)ary Lamb compares an en!io"s person to that of a rose tree,
s"ggesting that a rose anting to be like a different floer o"ld
be blind to its on bea"ty#
*f the rose ished to change its +nat"ral bent+ and gro other
floers, it o"ld be "nable to do so# he pict"res the rose
orrying, and says if it co"ld only appreciate its on red floer
and smell its bea"tif"l scent, it o"ld ne!er be "nhappy again#
This comparison is "sed to s"ggest that, if e too co"ld only
appreciate o"r on strengths, talents and bea"ty, e o"ld
ha!e no need to be ealo"s of others#

.%n!y/ is a grand metaphor comparing the floer that cannot see its
bea"ty to the people in the orld ho cannot see their talents# Lamb
"ses a rhyme scheme and a choice of ords that con!ey a gentle
and bea"tif"l feeling to the reader hen they are read alo"d# The
title .en!y/ brings images of ealo"sy and of green en!y to the mindand not ones of delicate roses, b"t this is here Lamb did e!erything
right# he "sed the rose, the most bea"tif"l of floers, to con!ey her
message that being en!io"s is a aste of time# 0ed roses signify
lo!e, poer, passion and co"rage# By "sing this floer Lamb is
trying to make the statement that people sho"ld not be en!io"s, they
are rare floers and ha!e lo!e poer, and passion ithin them#
Lamb effecti!ely "ses different ords to con!ey this o!erall message
thro"gho"t the poem#

Oen as able to e5press ho he felt abo"t those ho passed
aay hile fighting in the ar, and he s"ccessf"lly
comm"nicates a mo!ing message to his readers thro"gh the
o5ymoron, .$oomed (o"th,/ beca"se the a"thor s"ggests that
the soldiers ill die before they e!en begin to fight#
By "sing a sonnet for the str"ct"re of his poem, Oen
immediately introd"ces a to"ch of irony, beca"se the
con!entional f"nction of the sonnet is lo!e, hoe!er this poem is
abo"t anti-lo!e#

points of !ie8 nat"re, the soldier fighting, and the 6farmers in it for the m"sic6#
7larke brings "s readers into the realization that this ar has p"t o"t light, and
no the sea and sand are co!ered by a layer of black# The bea"ty of the arab

The ar is described as a .mortal stain/ that blemishes
e!eryone9s heart and ca"ses death to all the li!ing things and
o"r s"rro"ndings# 7larke mo!es from the en!ironmental cost of
the h"man cost of the ar beca"se .Ahmed/ as a soldier b"rnthen his tank as bombed :.his "niform of fire/;# This creates
an impacting image of ho the ar ca"sed so m"ch pain to
e!eryone#
.Lament++ is like a ake "p call to e!eryone, re!i!ing people intothe reality that the nat"re in all its forms sho"ld not be destroyed
d"e to political differences pro!en by .ashes of lang"age#/

This poem seems to be b"ilt on the idea that nationalism :Strong feelings of
identification with your country; is a p"rely abstract idea# He dras on !ies of
co"ntries as 6imagined comm"nities6 < gro"ps of people bo"nd by myths, stories
and flags# 3e are all h"man and yet certain indi!id"als, poerf"l leaders, ill
create di!isions simply by gi!ing meaning to a limp and .fl"ttering piece of cloth/#
1lag e5plores how national symbols bind nations together < and in
doing so also or!e "eo"le a"art# 1or Agard this poer is a dangero"s
ill"sion# 1lags do not represent anything real at all# &ations are merely
6imagined comm"nities6# 3hile groing "p in +British+ G"yana, for

The poer of the .flag/ can bring a .nation to it9s knees/# The
reader can infer pain and s"rrender that makes the reader angry
toards the actions of this .piece of cloth#/ =nees co"ld connote
s"rrender, imagery of praying# Being on yo"r knees is
personifying the flag, and if someone is on their knees they are
loer than yo", hich means they ha!e less poer
:symbolically;, hich makes the flag so"nd degrading#

The concept of oman as >property9 and >hono"r9 is so deeply rooted in the
c"lt"re of ?akistan that the state ignores the reg"lar occ"rrences of omen
being killed by their families# *t is also beca"se the religio"s leaders "se
"stifications from their religio"s books for sanctioning p"nishments against
the >disobedient9 omen# The poet feels empathy and desires that all omen

they both ha!e similar meaning, hich is that yo" sho"ldn9t
