Where Should I Go

When comparing two great schools like UNC-Wilmington and UNC- Charlotte one must ignore their glaring differences and look deeper into the two schools rich cultures. But first one needs to look at their differences to see their similarities. UNC- Wilmington is in a small beach town on the coast of North Carolina with a laid back more tranquil setting, and UNC- Charlotte is in an extremely big Urban hub with the hustle and bustle that comes along with a big city. On top of the sheer difference in size of the city that they are both located in, UNC-Charlotte has more than double the amount of undergraduates as UNC-Wilmington to just add to the sheer size difference. Other glaring differences include the amount of students who live on campus, the weather, and the acceptance rate. But once digging down deeper into the two schools they have many key similarities to entice an incoming business major such as myself. To start they are both public schools with very good business departments, similar class size, and big social scenes.

Most UNC- schools in the system of seventeen offer business majors, but many sideline their business schools for other departments. Both UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Wilmington treat their business schools as one of their top programs of interest. UNC-Charlottes school of business is The Belk College of Business which is ranked in the top five in the state and UNC-Wilmingtons school of business, Cameron School of Business is ranked in the top five as well allowing the two schools to entice students from all over the region to come to their schools. When looking for a school to go to as a business major its very important to try and get into one that has a good business department because of the sheer number of business majors all across the country that will one day be competing for the same jobs.

Class size is another key similarity when considering a school of choice. UNC-Charlottes average class size is thirty five students per class with a nineteen to one student to faculty ratio, UNC- Wilmingtons average class size is thirty three with a student to faculty ration of seventeen to one placing them almost parallel in class size. For freshman or transfer students who may not be used to big class size or the freedom of not having tabs kept on your every move a smaller choice class size is key. With bigger schools having average class sizes ranging up to fifty or fifty-five some students drop off in attendance and become a name on a sheet of paper, or just simply dont get the help they need to learn. So the class size similarities at UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Wilmington are very important for the academic success and work place preparation of their students.

The last major similarity in the two schools is their big social scenes, because lets be honest everyone wants to have at least a little fun in college. Both UNC-Charlotte and UNC- Wilmington have Division I sports teams with over twenty men and women sports that attract students from all corners of the school to come out and support. Both schools are very involved in Greek life offering both sororities and fraternities along with a Greek village. Greek life to some is a major contributing factor to their decion on a final school to attend. As Greek life bonds together portions of the student body and offers an immediate opportunity to become socially active at the school. Lastly they both have a roaring nightlife outside of the school that attracts many students out at night. Charlotte home to UNCC offers a great uptown scene that includes bars, restaurants, hookah bars, and even some good clubs that host college nights weekly. Wilmington home to UNCW offers a great beach attraction lined with bars, live bands, and of course great sea food restaurants that draw students off campus. Both Schools offer these great social opportunities that are very important to the whole college experience.

At first look UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Wilmington might seem to be very different schools to many with their various differences. With glaring differences such as their huge size difference, acceptance rate, on campus living, and weather , many over look these two schools as being comparable. But once digging down deeper into the two schools they have many key similarities to entice incoming business majors such as myself. With parallel business departments, class size, and social scenes, these two colleges who at first may seem to be quite different become a lot more similar.
