DETAIL The Children’s Festival was held in Civic Park with the theme ‘Bushland Adventure’. The event was opened by the Mayor. Approximately 2000 - 3000 patrons attended the event. A central feature of the festival was the stage entertainment. This year, the performers included local high school bands, live animal shows, educational indigenous performances and children’s dance groups, as listed below:

North Sydney High School Band Cammeray School Concert Band Mango Dance Studio Evolution Performance Centre Walangari Karntawarra Freckle & Speckle Wild Aussies Australian Wildlife Displays North Sydney All Stars Centre Stage Academy

Throughout Civic Park the bushland festival theme continued with giant baubles hanging from trees, bunting painted by toddlers at North Sydney Family Day Care, a giant banner created by artist Tim DeHann with the youth at Planet X Youth Centre and stallholder decorations and costumes. The entertainment and activities continued with a range of themed activities including:

Bushcare bug shows with Rangers on the Run Storytelling with the Aboriginal Heritage Office Sustainability workshop with Reverse Garbage Second hand children’s book and toy stalls Bumble Bee Balloon Twister Tiger Belly Jumping Castle Kiddie Pillar Jumping Castle Kindifarm Face painting Dramatic camping and hula hoop play Arts and crafts such as Playdough creatures, Banksia Men, stone painting, beaded

dragonflies and bushland wands Educational obstacle course with local Scout groups

Some of the activities above were provided by contractors but the majority where offered by local Children’s services groups that provided the activity for free or as a fundraiser. All of the Centre’s used the day as an opportunity to promote their services to the community. Positive feedback was received by several members of the community verbally and by email, and further positive feedback was received in a short survey from approximately 90 respondents. The surveys listed the favourite activities as free arts and crafts activities, play equipment, school bands and live animal exhibits, and respondent’s suggestions for next year’s festival Overall, a preference for learning and creativity through interactivity and engaging hands-on activities was evident in feedback received.
