SEAWATER LUBRICATED

BEARING TECHNOLOGY

Over fifty years ago, ship owners and managers made theconversion from seawater lubricated lignum vitae (a self

lubricating wood) to oil lubricated white metal stern tubebearings. Concern over the continued supply of quality lignum vitae,

and improvements in lip shaft sealing technology, facilitated thisdevelopment. As the majority of commercial ocean-going ships operatewith a propulsion system using a propeller shaft supported by oillubricated metal bearings with the oil contained in the stern tube by forwardand aft shaft seals, stern tube oil pollution has become a concern. Accordingto seal manufacturers, the seal must leak (aft-into the sea or forward-into theships bilge) at the shaft/seal interface in order for the seal to function properly. As well, simple fishing net or rope caught on a ships rotating shaft can alsodamage the aft seal allowing stern tube oil to flow out into the sea.

Using a proven, available technology, there is an alternative to an oil lubricatedsealed system that completely eliminates stern tube oil pollution and the risksassociated with it. A Thordon seawater lubricated COMPAC bearing system usesseawater as the lubrication medium in place of oil. The seawater is taken from thesea, pumped through COMPAC elastomeric polymer shaft bearings and returns tothe sea. No stern tube oil is needed.

STOP (STERN TUBE OIL POLLUTION)

During the last few decades, the pollution of the world’s oceans has become amatter of increasing international concerns. Zero tolerance for any kind of shipsource pollution is now becoming the norm and international regulations arebecoming more and more stringent.

Violations of international, national and local environment laws are resultingin numerous penalties - criminal (such as large fines or jail terms), civil andjudicial or administrative (such as loss of government contracts orpermits). These penalties can be applicable to any company or individualsuch as the master, the chief engineer, the owner, the operator, thecharterer of the ship and the Classification Society.

The safest way for today’s ship owners and managers to ensurethere is no risk of environmental violations is to completelyeliminate stern tube oil pollution by using COMPAC bearingslubricated with seawater. With over 30 years of bearingexperience using the proven principles of seawater

Thordon WaterQuality PackageA steady supply of seawater with thesignificant abrasives removed is animportant element in ensuring long, predictable, bearing wear life. With thisfactor in mind, Thordon has developeda self-contained supply, conditioningand monitoring package to ensure thatan adequate supply of clean water isconsistently being delivered to boththe forward seal and the bearings.

The Thordon Water Quality Package isdesigned to supply seawater to thestern tube bearings for lubrication andcooling at a minimum flow rate of0.15 litres/minute/mm (1 US gallon/

minute/inch) of shaft diameterand to condition seawaterfrom the water supply byremoving suspendedsolids greater than 50microns (0.002”) with aspecific gravity of 1.2 orhigher. Seawater is

sourced directly from theship’s sea bay, or alternately, from asuitable existing onboard supply.

A flow alarm is incorporated to alert theoperator to any low water flowcondition to the bearings. The ThordonWater Quality Package is designed tooperate on a stand-alone basis, or canbe fully integrated into the ship'scontrol and monitoring systems toallow operation in an unmannedmachinery space.

Shaft Liners

Since bearing “clearance” is the sum ofboth bearing wear, and wear of theshaft liner, a high quality shaft liner isan important component of a COMPACbearing system. Thordon Bearingsrecommends shaft liners made from agood quality centrifugally cast bronze, stainless steel or Inconel alloys. Weldclad Inconel or others acceptable toClassification Society Rules are alsopossible.

Thor-Coat Shaft CoatingIn a COMPAC seawater lubricatedbearing system, clean seawater is usedas the lubricant. Where the shaft isexposed to salt water, the shaft mustbe protected by a corrosion-resistantcoating.

Thor-Coat is a modified epoxy coatinghaving enhanced flexibility and nowoven fabric component. Thor-Coat isdesigned to provide 10 year or greaterintegrity – potentially eliminating theneed for the 5 year shaft withdrawaland inspection. Easily applied to athickness of 2mm, (0.079”) on theshaft, Thor-Coat is a one-coat product.

Forward SealThordon recommends a face seal or lipseal for use with the COMPAC seawaterlubricated stern tube bearing system.Thordon’s new Sea Thigor mechanicalface seal is a recommended option forshaft diameters up to 400mm (15.75”).A separate detailed brochure on theThordon Sea Thigor seal is available.

The Thordon COMPACStern Tube BearingSystem Includes:• COMPAC elastomeric polymer stern

tube bearings (with bearingcarriers when appropriate)

• Thordon Water Quality Package• Shaft liners• Thor-Coat shaft coating• Seawater lubricated forward seal

(Thordon can supply if requested)

COMPAC ElastomericPolymer SternTube BearingsThe bearing wear surface is ThordonCOMPAC, a non-metallic, elastomericpolymer alloy. To reduce start-upfriction and eliminate stick-slip,COMPAC’s formulation includesspecial lubricants to provide a lowcoefficient of friction. To promote early

formation of a hydrodynamic filmbetween the shaft and bearing, thelower (loaded) portion of the bearing issmooth, while the upper half of thebearing incorporates grooves for flowof the water lubricant/coolant.COMPAC bearings are approved by allmajor Classification Societies. The L/Dratio for COMPAC can be as low as 2:1for the bearing adjacent to thepropeller and 1:1 for all othersdepending upon the load and

operational requirements. If thebearings are to be aligned, and resinchocked into position, they should beinstalled in a metal carrier. A Thordontapered keyset can be provided toallow the bearing to be removed forinspection or replacement withoutremoving the shaft. The COMPACbearing is split and the key iscomprised of two parts sliding on ataper – a fixed section and a removablesliding section.

Simple Design forNewbuilds andConversionsThe COMPAC system was developedfrom improvements in non-metallicmaterials and bearing designcombined with the proven principles ofwater lubrication technology and thathas existed since the earliest days ofshaft driven propellers. The seawateris sourced from the ship’s sea bay, pumped to the forward section of thestern tube just aft of the seal, throughthe forward and then aft bearings, andreturns to the sea.

IncreasedTolerance ToMisalignment& Edge LoadingAs a Thordon COMPACbearing is 50 timesmore elastic than whitemetal and 3 times morecompliant than othercommon non-metallicpropeller shaft bearings,COMPAC deflects slightlyunder edge loading. The load is spread, andthe localized pressure on the bearing is reduced, eliminating the bearing wipingthat often occurs under these conditions.

Survivability

If a serious bearing failure occurs witha white metal or reinforced plasticbearing, significant heat is oftenproduced and there can be damage tothe shaft as well as the bearing. As theThordon COMPAC polymer softens at alower temperature than metallic orother non-metallic bearing materials, excessive amounts of heat are notproduced in failure mode and shaftdamage is avoided.
