1.1 Overview of variants

Festo assists you in solving your automation tasks at machinelevel with CPA valve terminals. The modular structure of theCPA valve terminal for the CP system enables you to use theCPA valve terminals optimally in your machine or system.

Due to its compact structure the CPA valve terminal can bemounted close to the actuators to be actuated. This meansthat short air supply lines can be used. System losses willtherefore be minimized and the times required forpressurizing and exhausting the compressed air tubing willbe reduced. This is made possible by the use of very compactvalves with sufficient flow, thereby helping to reduce costs.

CPA valve terminal with CPX terminal

This CPA valve terminal is available with 2 to max. 22 single−coil valve positions or up to max. 11 double−coil valvepositions. A maximum of 22 solenoid coils can be actuated.

3.1 Compressed air preparation

CautionDirty or incorrectly lubricated compressed air will reducethe service life of the valve terminal.

3.1.1 Operation with unlubricated compressed air

CautionToo much residual oil content in the compressed air willreduce the service life of the valve terminal.

If bio−oils are used (oils with synthetic ester or true esterbasis, e.g. rape oil methylester) the residual oil contentmust not exceed 0.1 mg/m3 (see ISO 8573−1 class 2).

If mineral oils are used (e.g. HLP oils as per DIN51524parts 1 to 3) or corresponding oils on a polyalphaolefinebasis (PAO), the residual oil content must not exceed5mg/m3 (see ISO 8573−1 class 4).

This avoids operative malfunction of the valves.

Excessive residual oil cannot be permitted irrespective of thecompressor oil, as otherwise the basic lubrication will bewashed out during the course of time.

3.1.2 Operation with lubricated compressed air

Operate system equipment with unlubricated compressed airif possible. This will prevent pollution of the environment.Festo pneumatic valves and actuators have been designed sothat, if used as intended, they will not require additionallubrication and will still achieve a long service life.

CautionOperation with lubricated compressed air will cause thelife−time lubrication, which is necessary for unlubricatedoperation, to be washed out".

Note the following instructions if lubricated compressed airmust be used. The compressed air prepared with the compressor mustcorrespond in quality to unlubricated compressed air. If possible, do not operate all of your equipment withlubricated compressed air. The lubricators should, wherepossible, always be installed directly upstream of theactuator used.

CautionIncorrect additional oil and too much residual oil content inthe compressed air will reduce the service life of the valveterminal.

Use the special oil OFSW−32 from Festo or the alternativeoils listed in the Festo catalogue (corresponding toDIN51524−HLP32, basic viscosity 32CST at 40 °C).

The additional lubrication must not exceed 25 mg/m3

(ISO 8573−1 class 5).

Make sure that the lubricator setting is correct (see following section).

This avoids operative malfunction of the valves.

Setting the lubricator: With the machine running (typical operating status) 0.2 tomax. 1 drops/min. or 0.5 to 5 drops/1000 l air.

Checking the setting: The procedure described below can be used for checking thesetting of the lubricator.

Proceed as follows:

· Check the service units in respect of condensate andlubricator setting twice a week.

1. Ascertain the actuator which is furthest from thelubricator.

2. Ascertain the valve terminal which controls this cylinder.

3. Remove the silencer, if fitted, from port (3/5).

4. Hold a piece of white cardboard 10 cm in front of theexhaust port.

5. Let the system run for a short period.

There must be only a slight yellow colouring on thecardboard. If oil droplets appear, this is an indicationthat too much oil has been used.

Another indicator of over−lubrication is the coloration or thecondition of the exhaust air silencer. A distinctly yellowcolouring of the filter element or drops of oil on the silencerindicate that the lubricator setting is too high.

3.4 Connecting the CPA valve terminal

In the case of sub−bases fitted with blanking plates, seal theworking lines (2) and (4) with blanking plugs or blankingplugs to prevent dirt from entering.

In order to guarantee the optimum efficiency of your CPAvalve terminal, we recommend in the following cases that youconnect the compressed air tubing and, if necessary, also theexhaust air tubing on both sides:

when large volume cylinders are operated at high speeds

when several valves are switched simultaneously to theflow position.

3.4.1 Pilot air supply

Caution If possible, operate the CPA valve terminal withnon−lubricated pilot air (connections 12/14). Otherwise observe the instructions in the section 3.1.2.

With CPA valve terminals with internally branched pilotair supply, the above mentioned instruction also appliesto the supply air (port (1)).

With CPA valve terminals with two pressure zones andinternally branched pilot air:

Due to the internally branched pilot air supply in theright end plate, the pressure in the right−hand pressurezone must be 3 ... 8 bar.

Pilot control of the valve solenoid coils can be undertakenwith internal or external pilot air, depending on the right endplate. You can ascertain the pilot control variant for whichyour CPA valve terminal is equipped by the type designationon the right end plate (see table).

4.1 General Information

4.1.1 Before commissioning

· Switch off the power supply before connecting ordisconnecting plugs (otherwise this could lead tofunctional damage).

· Only commission a valve terminal that has been mountedand wired completely.

· Make sure that there is a sufficient supply of fresh air(cooling) for the following operating conditions: when the maximum number of valves are fitted when the maximum operating voltage is applied when the solenoid coil is constantly under stress.

· Please observe the following instructions on building uppressure in the overall supply.

4.1.2 Pressure increase in the overall supply

WarningIf the pressure build−up of the pilot air supply is too slowor delayed, this may cause the actuators to performsudden unexpected movements under the followingconditions:

when the compressed air is connected via a soft−startvalve (gradual pressure build−up) and

if there are electric signals (e.g. after EMERGENCYSTOP).

This can cause damage to the machine or system and eveninjury to persons.

· Operate the valve terminal with an external pilot airsupply (3 ... 8 bar) Branch the pilot air supply in front ofthe soft−start valve (see diagram).

Page 79: Compact performance - Festo · see leaflet with product ... −IFB−ASI or CPA ... CP Compact Performance CP cable Special cable for connecting the different CP modules

4. Commissioning

4−5Festo P.BE−CPA−EN en 0903e

The pilot air supply must reach a pressure of 3 ... 8 barimmediately after it is switched on. Otherwise it is notensured that the valve will switch directly (see diagram). If the pressure is less than 3 bar, there may be a delay beforethe valve is switched, in spite of an electric signal beingpresent. The gradual pressure build−up of the overall supplydoes not affect the actuator in that case. The actuator wouldreact suddenly (e.g. a cylinder would extend or retractsuddenly, depending on the valve function).

4.2 Manual override (MO)

You should use the manual override especially whencommissioning the pneumatic system, in order to check thefunction and operation of the valve or the valve−actuatorcombination.

By actuating the manual override, you can switch the valvewithout an electric signal. You only need to switch on thecompressed air supply.

The manual override has been designed to be used asfollows:

Manual override design Mode of operation

Manual overridenon−detenting

After actuation the manual overrideis reset automatically by a spring

Manual override detenting The manual override remainsactuated until it is reset by hand

WarningBefore actuating the MO:

Uncontrolled actuation of solenoid coils can cause theactuators to perform sudden unexpected movementswhich may cause personal injury and material damage.

· Disconnect the power supply for the solenoid coils fromthe relevant connections on the CPA valve terminal.

You will thereby avoid undesired actuation of the solenoidcoils.

Before applying the operating voltage:

During commissioning, manual override actuations whichare in the switched state can cause actuators to performsudden unexpected movements. These movements cancause injury to human beings and damage to property.

· Make sure that all manual override actuations are resetto their normal positions.

You will thereby avoid undefined switching states of thevalves.

Proceed as follows:

WarningBefore testing the valve−actuator combination:

make sure that nobody is in the danger zone.

NoteA valve that has been switched by an electric signal cannotbe reset by the manual override. The electric signal isdominant in this case.

· Reset the electric signal before actuating the manualoverride.

1. Switch on the compressed air supply.

2. Check the functioning and operation of each individualvalve−actuator combination by actuating the manualoverride as shown in the following diagrams.

NoteIncorrect actuation of the non−detenting manual overridecan lead to malfunctioning or damage to the manualoverride.

· Use a blunt pencil for actuating the non−detentingmanual override.

· Actuate the manual override only with max 30 N.

3. In the case of the CPA valve terminal with detentingmanual override: After testing the valves, make sure thatall manual overrides are in their normal positions again.

CautionDuring commissioning, manual overrides that are in theswitched state can cause actuators to perform suddenunexpected movements. These movements can causeinjury to persons and damage to property. If the manualoverride is in the actuated state, it is not possible to resetthe valve to its neutral position with an electric signal. The manual override is dominant in this case.

· Make sure that double−solenoid valves (Ident. code J)are reset to their normal positions. Actuate here manualoverride 12 of the relevant valve or apply current to pilotsolenoid coil 12.

· Reset the detenting manual override actuations to theirnormal positions again. The valve sub−bases with Ident.code H, K and N are each fitted with two valves. Withmanual override 14 you control the valve on controlside14; with manual override 12 you control the valveon control side 12 (see switching symbols of the valvesub−bases appendix B).

In this way, you can avoid undefined switching states whencommissioning the machine/system.

5.5 Conversion work on the CPA valve terminal

The following conversion work can be undertaken on the CPAvalve terminal:

Conversion to detenting or non−detenting manual overrideon CPA valve terminals with MP, CP, AS−Interfaceconnection or CPX terminal

Conversion of the valve terminal to internal or externalpilot air supply

Conversion of the CPA valve terminal to different pressurezones

Conversion of valve positions for actuating one or twovalve solenoid coils

5.5.1 Conversion from non−detenting to detenting/non−detentingmanualoverride

CPA valve terminals with MP, CP or AS−Interface connectioncan be converted from non−detenting to non−detenting/detenting manual override if the safety clip is removed.

The manual override actuations on CPA valve terminals withIC connection can be operated either in non−detenting ordetenting mode. Conversion is not necessary.

Proceed as follows:

If you wish to re−use the safety clip:

· Use a thin object (e.g. a spatula) to lift the safety clip outof the fixture (Fig.5/9, 1).

If you do not wish to re−use the safety clip:

· Use a screwdriver to press in the centre on the safety clip(Fig.5/9, 2). The safety clip will then bend and snap outof the support.
