    Do Not Be Afraid

For our amazing daughter Miryum, who is getting married this Sunday to her wonderful chatan, Judah. The following story was actually told to

me by the author, Moe Mernick, and it is autobiographical.

I n observant circles, on the Shabbat before the wedding the groom is called to the Torah to recite a blessing. People sing and clap and throw candies…but Moe was freaking out. You see he had grown up

with a debilitating stutter. It was so bad that there were times when he literally could not say his name or even "hello". He had figured out a way to word switch, and use an alternative word, when he could not pronounce a particular word. But the blessing is the blessing and he

could not switch it to something else. There was nothing else to do. All his future wife’s family and friends would be there to celebrate, and he was petrified. On that Shabbat, as he was called to the Torah, he was

sweating and breathing heavily. The reader pointed at the words in the Torah and Moe suddenly became calm. The words were:

“And God said to Moshe (Moe) – do not be afraid!” God was giving him a sign. He was not telling him it would be smooth or

easy. He was telling him, I am here with you, and it is all for the best. We all have challenges. Do not be afraid. He is always with you and He

always loves you. All of life’s challenges are just different gifts to help us grow.

Advanced Halachic Bulletin If you forgot or were unable to make havdolo on motzei shabbos, you can still make it on Sunday morning over wine or chamar medina and the brocho of hamavdil.

Rav Sheinberg held that all beer and liquor, and even coffee and tea and juice are considered chamar medina and therefore suitable for the kiddush before the meal, and havdolo. However it is appropriate to use wine / grape juice

Rav Moshe Feinstein and Rav Yaakov Kaminetsky held that soda was not considered chamar medina.

Rav Eliashuv held that since everyone drinks soda it is considered chamar medina
