Jan Martin is from San Antonio, Texas, USA, but has been teaching in Moscow, Russia for the past year. When asked why she chose to come to Ukraine she explained, “Moscow is a fascinating city with lots of things to do and see, but I was ready for some-where a little less crowded and a bit more relaxed. So far Kiev has been a terrific change of pace. It’s a beauti-ful city and people have been really friendly.” Although Jan is enjoying the snow and all the new experiences of winter, like many people in Kiev, she is really looking forward to the spring.

One day she went to put her letter into a mail box, she saw a squirrel. It jumped on the tree and shook off the snowflakes. Study Abroad Department

my trip to

This January the Director of Studies of the Young Learners’ depart-ment Lana Sushko took part in the annual DOS seminar in London. It was her first time in London that is why she is sharing her impres-sions of this amazing city with you.

Dreams come true

I absolutely fell in love with London! I loved the freedom, the squirrels, the public transportation, the ideals and the attitudes of the city. I loved all the gardens, parks and public areas of the city. And I loved the sound and look of the people of London. People in London are different from people here and you can see this immediately. They dress differently, they look at you without judgement, they smile and talk to you and they are really polite. Nobody cares what you are doing on the tube or bus (unless it bothers them) – putting on make-up, eating your take-away or kissing with your boyfriend. And suddenly you get this feeling of freedom which I didn’t notice in any other city. There's a great mixture of people and cultures in London. You get that feeling on the Tube, walking around the city and even stopping for a coffee. The weather was a bit unusual for Londoners – they aren’t used to temperatures below zero. And on some days it was -10 (!!!). However, they didn’t want to change their habits and kept jogging during their lunch break in the amazing London parks. And the parks ARE fabulous! The Green Park, with its huge trees and trying to keep fit locals and St James’ Park, old and crowded with tourists feeding birds and squirrels, taking photos and chatting in different languages. I also loved the feeling of diversity in this city. From a tourist's point-of-view, there's so much to see in London. And you really get the feeling while touring the city, that there are people from all over the world in London that are just there to explore the city's beauty, art and history. It's a great feeling! One I truly enjoyed. But one of my favorite memories though will be feeding cheeky squirrels in Green Park.

Next IH Compass competition: What

do you know about London?

The winner will be awarded a special 50% discount for the lessons at any

option.

Dear John: I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever happy - will you let me be yours? Gloria

A man telephoned London Airport. How long does it take to get to New York?Just a minute. Thanks very much.

A linguistics professor was lecturing to his class one day. "In English," he said, "A double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative." A voice from the back of the room piped up, 'Yeah, right.'

Teacher: Where is your homework?

Pupil: I lost it fighting this kid who said you weren't the best teacher in the school!

A mother mouse and a baby mouse are walking along, when all of a sudden, a cat attacks them. The mother mouse goes, "BARK!" and the cat runs away. "See?" says the mother mouse to her baby. "Now do you see why it's important to learn a foreign language?"
