Wide braceletSide one[1] On 2 yd. (1.8m) of Fire-line or conditioned Nymo (Basics, p. 124), attach a stop bead (Basics) 6 in. (15cm) from the end.[2] Pick up two color C 110 seed beads, a 4mm round bead, two Cs, a color A fire-polished bead, two color D 110s, and an A. Sew back through the first C picked up, going in the same direction (figure 1, a–b).

[3] Pick up a C, a 4mm round, two Cs, and an A, and sew through the last D picked up in the previous stitch, going in the opposite direction (b–c). [4] Pick up a D, an A, two Cs, and a 4mm round, and sew through the last C picked up in the previous stitch (c–d).[5] Pick up a C, a color B fire-polished bead, two Ds, and a B, and sew through the last C picked up in the previous stitch (d–e).

[6] Pick up a C, a 4mm round, two Cs, and a B, and sew through the last D picked up in the previous stitch (e–f).[7] Pick up a D, a B, two Cs, and a 4mm round, and sew through the last C picked up in the previous stitch (f–g).[8] Pick up a C, an A, two Ds, and an A, and sew through the last C picked up in the previous stitch (g–h).[9] Repeat steps 3–8 until the band is approximately ½ in. (1.3cm) short of the

Mental mantra: For each stitch on the first side (except the first and last stitches), you’ll pick up five beads – a small bead, a big bead, two small beads, and a big bead – prior to joining to the previous stitch. The exact bead sequence is not intui-tive, however, so until you understand the pattern, Yvanne suggests repeating this to yourself as you’re working: small, big, small, small, big, join.

desired length. End with step 4, but pick up an extra C after you pick up the first five beads. Sew through the last C picked up in the previ-ous stitch, going in the same direction (figure 2, a–b), then continue through the next A, two Ds, A, and C (b–c).

Sidetwo[1] Pick up a C, a 4mm round, two Cs, and an A, and sew through the last D added on the first side (figure 3, a–b). [2] Pick up a D, and sew back through the A and the last C added in the previous stitch (b–c).[3] Pick up a C, a 4mm round, two Cs, and an A, and sew through the D added in the previous stitch (c–d). Continue through the next

three beads of the band (d–e).[4] Pick up a C and a 4mm round, and sew through the last C picked up in the previ-ous step (e–f).[5] Pick up a C, a B, two Ds, and a B, and sew through the C picked up in the previous stitch (f–g). Continue through the next three beads of the band (g–h).[6] Pick up a C and a B, and sew through the last D picked up in the previous stitch (h–i).[7] Pick up a D, a B, two Cs, and a 4mm round, and sew through the C picked up in the previous stitch (i–j). Sew through the next three beads on the band (j–k).[8] Pick up a D and an A, and sew through the last C picked up in the previous stitch (k–l).

[9] Repeat steps 3–8 to the end of the band, ending with step 4 (l–m). Pick up a C, and sew back through the last 4mm round (m–n). Secure the thread with a few half-hitch knots (Basics) between beads, and trim. Remove the stop bead, and secure the begin-ning tail in the beadwork. Embellishment[1] Secure 1 yd. (.9m) of thread within the beadwork, and exit at figure 4, point a. Pick up four Cs, and sew through the next two Cs along the edge (a–b). Repeat (b–c) around the entire brace-let. To limit the embellishment to this outline, as in the cop-per bracelet (bottom, p. 96), secure the thread, and trim. [2] To add the picot edging,

as in the blue bracelet, p. 96, sew through the beadwork to exit at point d. Pick up a C and four Es, and sew back through the first E picked up (d–e). Pick up a C, and sew through the middle two Cs on the next set of four embel-lishment Cs (e–f). Repeat around the bracelet. Secure the thread, and trim.

ClaspDesign a toggle clasp of your own, or choose one of the following toggle bars and secure it with a bead loop.

Peyotetogglebar[1] On 1 yd. (.9m) of thread, attach a stop bead. Using Cs, work eight rows in flat, even-count peyote stitch (Basics) to make a strip that is ten

beads wide and has four beads along each flat edge. Zip up (Basics) the strip to form a bar. To add an accent bead at each end of the bar, continue on to step 2. Other-wise, remove the stop bead, secure the tails, and trim. [2] To add accent beads to the toggle bar, sew into the center of the bar, and exit one end (photo a).[3] Pick up a fire-polished bead and an 110, skip the 110, and sew back through the fire-polished bead and the bar (photo b). Repeat on the other end of the bar. Remove the stop bead, secure the tails, and trim.[4] Secure 1 ft. (30cm) of thread in the band, and exit at the center of one end. Pick up four 110s, sew diagonally through two center 110s on the bar, and sew back through the four 110s (photo c). Sew into the beadwork, retrace the thread path a few times, and secure the tail.

Bead-and-wire toggle bar[1] Secure 1 ft. (30cm) of thread in the beadwork, and exit at the center of one end of the bracelet. To make the toggle stem, pick up five 110s, skip the last 110, sew back through the first four 110s, and sew into the bead-work (photo d). Retrace the thread path a few times, secure the tail, and trim.[2] On 3 in. (7.6cm) of wire, string two 4mm rounds, the last 110 of the toggle stem, and two 4mm rounds (photo e).[3] Bend one end of the wire around the last 4mm, and wrap it around the wire between the last two beads (photo f). Trim. Repeat on the other end of the wire.

Clasp loop[1] Secure 1 ft. (30cm) of thread in the beadwork, and exit at the middle of the end opposite the toggle bar. [2] Pick up enough 110s to fit around the toggle bar, sew back through the first 110 picked up, and sew into the beadwork (photo g). Retrace the thread path a few times, secure the tail, and trim.

Narrow braceletFollow the instructions for side one of the wide bracelet, but alternate between three colors of fire-polished beads (colors A, B, and F) for the flower motifs. Embellish as in the wide bracelet, if desired, and add a clasp.

Editor’s NotE: You can substitute 60 seed beads for the 4mm round beads, as shown here. If you do, and you want your bracelet to lie flat, maintain a slightly loose tension or the beadwork will pucker.

Finish your bracelet with a peyote stitch toggle bar (copper band) or a bead-and-wire toggle bar (green band).
