What We’ve Accomplished in 2017Continued from page 1

• Verizon project continues. Board decided to have antenna installed on an XCEL pole in open space.

• Fifteen new trees were added to community.

• Baguette drainage area was upgraded with new material. Nearby hillside has been seeded.

Landscape Committee MinutesNovember 22, 2017

Members in attendance were Anne Marie Jacques-Koski, Bill Lueschen, Rex Williams, and Lyn Jacobs. Heather Renfro sat in too. Landscaper Mike Bennett was not able to come.

There was no formal agenda for the meeting. Lyn and Bill had met earlier to update the landscaping contract, and had some suggestions. They asked for input from those in attendance. One area was clarified, and Lyn will get the finished contract to the committee and the Board.

We went over the “to-do” list for Longview Landscape that was compiled at the last meeting. Lyn will send it to Mike Bennett. Some items remained from an earlier list: at an earlier meeting, we asked Mike to provide an estimate for adding more crusher fines to some of the trails. It’s been noticed that some of the “scum” at Kimberly pond is lying on the banks along the trickle channel. If left unattended, it will cause the vegetation to die, so we asked Mike to remove it. Two areas along fence lines need to be trimmed, as well as the oak trees along Sapphire Pointe Blvd., so these items were added to the list.

Mike has removed nine trees that had been marked in the community, trimmed some others, winterized the fountains, and provided the Board with an estimate for doing some irrigation work at Cutter’s Ridge.

Part of the landscape committee was walking the Cutter’s Ridge area during the meeting. Kent George arranged for REConstruction Experts to walk the area to give us an unbiased assessment of what needs to be done.

Respectfully submitted, Lyn Jacobs

Garden Tips for January (Too Much) Salt and Plants, a Bad Combination

We are approaching the time when icy streets and sidewalks may again make walking and driving hazardous. Ice melting products can help keep us safe, however these products vary in their ice melting abilities and safety to nearby plants. There are 5 main materials that are used as deicers:

Calcium chloride is the traditional ice-melting product. Though it will melt ice to minus 25 degrees F, it will form slippery, slimy surfaces on concrete and other hard surfaces. Plants are not likely to be harmed unless excessive amounts are used. It is fast acting and more effective than rock salt. This product can damage grass and plants if over applied.

Rock salt is sodium chloride and is the least expensive material available. It is effective to approximately 20 degrees F, but can damage soils, plants and metals, and paving surfaces.

Magnesium chloride is effective down to minus 13 degrees F, and is more effective than sodium chloride. (This, and the next 2 products, can also damage plants if over applied.)

Potassium chloride is effective down to 25 degrees.

Urea is a fertilizer that is sometimes used to melt ice. Though it is only about 10% as corrosive as sodium chloride, it can contaminate ground and surface water with nitrates. Urea is effective down to 10 degrees F, but works better between 25-30 degrees F.

Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA), a newer product, is made from dolomitic limestone and acetic acid (the principal compound of vinegar). CMA works differently than the other materials in that it does not form brine like salt, but rather helps prevent snow particles from sticking to each other on surfaces. It has little effect on plant growth, but can

damage concrete surfaces. Less corrosive than chloride products, be aware that performance decreases below 20 degrees F.

The best option is to remove the ice and snow by hand when possible. If choosing to use a product completely read the label before application. Using limited amounts of these products should cause little injury. Problems accumulate when they are used excessively--over application takes place to make sure ice and snow melts. These products can damage concrete surfaces, as well as plants and grass that grow alongside walks and driveways. Problems do not usually show up until spring or summer.

Buildup of salt in the soil makes it difficult for plant roots to absorb water. Excess sodium affects soil structure, and may result in poor infiltration and increased erosion. Sodium ions can displace essential plant nutrients, decreasing soil fertility, and accumulation will also inhibit seed germination of grasses and wildflowers as well.

Damage varies depending on the concentration of salts, the amount of precipitation, the type of soil, and the condition of the plants. Healthy, mature plants that are not drought-stressed will withstand salts better than newly established, young plants.

May you and your plants be safe!

The Castle Rock Colorado Genealogical Society Find out much more are www.CRCGS.org

Happy New Year from CRCGS!We are kicking off the new year with great classes and presentations for genealogy buffs, no matter how much research you have done. There is one special event that will be of great interest to those who got DNA test kits this holiday season, and are wondering about what to do with the results. We’re here to help!

Mark these dates on your calendar.......and join us!

On Thursday, January 4, from 6:30-8:30 pm, we invite you to an informal discussion focusing on Pennsylvania research. Discover websites, techniques, and time-saving tips from the experience of others who have Pennsylvania ancestry too. No registration.... and as always it is FREE.

On Saturday, January 20, from 10:00-Noon, Wendy Dillenschneider will present a program that many of us have been hoping for...”Ancestry DNA: Who are all these people and why do I care?” Sending in your sample got you some information.....but what to do with it is a puzzle to many. Come and hear about the steps you need to take next. All welcome, no registration, and no cost.

On Tuesday, January 23, from 6:30-8:30 pm, Noel Ferre will bring us a fresh way to approach our ancestors’ lives. She will present a look at Social History, from a genealogical perspective. What happened in great-grandmother’s town that made her leave it? Why would Uncle Ralph leave his job for a new life in a far-away state? What were the historical events that influenced your family to end up where they are today? This is a wonderful glimpse at the past, and touches on an aspect of research that can open your eyes to amazing discoveries. Please register. Class is FREE. (possible $5 for handouts)

Every Monday the library is open, CRCGS presents an informal forum for family researchers of all experience levels. We cover many topics, ask (and often answer) questions about websites, books, software, organization methods....whatever attendees bring to the table. If you’ve got a problem, or need help finding a mystery person, bring it to the group! Always FREE, and all are welcome.

Visit the Calendar of Events on CRCGS.org for more upcoming classes and events, and to find out about Membership in Castle Rock Genealogical Society. We are a 501(c)3, non-profit society.
