The year was 1994. Nearly 20 million South Africans had just chosen Nelson Mandela as their first democratically elected president. There was a sense of optimism in the air as the new South Africa was born.

It was in this hopeful atmosphere that Flight Centre opened its first South African store in Eastgate. From the start, it was clear this was something special. No travel agent in the country had done what we were doing – offering discounts, giving quotes on the spot, and blowing customers away.

Within two years, Flight Centre SA had 10 stores, and was breaking even. When Nelson Mandela left office in 1999, we were posting healthy profits of R9 million.

The future was bright, but no-one could have predicted just how successful Flight Centre would become in the new millennium. Not only were we posting record profits, we were living

up to Mandela’s legacy through social development programmes and non-profit organisations.

Even the turmoil of the global financial meltdown couldn’t slow Flight Centre’s growth down. The next 10 years saw us make inroads into corporate travel and establish ourselves as an employer of choice.

More than 25 years after SA’s historic elections, Flight Centre Travel Group is flying higher than ever. We’re one of the largest travel companies in South Africa with a TTV of over R7,2 billion and a footprint of 159 retail, corporate and wholesale teams.

As we head into the next decade, we will continue to follow in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela – growing our business and people as we embrace the future to become Middle East Africa’s Greatest Travel and Technology Experience Company by 2025.

In 2025 FCTG will be a thriving global travel company with a distinctive, entrepreneurial culture, famous brands, and winning models. We will amaze our customers across THREE core segments – corporate, leisure and at destination.
