Renaissance Characteristics Michelangelo was a painter, sculptor, poet and architect. ("Mongol Elements in Western Medieval Art") He expressed a lot of renaissance characteristics in his work such as, painting nature, nudity and expressing human emotion. The fact that he had been talented in more than one field meant that he was a renaissance man. Michelangelo was also a humanist. ("Short Biography of Michelangelo) He was more drawn to people with softer emotions and he was compelled to embrace his talents and allow himself to focus on human nature and the influence of religion that seemed to impact everyone. He was also apart of the Medici family. However he did not take part in their banking business. 3

Renaissance Characteristics reflected in Art An example is reflected onto this sculpture of David. Even though it is a religious sculpture it portrayed in a humanistic way. Michelangelo wanted to demonstrate the transition between childhood and adulthood (puberty). The sculpture expresses strength, confidence and curiosity. Those three characteristics were not seen in the medieval time because they were not encouraged. Renaissance Characteristics Holbein was also a renaissance man, he made; prints, murals, stained glass and pen and ink illustrations. His main focus was on portraits of people. This differentiates the renaissance art and the medieval art because Holbein took the time to paint people more than he painted religious inspired paintings. Renaissance Characteristics reflected in Art Holbein was drawn to new and fresh ideas so he was very welcoming of the transition between medieval art and the renaissance art. He also realized that religious art had become less popular in the market. ("Christina of Denmark - Hans Holbein the Younger - WikiArt.org). He focused on making the person he was painting appear as real as possible. On the canvas he wanted to show human emotion as much as possible. 7

Differences Between Both Artists: Michelangelo made a lot of sculptures and murals he was more of a humanist than Holbein, of course that might be because he was around humanist since it was more popular in Italy than it was in Germany since the whole concept was new at the time. ("Christina of Denmark) Holbein focused more on neutralism and realism, he wanted to paint portraits of people, even though that was not very popular at the time. He was moving away from religious paintings and focused more on humans. 9

Similarities Between Both Artists Both Holbein and Michelangelo had renaissance interpretations in their work (Nudity, Nature, Religion and Classic Stories of Rome and Greece) Both artists wanted to convey human emotion rather than just paint typical religious paintings/sculptures. Michelangelo and Holbein were both talented in different aspects of art and they both valued change and knowledge. 10

Middle Ages Vs. The Renaissance There is definitely a strong connection between religion. The Renaissance art seems to embrace and connect religion to humans more. Furthermore, the Middle Age art focuses more on the seriousness of religion. It is more of an obsession than an adoration. The art during that time was strict and there was no liberty given to artist. Also in the middle ages the people were more narrow minded, they were simplistic characters who lived and died worshiping religion. Unlike the Renaissance period, where there was a sense of freedom given to the people.

Evidence of New Birth I have discovered a gradual between the Medieval Ages and the Renaissance by looking at the politics, art and the ideals that people had. From a political aspect, The different city states, Venice, Mulan, Florence,Pisa, Genoa had become very powerful by being competitive with one another, bettering their economy and thickening their culture allowed them to step away from the natural law and move into a positive law with rules that men created for the society instead of following god. 13

In terms of ideology, humanist became more and more popular, suddenly humans began to care about education and become curious with the human condition. It became a generation of upgrading and becoming better. Lastly, there was also a change in the art that was being made, because it was only focused on religion but as humans began to gain more knowledge they began to want to paint/sculpt other things around them instead of just fixating on religion. This slowly allowed them to become less narrow minded. 14
