02. | Double Stone Steel China

Double Stone Steel was founded by Mr Yuan Yi Zhu. Mr Zhu first studied PVD technology in 1991, at the Beijing Institute of Technology. He then worked in the industrial PVD coatings sector where he further improved his knowledge of PVD.

Financed by his family, the first Double Stone Steel factory was opened in in 1994 in Panyu, Guangzhou - China. Mr Zhu wanted to specifically target the decorative/architectural metals sector and developed larger machines and different PVD colours to fulfill the needs of the industry.

The business has continued to grow over the past 20 years and now there are over 10 manufacturing facilities throughout China and they have over 60 different types of machines and more than 5000 workers. Their annual turnover (processing only) is $20 million.

03. | Double Stone Steel International

In 2012, Double Stone China created Double Stone Steel in Hong Kong, with Richard Adam and April Dahlberg, as shareholders, with the specific intention to open factories in Europe and the USA with locally-based partners.

Mr Henry Zhu, nephew to Mr Yuan Yi Zhu, oversees the day to day business of Double Stone Steel. Mr Henry Zhu was educated in Australia, has a Master’s Degree in Logistics from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and over 15 years experience in PVD.

John Desmond have achieved the standards set out for the Achilles Building Confidence Pre-Qualification audit for the construction industry.

Meeting all the requirements set out by the Achilles Building Confidence Accreditation means that John Desmond Ltd automatically qualify to tender for any work requiring a PQQ (Pre-Qualification Questionnaire) within the construction industry.

John Desmond Ltd is a designer, fabricator and installer of specialist architectural metalwork. We work on projects where exceptionally high standards of architectural detailing are critical and are proud to have successfully developed working relationships with architects, designers and contractors over our 46 years of trading.

06. | Double Stone Steel Europe

In 2014 JDL and DSS, decided to combine forces and DSS Europe was set up. JDL purchased 48 Weir Rd, in near proximity to their current site, and the process is underway to build a 30000 square foot factory, (currently undergoing planning) to accommodate full manufacturing facilities by the end of 2016.

The factory will initially install two flat-sheet machines, 2 profile machines and a small component machine for architectural hardware.

Embassy Gardens – Vauxhall316SS Bead blasted Bronze PVD coating for exterior landscaping

Client: Ballymore Homes.

The Embassy Gardens development stands in the heart of the Nine Elms on the Southbank regeneration area and comprises 2000 luxury homes, workspaces and amenities. The site is adjacent to the new US and Dutch Embassies. The linear park will run through Nine Elms from Vauxhall to Battersea Power Station.

08. | Double Stone Steel / Kloeckner Metals (USA)

Kloeckner Metals has signed an exclusive distributorship agreement with Double Stone Steel for the marketing of PVD (physical vapor deposition) coated Stainless Steel. Under this agreement, Kloeckner will also exclusively market related fabrication services, along with Stainless Mesh.

Klöckner & Co is the largest producer-independent distributor of steel and metal products and one of the leading steel service center companies in the European and American markets combined. The core business of the Klöckner & Co Group is the warehousing and distribution of steel and non-ferrous metals as well as the operation of steel service centers. More than 130,000 active customers are supplied through around 230 distribution and service locations by 10,000 employees in more than 15 countries.

Our objective is to have manufacturing facilities in the USA by end 2017.

09. | PVD Sheet Machine

The size of the machine is 3200mm diameter and 2000mm height and is front loading. This machine uses 24 ion sources and the target sizes are Dia 100*40mm size targets.

To achieve a PVD copper colour these 24 targets consists of half pure titanium and half Titanium and Aluminium combinations (80% titanium and 20% aluminium in density ratio).

We will use cathodic Multiple Arcs PVD technology for coloring.

11. | PVD ± Process (Vacuum Pressure Conditions)

01. Cleaning StepWe will operate some of the titanium targets and produce plasma through inputting Argon gas for cleaning the stainless steel surface under a 400 voltage Bias condition over one minute.

02. Adhesion StepWe will continue to input Argon gas and operate all 24 targets including pure titanium and titanium-aluminium alloy targets for producing intermediate layer under 100 voltage Bias condition 60-80 seconds.

The objective of a pure metal intermediate layer is to increase the adhesion.

03. Colouring StepContinuing operating 24 targets, and inputting reactive gas--Nitrogen for producing TiN, AlN, TiAlN compounds layer at 400-500HV respectively. (Argon gas is not used during phase 3)

* The base vacuum degree is about 1.5 x 10-2 pa, the coloring vaccum degree is 2.0 x 10-1 pa.

12. | Quality Control ± Colouring Process

Sheets will be processed through one machine and will be coloured by p/o batches to maintain colour consistency within the groups.

We can ensure that 1300mm on the overall 1500mm width is consistent with minor colour differences of 100mm on the edges. No problem on lengths.

We intend on dedicating one machine running 24/7 until the entire order is processed.

Other machines are available at this factory and at our other facilities within the Guangzhou area.

Visual Inspection from control sample to sheet – A control panel of samples varying in colour for the visual (fail/approved) QC procedure.

Using the portable spectrophotometer machine to control colour consistency through data management. We will achieve LAB data from the control sample, then scan the finished sheets to get another data for comparison.

Max colour deviation will be set before starting the production process, based on a approved colour range (result of minimum 4 different batch of PVD application).

Based on the approved colour range we will set a LAB range.

The material and mirror level will influence L data.

Further tests to be carried out to the PISA TEST Protocol request from this new samples.

During the production, we will do random checks throughout the fabrication process on material thickness . These certificates will be issued correspondingly and we will identify the batch numbers.

The Sulphur target is extremely low and would be only possible with a dedicated full heat production, 120 tonnes - with additional mill costs on the full quantity. In discussion with one of our engineers it's not an order we would accept at this time as we are operating at near full capacity for this grade.
