rivett H. Bland, president of the library, occupied the chair, and stated that the meeting had been called to consider the question of opening the library on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Philip Boulton then moved that it is desirable to open the reading rooms of the Clunes Free Library on Sunday afternoons from 3 to 5. He had neither the desire nor inclination to enter into an agreement on the respective merits of the question, but contented himself by simply moving the motion. Mr J. E. Meyers, J.P., whilst disclaiming any sympathy with the motion, seconded it, merely as a matter of form.

Lots of heated discussion followed. The local doctor offered that he and others would man the library as a volunteer, but the townsfolk were 4:1 against the idea of disrupting the Sabbath day.

What would they say about today’s ‘Booktown on Sundays’ events at Clunes?

Neighbourly Natter By Lana de Kort

“We cannot predict the future, but we can create it.” George Eliot

Since June this year, Clunes Neighbourhood House has been working with internationally recognised macrohistorian, futurist and author Mike McAllum to explore how the past, present and possible futures impact on our community. This has been part of a Youth & Family project funded by Hepburn Shire Council’s Community Planning Implementation Fund. This project has seeded conversations across community, allowing us to begin exploring the most significant changes people have observed in their lifetime in Clunes, as well as their hopes and fears for the future. Why start with the past? Because if you want to look ahead to the future you must first understand patterns from the past that have made us into the kind of community we are today.

If you attend the upcoming Clunes Neighbourhood House Open Day on Sunday, 4th November 2018 from 2pm – 6pm you’ll see the first of many stories we are collecting as part of this futures dreaming project. Curious? Why not join us to find out more! As a macrohistorian (or specialist in the evolution of large scale social systems) Michael McAllum’s focus is on designing better futures, as the world transitions from a mechanistic and centralized 20th century, to a networked and collaborative society.

Based in Melbourne, Michael has worked with a broad spectrum of public and private sector organisations at the highest levels across Australia and Asia. He has lead conversations on unthinkable change with senior managers from some of the World’s best known companies and was a key architect of the New Zealand Foresight Project. Michael is, the Chief Steward of the Center for the Future Academy which brings together transdisciplinary scholars from across the globe who are interested in narratives of the next social system; a Director of the international consultancy Hames

McGregor & Partners; a foundation member of the Association of Professional Futurists and a member of the Oxford Futures Forum. He is also involved in Chora.space a global strategic innovation platform that designs options for entities whose value proposition is under threat. Michael was instrumental in defining the concept of strategic foresight and co-authored a book on the subject in 2001. In addition to another book (Designing Better Futures) and a number of critically acclaimed essays, Michael thesis was on the Third Industrial Revolution and the Emerging Collaborative Age. He argues that this new way of thinking provides opportunities for cities, communities and institutions to create new value and beneficial arrangements in ways that have been hitherto almost impossible.

Sustainability Group - Latest News By Barbara Curzon-Siggers

Spring is here and our minds turn to the campaign on waste which continues with members of the Clunes Sustainability Group part of the shire wide Community Recycling Forum which met twice in the last few months. The focus is on local and how we can all contribute to reducing the amount of waste heading to landfill. Councillors Kate Redwood and Fiona Thomas are involved as are council project and program managers.

Apparently a great number of us in the shire aren't good at separating out rubbish from recyclables and organic waste...ahem...so the Forum with the Shire is developing an education and communications campaign to help.

Glass recycling needs a new approach and members of the Forum at developing a potential approach with glass separation bins. Works well elsewhere.

Hepburn Shire Council draft Plastic Wide Policy is currently under discussion but not available for general consumption yet - stay tuned!

Also we're proposing shire owned and auspiced mobile community green waste mulching equipment and a range of possibilities are under discussion - again, stay tuned.

The anaerobic digester - updated info indicates the pilot will now be located in Creswick

A Repair Cafe has been launched in Daylesford with volunteer sewers, tech-savvy and electronic and mechanic whizzes, plus tool sharper setting up every 3rd Sunday commencing 21/10 in the Victory Park building, Daylesford.

Stay posted for further discussion re bulk buying of worm farms, mushroom farming using coffee grounds provided without plastic packaging.

E-waste two sites in Ballarat are: Officeworks 116 Creswick Road - 5320 1400 Suez Recovery Centre 358 Dowling Road, Wendouree. What's e-waste? Check out https://mri.com.au/dropzone/

Stay tuned for updates on the Hepburn and Z-net and Solar Bulk buy project, the Anaerobic Digestor, updates on renewable energy production, storage and distribution and more in December.

Look out for our table at November and December Farmers market with ideas and information, come and speak with us...and look for us at your community group soon!

The Clunes Show - A Great Family Day Out By Gayle Wrigley

Set some time aside on Saturday November 17th, 2018 to visit the Clunes Show!

Now in it’s 158th year, this traditional country show promises a great day out for locals and visitors alike.

In a day filled with varied activities, here is just a snippet of what you might see and do:

Enjoy local food and wine in the pavilion, whilst lapping up some of the roving entertainment

Enjoy music on the stage from the Maryborough Big Band and the Wesley Bands

Watch the wide range of horse events happening on the arena all day

Meander through displays and competitions showcasing local agricultural produce

Giggle at the ferret racing, keg throwing, scarecrow competition and ladies wood splitting - or even have a go yourself!

Take the kids to the mobile zoo, the mini circus, the puppet show, the face painter and the sideshows

Take in the arts and crafts displays including the work of local school children

Marvel at the creative talents of local cooks and gardeners

Urge the dogs at the dog high jump, and; Take in the sights on the Cobb and Co coach, or a

trike tour

And that’s just the start.

There’s a rural ambassador, show girl and show boy competitions, a bute ute competition, tug of war competition and a display of vintage engines.

Also attending will be the Victorian Gorse Taskforce (VGT) to provide information and advice to those who have gorse on their properties.

This is the first time they have attended, and is

an exciting step towards raising awareness, promoting best practice management and increasing community capacity around controlling gorse in the state.

For those who are thirsty, the outdoor bar is full of character (and characters!) and is a great place to relax and take in the sights.

And of course, don’t miss the Grand Parade on the arena at 3pm!

In the evening, there’s a bar, BBQ and live music.

At $15 admission for adults, $5 for children and $35 for families, where else would you go for more fun and better value?

“See you at the Clunes Show!”

The completed trail will provide additional picturesque walking opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Stage 1 completed works include developing a Cultural Heritage Management Plan, a flood study and site surveys of the creek crossings.

We are currently engaging a structural engineer to develop the first creek crossing on Creswick Creek. Due to the flood levels and the span, a bridge is not possible so the intention is for a low-impact elevated walkway that will sustain ‘moderate’ flood levels and flows. Once the base structural design is complete it will be sent to the North Central Catchment Management Authority for comment. We intend for construction to take place over summer when the creek level is the lowest.

Masonic Lodge Provides Support to Local Welfare Program Media Release

The Emergency Relief Program at Clunes Community Health has received a much needed boost this month with a donation of $7,000 from the All Nations Masonic Lodge in Clunes and the Freemasons Foundation Victoria.

Apart from assisting clients in financial hardship issues, the program also provides crisis intervention, advocacy, referral services and generalist counselling.

The program is available to those with a current Healthcare or Pension Card, with annual financial assistance

in the form of food and fuel vouchers capped at $100 for singles and $200 per family.

In 2016-2017, Hepburn Health delivered $3,000 in Emergency Relief in and around Clunes. The program was able to provide financial assistance to some 50 individuals. “Hepburn Health plays an important role in delivering Emergency Relief to communities across the Hepburn Shire,” says Hepburn Health CEO Maree Cuddihy. “This program is critical in supporting our communities as Hepburn Shire is ranked amongst the highest in social disadvantage across the whole Central Highlands region.“ She added, “We very much appreciate the contribution of the All Nations Masonic Lodge and Freemasons Foundation Victoria in supporting this program. The donation of $7,000 will go a long way to supporting vulnerable people in Clunes and surrounding areas.”

The cheques were presented to Hepburn Health Service’s Manager for Fundraising, Events and Marketing Peter McConvill by Merv Romeo, Worshipful Master of the All Nations Lodge at Clunes. The Freemason’s Foundation provided $6,700 and the All Nations Lodge added $300 to this generous community contribution. The Freemason’s Foundation has contributed millions of dollars to local communities throughout Victoria over some years. The Freemasons of Victoria continue to offer considerable support to local communities and Clunes is no exception.

SPORTS NEWS

Clunes Football Netball Club By Chris McLennan

The Clunes FNC remains busy in the off season with our first Community function run on the first weekend in October at Bushy and Andy’s Shearing Shed with the Annual Pet Sheep Shearing Day. Thanks particularly going to Shearers Lachy Wrigley, Ben Newton, Jamie Baird, Tim Barry and Matt Zimmer. Andy and family did a fantastic job of co-ordinating the day on Friday and

Saturday. Thanks to Peter Hill, Matt Wrigley, John Bedwell and Harold Coon for supplying trailers and the catching of sheep on Friday and delivering back home on Saturday. John Chatham, Stuart Sobey and Jen Rimene looked after the wool and there were plenty of other helpers on hand. Thanks to everyone for the weekend of efforts.

Also the club completed a day at Bunnings Sausage sizzle in Ballarat. A huge thank you to the Stinchcombe family for the successful co-ordination and work on this event.

We look forward to the Clunes Show on Saturday 17th November. We hope to see plenty of smiling faces around the bar as we return for another year. It’s a great family day out so come along.

The club would also like to promote ‘Bushy’s Cut Out’ a quick shear event to be held at the Clunes Showgrounds on Saturday 8th December. A big day is planned with a quick shear event and auction of ‘Goods and Services’ to be held. The event will be publicised through local channels in the coming weeks and the club will be assisting the family with the running of this event. We are expecting to see plenty of locals turn out. Please save the date in your calendar.

We continue to search for more members and welcome anyone wishing to join us so we can become a better club. We are encouraging anyone with kids to join us as we believe it is a great place to have your family grow up and learn netball and football skills. Come and join our family.

Neil (Bull) Millgate Oval By David Dorizzi

Hepburn Shire Council in partnership with the Victorian Government, Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria have been the major players in the Clunes Turf Wicket Replacement and Irrigation project.

Great job by the Clunes Cricket club for being proactive in looking to upgrade the facilities at the Clunes oval. This new pitch will be a huge benefit to all user groups. More runs, no mud.

The pitch has drainage, independent irrigation system and sods of Santa Anna couch have been installed to get the wicket off to a flying start.

Clunes Bowling Club By Sheila Hollingworth

In these days of rising power prices, and a greater community desire for reducing greenhouse emissions, installing some form of greener energy technology makes good sense.

It particularly makes great sense for sporting clubs that have limited revenue, high power costs from running fridges and air-conditioning in summer, and that have a large clubhouse roof that easily accommodates solar panels.

Over winter the Clunes Bowling Club installed a solar power system as a result of three successful grant applications to Hepburn Shire (their ‘Toward Zero Community Grants’), Acciona Energy (that owns the Waubra Wind Farm) and the Hepburn Wind Farm’s ‘Energy Fund’.

These combined grants mean the Club will hopefully be able to generate all the power it needs, thereby saving thousands each year and reducing its energy footprint.

The Club has also been able to replace its clubroom chairs, which were acquired second-hand more thirty years ago. This is thanks to another successful grant application – to the Creswick & District Community Bank Branch – and a generous personal donation from Karen Byrnes, in memory of her husband Mark, who was a much loved and valued member of the Club.

In case other clubs or organisations are ‘greens’ with envy at these successful grant-getting efforts, be aware that the above only happened after ~120 hours of volunteers efforts. But there are many grants available out there, and they play an invaluable role in keeping our community running.

Here’s to a great 140th season for the Club this year – and to many more.
