Epistemic Modality indicates the manner in which the meaning of a

clause is qualified as to reflect the speakers judgment of the likelihood of

the proposition it expresses being true. Randolf Quirk at al.

Epistemic Modality is the speakers assessment of probability and

predictability. It is external to the content, being a part of the attitude

taken up by the speaker: his attitude in this case, towards his own speech

    role as declarer. Halliday

Epistemic Modality indicates the status of the proposition in terms of the

    speakers commitment to it. Palmer

Epistemic Modality indicates the speakers or the conceptualizers

assessment of the situation defining its epistemic status. The epistemic

status of an event is related to the speakers knowledge of what he or she

conceives as real or potential or experiences as such. Ronald Langacker

There was no sign of Yasmin in the corridor. I had told her I

would be sitting in my rooms at Trinity throughout the

operation, so she wasprobablymaking her way there now.

Must be one hell of a lab, Langdon thought.

    .

The camera isnt here, the voice said. I can see where it

was mounted, though. Somebody must have removedit.

    . . .

Not the specimen, Langdon countered. The technology.

Antimatter technology must beworth a mint.

No. The Illuminati may have believed in the abolition ofChristianity, but they wielded their power through political and

financial means, not through terrorists acts.

The church may not be burning scientists at the stakeanymore, but if you think theyve released their reign over

science, ask yourself why half the schools in your country are

    not allowed to teach evolution.

The sea looked farther now than Langdon had imagined. Moreover, the concentration of lights at the coast was a

stark reminder that even far out at sea an explosion mighthave devastating effects.

The killer wondered how Janus could possibly handle such a

staggering task. The man obviously had connections on theinside. The brotherhoods dominion seemed limitless.

Vittoria sounded only slightly more hopeful. I supposeGalileo could have created some sort of mathematical codethat went unnoticed by the clergy.
