Fro m t h e R a bb i ’s S t u d y Family road trips. College study abroad. USY Pilgrimage. Getaways with friends. There is something about traveling with others that can bring people

closer, build relationships and create adventure and excitement. In June of 2017, we are excited to be offering a trip to Spain and Israel through the Melton Seminars. Over the years, dozens of members of the Kansas City Jewish Community have gone on Melton Seminars around the world. The Florence Melton School for Adult Jewish Learning has made an indelible impact on the Kansas City Jewish Community for over a decade with teachers from every denomination, and it boasts hundreds of alumni. Melton’s learning comes alive with knowledgeable and engaging teaching, interactive

discussion and original Jewish texts in modern English translation curated by scholars from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Melton Seminars could be described as “Melton in 3-D”. I can’t wait to go to Spain with members of our Kansas City Jewish community. One of the most exciting - and least known - areas of Jewish history to American Jews is the thousands of years history of Sephardic Jewry. Because the majority of American Jews are Ashkenazim (our ancestors lived in Western and Eastern Europe), we never learned much about the Jews of Spain. Next June, I invite you to come with me and Melton’s master educator, Haim Aronowitz, to Spain and Israel to walk in the footsteps of the poets, rabbis and mystics of Spain - and to see the impact of Sephardic Judaism in Israel. We are excited to offer this trip in conjunction with HBHA and

A Spiritual Adventure Awaits…The Florence Melton School for Adult Jewish Learning. This trip is designed for the person who is looking for an engaging and interactive learning trip, and perhaps has already been to Israel at least once - but wants to deepen their Jewish knowledge. It will be an opportunity for adventure, for learning and to build friendships. To register and get more information, please do so online at http://www.meltonseminars.org/spain-israel-seminars.aspx. This trip might not be for everyone - so, we are also laying the groundwork now to begin planning a congregational family mission to Israel over winter break of 2017-2018. If you are interested in being pioneers on this trip - please email me directly at [email protected].

“I love learning about a whole new culture, and it’s really fun,” she says of her job. Trinity Standridge started at CBS as Rabbi Glickman’s assistant in March. She handles all of the Rabbi's calls & scheduling, prepares for his meetings and classes, as well as pro-

ducing the Shabbat brochure, orga-nizes the Yizkor book and assists with other ritual activities. Trinity grew up in Olathe and went to Emporia State, majoring in Theater earning a BFA. Her hobbies and past-times are reading, sewing and

painting. In her spare time, she makes costumes for local film and theater productions, as well as clothes for people. She lives with her cats, Paige and Sonic, in Overland Park. She likes Mexican and spicy food. Trinity is a welcome addition to the CBS staff.

Execut i ve l y Speak ingMy Final Article

As you all know, I was requested to “step aside” as the Executive Direc-tor of Congregation Beth Shalom which I will be doing on Friday, September 2nd, the end

of my contract. I hope that during my five years here I have been able to make a positive impact on both the current and future of this synagogue. My journey in leading this synagogue was not done alone. I was joined by a team of bright, energetic and dynamic staff members. Together, we laughed, we cried, we shared our successes and learned from our fail-

ures. We have a very unique camara-derie which I hope we can continue past the work environment. Most importantly, my thanks go out to you, the members, for all your support during my tenure here; for without you, Beth Shalom would not exist. It has been my pleasure to serve you. I ask that you continue to support this synagogue. I know how many of you feel; I heard you loud and clear. But keep in mind that change is a constant in life, as there are things and or people that we are unable to change. I am so grateful for some of the wonderful friends and friendships that

I have made here; you all know who you are. Kisses and hugs to each and every one of you. Friendship is not defined by an office or a building, so we will still see each other in other set-tings. So, to you the staff and the con-gregants, I wish you all good health, prosperity and happiness. Stay in touch, email, [email protected], Face-book, or cell phone 954-263-6051. Regards and Happy New Year,

Summer Camp Was Wonderful We had two amazing camp ses-sions this summer. A record number of campers enrolled, and everyone had a great time. It is hard to believe that school starts on August 22. We have a few more openings in each of the age groups from 18 months to 5 years, so spread the word if you know of anyone who has just moved to town or has not enrolled their child for preschool. Please have them call Judy Jacks Berman at 913-647-7287 for a tour of our wonderful facility. Please make sure they tell me you referred them, and you will receive a $100 gift card from Amazon as a thank you for telling them about our great school! Enjoy your last few weeks of summer.

LeChayim Chavurah recently toured the Charles Evans Whittaker U.S. Courthouse. Judge Arthur Federman and his mother, Ann Federman, spoke to the group pointing out that this was the same court-house, only at that time at a different location, where the Judge's parents, Ann and Isak, were sworn in as naturalized citizens along with their one month old son, Arthur. In the Bell Room there is a large collection of pictures with one captioned "Portrait of an American Family" showing the naturalization of Ann and Isak Federman. Years later, the Federman family gathered at the courthouse to see Arthur being sworn in as a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge.

As I write this article, I am on a flight to Israel. Around me are every sort of person -- men, women and so many children and babies. Orthodox Jews,

American Christians on pilgrimage, Arabs, Muslims, a few groups of teens on summer programs, business men and women. There are so many types of kippot on board -- black velvet on long-bearded men, black suede on closer-cropped heads, and colorful knitted kippot on men I think might be far more accepting of me in my leadership position in our community. There are women in sweats, in shorts

and in long sleeves and skirts. And I wonder how they would classify me... Coming to Israel is a mixed bag for me. It is home. It is the home of my father, his father, and his before him. But again and again I chose not to make it my home. Every time I am in Jerusalem, my soul seems to expand with a fullness it achieves nowhere else, and yet I know I cannot live here during my most productive years. And every time I come, I am asked the same question. Why is the great granddaughter of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda living in the United States? Several years ago, in the summer of 2006, I came to Israel for a summer

of study at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem on a Legacy Grant. It was, for me, a summer of exploration of self as much as Talmud learning. I came to realize that my role among the Jewish People is to connect, to engage and to bring Israel into the heart of American Jews. Sometimes you recognize that the place you love best, your truest home, can never be the place where you live, but rather, it lives within you. For the next week or so, I will breathe Israel in so that I can bring her back home to Kansas.Shalom, shalom, lehitra'ot!

Preheat oven to 400º. Knead flour, salt, oil and water into a medium-firm dough. Divide dough into three small round loaves. Brush each loaf with melted butter and let sit for one hour. Peel apples and cut into thin slices. Add granulated sugar, raisons, grated lemon peel, lemon juice, rum, cin-namon, bread crumbs and mix gently with your hands. Sprinkle a tablecloth evenly with flour. Roll the dough out as thinly as possible on the tablecloth. Place your hands, stretched out flat, under the dough and draw the dough over the back of your hand so that it becomes thinner and thinner. Put the filling on the first third of the dough. Fill and roll the dough together using the tablecloth to help by raising the end with the filled dough just enough that the strudel begins to roll by itself. Brush the rolled apple strudel with egg yolk and bake it in a preheated oven at 400º for approximately 30 minutes or until golden brown. When cool, slice the strudel. May use powdered sugar to deco-rate.(From a cooking demonstration aboard the Amadeus Silver River Boat)

The Rabbinical Association of Greater Kansas City will again offer a community-wide course, “Judaism for Conversion Candidates” beginning August 25. The year-long course will be taught on a rotating basis by rabbis from the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox movements and will acquaint those considering conversion to Juda-ism with what it means to live Jewishly. Each student will be required to secure a congregational rabbinic sponsor by November 1 and meet the conversion requirements developed by that sponsor. The class provides a comfort-able forum for students to learn about Jewish holidays, home celebrations, lifecycle observances, rituals and Jewish prayer, Torah, Judaism’s view of God and about our reli-gion’s movements. Each class includes a 30 minute Hebrew component. Participants will combine Jewish learning with Jewish “do-ing” as they become part of a shared community and create Jewish memories through Shabbat, Havdalah and holiday celebrations and observances. The future Jews by choice will have the opportunity to meet one another and to learn not only about Judaism but also about the Kansas City Jewish community. Classes will meet Thursday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and the location will rotate among the syna-gogues. An orientation session is scheduled for August 18, 7:15 to 8:30 pm at the Jewish Community Campus. The course fee is $250 and includes course textbooks. For registration or additional information, visit kcrab-bis.org or contact Annette Fish, Rabbinical Association Administrator/Program Director, at [email protected] or913-327-4622. Funding for this program is generously provided by the Menorah Heritage Foundation.

Parashat Hashavua is an ongoing, monthly program taking place every third Shabbat of the month at 9:00 am in the Conference Room. The goal of this program is to engage its participants in a stimulating discussion of the weekly Torah portion in a welcoming atmosphere, where the difference of opinions is respected, and questions are encouraged. The participants enjoy the deep level of discus-sion and Kabbalistic insights into the text. The next session will take place on August 20 when Parashat Vaetchanan will be discussed. Everyone is welcome. For more information, contact Svetlana Sorkin at 913-393-1715 or [email protected].

Homemade Mandel Bread

Just a reminder if you are miss-ing your Bubbie’s homemade mandel bread, Sisterhood is selling mandel bread baked by Bill Shapiro, husband of our Sisterhood member Joyce Shap-

iro, using an old family recipe. It is oh so yummy. The mandel bread is pack-aged in a quantity of two dozen for $10, with or without nuts. Ingredients are parve but made in the CBS dairy

kitchen. Order forms will be available in the Sisterhood Gift Shop. Questions? Call or email Milisa Flekier at 913-681-9298 or [email protected].
