FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dogfight begins on the eve of JFK’s assassination. It was a time in our history filled with expectation, arrogance, and entitlement. What many thought would be a simple military engagement turned into two decades of conflict with over 58,000 american soldiers killed.

This is the backdrop for our story. It is one that is eerily familiar, and not very pretty. Dogfight takes an unflinching look at how people — as individuals or groups — can be horribly cruel to each other. Yet this story is not about seeking forgiveness or justification for this cruelty. Nor is it about exposing the practice of dogfights (commonplace in the 60s). Rather, it is about a spark of hope and generosity in the midst of ugliness. It is about finding love and comfort in the most unexpected places. At a time when dehumanization was routine and deemed necessary for military purposes, Dogfight is about finding the beauty of the individual, regardless of any element that may make them appear “ugly.”

If you enjoy this production, we invite you to become a season Member or make a donation to our company. Your generous support and loyal patronage is what allows BoHo to continue its rich history of telling stories that examine the pillars of truth, beauty, freedom and love in our everyday lives and relationships.

For now… welcome to Dogfight!

FUGITIVE SONGSMUSIC BY CHRIS MILLER AND LYRICS BY NATHAN TYSEN

February 11 – March 13, 2016at the Heartland Studio

Fugitive Songs is an innovative song cycle focusing on everyday people on the run: a disgruntled Subway sandwich employee, a jilted ex-cheerleader, a pair of Patty Hearst fanatics, a stoner forced to rob a conve-nience store against his will, and many others. The writing team of Miller and Tysen blend traditional folk music with contemporary pop and gospel to create a moving portrait of restlessness in America. While many of BoHo’s shows have focused on the reasons people come together, this production instead looks at why people choose to run away from the relationships in their lives.

May 25 – June 26, 2016at the Heartland Studio

When the ailing Professor Serebryakov retires to the country with his new, beautiful, younger wife Yelena after a lifetime of posh metropolitan living, it throws his entire estate into turmoil. The estate originally belonged to Serebryakov’s first wife, and her mother, daughter, and brother still live there. Soon passions are flaring, with several of the gentlemen declaring their love for Yelena and Professor Serebryakov announc-ing his intention to sell off the estate. For as much as the family has lamented the stagnation of their lives, the introduction of change is even more frightening to them.

UNCLE VANYABY ANTON CHEKHOV, IN A NEW ADAPTATION BY ANNIE BAKER

NEXT TO NORMALBOOK AND LYRICS BY BRIAN YORKEY, MUSIC BY TOM KITT

Fall 2016 at Theater Wit

In this Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, the Goodmans seem to be an normal, average suburban American family. Dan is an architect; Diana rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens. And yet their lives are anything but normal. Diana has been struggling with bipolar disorder and hallucinations for 16 years, and the strain of keeping this locked up within the family threatens to tear them apart. The harder the family tries to be “normal”—including medication and a variety of therapies—the farther they move from being true to themselves.

At Theater WitWe are a theater company within a building, within a community, within a world.

As a production company, Theater Wit’s mission is to be the premier “smart art” theater

in Chicago by producing humorous, challenging, and intelligent plays that speak with

a contemporary theatrical voice.

As an institution, Theater Wit seeks to be the hub of the Chicago neighborhood

theater scene. In our three spaces, we bring together Chicago’s best storefront theater

companies. Here you will find a smorgasbord of excellent productions, see the work of

a parade of talented artists, and mingle with audiences from all over Chicago.

In the Middle of a CommunityEveryone here: folks in the audience… the person who handed you this program…

somewhere on or off the stage there are actors… if you look up in the corner you might

get a glimpse of the stage manager in the booth… We’re all in this room for the same

reason: to be a part of this shared experience. No matter who they are or where they

come from; no matter if they are complete strangers or familiar faces; no matter how

different the age, the race, or the walk of life; after this performance, you will have

something in common. So, strike up a conversation in the lobby, introduce yourself to

someone new. Meet our staff, shake hands with an actor, get a drink from our bar. We’re

all in this together.

Part of the Chicago SceneTheater is part of the Chicago experience. Each year, over 200 theaters present thousands

of shows to Chicago’s loyal and enthusiastic theater-going audience. Chicago’s theater

community is recognized around the world for its talent, its innovation and its power to

entertain and enlighten. If Tony awards were sports championships, our artists would

beat out the combined efforts of Michael Jordan, Bobby Hull, Jim McMahon, Jermaine

Dye, and the entire Chicago Cubs roster going back 100 years. This stage is a Chicago

stage, contributing to the vibrant artistic life of our city and the economic development

of our neighborhood. Very few cities on the planet offer the theatrical richness and

diversity of Chicago. But you get to share in it. Because you are here.
