CHUCK HOBERMANNowhere do the disciplines of art, architecture, and engineering fuse as seamlessly as in the work of inventor Chuck Hoberman, internationally known for his “transform-able structures.” Through his products, patents, and structures, Hoberman demon-strates how objects can be foldable, retractable, or shape-shifting. Such capabili-ties lead to functional benefits: portability, instantaneous opening, and intelligent responsiveness to the built environment.

Hoberman is the founder of Hoberman Associates, a multidisciplinary practice with clients ranging across sectors including consumer products, deployable shelters, and space structures. Examples of his commissioned work include the transforming LED screen that served as the primary stage element for the U2 360° world tour and the Hoberman Arch in Salt Lake City, installed as the centerpiece for the Winter Olympic Games (2002). Other noteworthy commissions include a retractable dome for the

World’s Fair in Hanover, Germany (2000); the Expanding Hypar (1997) at the Cali-fornia Museum of Science and Industry; the Expanding Sphere (1992) at the Liberty Science Center, Jersey City, New Jersey; and the Expanding Geodesic Dome (1997) at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Hoberman’s work has been exhibited several times at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2008 his commissioned installation Emergent Surface was part of the exhibit “Design and the Elastic Mind.”

In 2008, alongside Buro Happold Principal Craig Schwitter, Hoberman formed the Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI). The joint venture united Hoberman’s design vi-sion with Buro Happold’s 30 years of engineering excellence to develop retractable façades, responsive shading and ventilation, operable roofs, and canopies for the built environment.

Between 2009 and 2010, ABI realized four adaptive architectural installations: an adaptive façade for the POLA’s Ginza, Tokyo headquarters; an operable roof for Aldar Central Market in Abu Dhabi; a dynamic entrance for the Wyss Institute at Harvard University; and a kinetic façade for the Simons Center at Stony Brook University, New York.

Hoberman holds a bachelor’s degree in sculpture from Cooper Union and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University. He won the Chrysler Award for Innovation and Design in 1997. Hoberman is a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.

ADAPTIVE ARCHITECTURE: 2006 - 2012In recent years, Hoberman has been intensely engaged with how transform-able strategies can help achieve sustainable goals within architecture. We en-vision adaptive buildings and building components that intelligently respond to changes in the environment, self-optimizing their configuration to improve energy performance and increase occupant comfort.

In 2008, Hoberman Associates co-founded the Adaptive Building Initiative in partnership with international engineering firm Buro Happold. Working with architectural firms in America, Europe and Asia, Hoberman is creating responsive shading and ventilation surfaces, operable roofs and canopies, and retractable facades for multi-use spaces. Our role is concurrently creative and technical, and our work is justified by its performance, including environmen-tal impact, architectural integration and visitor experience.

Our recentinventive activity has centered on a series of patented mechanisms for adaptive surfaces that modulate their opacity, permeability and physical dimensions. These efforts have culminated in a suite of Intelligent Surfaces: modular, unitized, customizable systems for adaptive facades.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT: 2002 - 2012The inherent spectacle embodied in Hoberman’s work has been recognized by stage designers for its theatrical qualities. While creative explorations in live entertainment overlap our purely sculptural work, the theatrical context has allowed the integration of the transformable experience within other show elements, including lighting, media, music and dance.

In 2001 Hoberman Associates was commissioned by the organizing committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City to produce a large-scale structural transforming curtain as part of the nightly Medals ceremony. The opening of the curtain occurred at the penultimate moment of the ceremony, mesmerizing a live audience of 20,000 people, and broadcast to millions more across the world.

Work in this area culminated in Hoberman’s largest structure to date, the expanding video screen for the ongoing U2 360 tour. In this case, a giant expanding structure has been clad in hundreds of high resolution video screens, marrying the process of physical transformation with a vast media display.

KINETIC SCULPTURE: 1991 - 2012Chuck Hoberman originally trained as a sculptor at Cooper Union in New York City in the late 70s. While there, he created a series of kinetic sculptures that could be ridden on, thereby changing the viewer’s physical position and ori-entation. Fascinated with the creative potential of technology he took up engi-neering studies at Columbia University, graduating in 1985. He then worked for a startup robotics company through the remainder of the 80s, designing automation systems for government and industry.

Since founding Hoberman Associates in 1990, he has received a series of commissions for public artworks: large kinetic structures installed in museums, corporate and commercial spaces around the world. Expanding and contracting under programmable control, these site-specific pieces engage architectural space and create an ongoing performance for visitors.

Two of Hoberman’s major installations were commissioned in 1994 and 2008 by The Museum of Modern Art, which has also acquired several Hoberman pieces for their permanent collection. Hoberman exhibitions have included the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1997, the POLA Museum annex in Tokyo in 2010, and the Building Centre in London in 2011.
