COMPARTMENT PRESENTATION
ATLANTA FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT
COMPARTMENT 49 YEAR OF ENTRY: 2002 COUNTY: Montmorency ACRES: 1774
REVIEW DATE: September 7, 2000 (Minor Revision 02/04/08 RPP)
T31N, R03E, SECS. 2, 11, 14, & 23. Management Unit Goals and Key Value: Timber and wildlife management. Soil and Topography: Grayling Sand. Ownership Pattern and Land Use around Compartment: Mostly other state land. Some private inholdings. Farmland to the south. Natural Features: None reported. Historical Features: None reported. Special Management Considerations: None. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Miller Creek flows through the south end of the compartment. Wildlife Habitat Objectives: (From Wildlife Compartment Header Comments:) “This compartment lays in the center of a large (7,000 ac) pine complex, the majority of which is under state forest ownership. In the past the northern quarter of the compartment was in deciduous forest types, but much of that has been converted to upland pine. The upland conifer types are primarily red and jack pine mixed with oak regeneration as an understory. There are several aspen regeneration stands scattered through out the compartment. There are several openings in the compartment that are providing habitat diversity to the unit along with two small drainage systems running east-west across the compartment. Nearly all of this compartment is in the brush-creek water course,
Thunderbay watershed. All of the openings are in need of enhancement work to maintain the grass cover types. Soils are very light in this compartment, making it desirable to maintain the openings with fire instead of mechanical disturbance. Several of the openings have remnant blue stem in them and would be prime stands to manage as natural warm season grass. One stand (411) has Hill's Thistle in it. A large (100 ac+) complex of openings, jack/red pine, aspen, and oak regeneration stands exist in the center portion of the compartment, south of brush-creek. This mixture of stands could be managed as a pine-prairie-barren complex if fire is use for management. This complex is described under the comments for stand 435.” Mineral Resource Development, Concerns, and Restrictions: A natural gas processing facility exists in stand 83. Several gas wells and gas flow lines will be found here. Vehicular Access: Excellent. Survey Needs and Trespasses: One or more trespasses were noted and the trespassers notified. No surveys are needed at this time. Public Recreation: Hunting, ORV use, snowmobiling. Public Use Problems: Other than above mentioned trespasses, few use problems were identified. Red Pine Project Treating Stands 8, 12, 19, 21, 38, 42, 68 out of entry for Red Pine Project. Review Date: March 28, 2008.
