Community Wastewater Management System – Desludging of Septic Tanks

As part of the operating and maintenance of Council’s Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS), Council provides a septic tank desludging program to properties within the Robe township that are connected to the CWMS. To prevent sludge passing into Council’s drains, our contractor, Envirogen Industrial Services attends each property on a 4 year cycle to remove accumulated sludge from the tanks. Properties that are not connected to the CWMS, which dispose of their effluent to on- site soakage drain still need to be desludged routinely at the owners expense. Should you have any questions please contact the Council.

FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Zebra Crossings Cr David Loxton is seeking the community’s comments regarding the following article that appeared in the Local Government Association Newsletter. SA Councils will now consider whether zebra crossings will once again ‘stripe’ urban, suburban and country local roads, with the State Government giving a greenlight to Councils to re-introduce the crossings to reduce pedestrian accidents. Collaboration between the Local Government Association and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, with the backing of all SA Councils, has produced Operational Instructions to streamline the installation of zebra crossings on local roads in Adelaide and country towns. Zebra crossings were replaced by pedestrian-activated light-controlled crossings in the 1970s. The crossings, which can only be placed on 50 km/h roadways, require drivers to slow to 30 km/h and to give way to pedestrians on or about to enter the marked area. Councils’ call for the reintroduction of zebra crossings was introduced as a Notice of Motion by Light Regional Council at the 2012 LGA Ordinary General Meeting and was unanimously endorsed by delegates representing all SA Councils. As a result, the LGA established a reference group to develop guidelines for the safe use of ‘on-street’ zebra crossings. This group is represented by the LGA, Department of Planning, Transport and infrastructure (DPTI), Light Regional Council, The Barossa Council, City of Onkaparinga, City of Prospect, Adelaide City Council (ACC), and the LGA Mutual Liability Scheme Please forward any comments to Council via [email protected] or P.O. Box 1 Robe S.A. 5276 Upgrade of Jumbos’ landing The Robe and Districts Lions Club has developed a project to upgrade Jumbo’s landing to provide improved facilities for visitors and locals who wish to access the towns waterways, fish and birdwatch. Council is supportive of this redevelopment, has approved the concept plans and will be working in partnership with the Lions Club and the South East Drainage Board to bring this concept into reality. This project will be a terrific example of what can be achieved when Council and the community work together.

To the Robe Community The Football and Netball Leagues within the South East are going through a period of change which may have a significant impact upon the structure of the competitions in the future. The three leagues within the South East have appointed a commission to undertake a review of the three competitions with the view of setting strategies and plans in place to manage the competitions into the future. The South Australian Community Football Board have also introduced significant changes into the player payment system which will have a major impact on the ability of clubs to attract and retain players of high quality from outside the local club. As yet, the Robe Football Club is unsure as to the impact of these changes on our club and the Mid-South East Football League. The Robe Football Club have always been at a disadvantage in attracting players to the club due to our location and this is borne out by the available numbers of reserve and senior colt’s players this season. The Football Club does not have the advantage of being located next to a major population centre i.e. Millicent or Mt Gambier. In this period of change, the Football Club more than ever need the support of the community to ensure that recreational facilities and opportunities for organised recreation and sport are available to the youth of our community. One only needs to look at the towns of the Mid North of the State that have lost their sporting clubs, to see impact of this loss on the economy of the town and vibrancy of its population. The current committee of the Football Club are working hard to ensure that the Club is in a position to adapt to whatever challenges we face in the future but the Club does need the support of the whole community to achieve this. The Club is looking for the community to assist and support the club in any way possible. If you are in a position to assist the club in any way, be it volunteering, sponsoring, playing etc. it would be greatly appreciated. It would be a shame to see the club falter and for people to say I should have helped but it is too late. The Robe Football Club is your Club so get involved by contacting the undersigned or the Secretary, Natalie Skeer 0438 877 082. Trevor Ling President - 0407 326 293
