According to the World Food Summit, food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active life (FAO, 1996). Food security was prioritised by the South African government in 2010 and is closely linked to source of income, household structure, health, access to water and education (Du Toit, 2011).
