Community Impact by the Numbers

For more than a century, AnMed Health has been caring for the health and wellness of our community. Each day, we dedicate ourselves to being a center of excellence in providing the highest quality of health care strengthened by compassionate patient support, innovative medicine and uncompromising standards of personal care and service for our patients and families.

We treat all patients without regard to an individual’s ability to pay. Charity care is a key part of the community services AnMed Health provides and serves low-income individuals and families who are unable to pay for medically necessary services. Efforts are made to assist these individuals in obtaining help from public agencies, and those who do not qualify for public funding are evaluated for financial assistance or charity care through AnMed Health. Assistance includes discounting a portion or the entire medical bill or establishing payment arrangements.

Uncompensated costs have increased over the past several years to $57.6 million, 12.4 percent of total operating expenses.

In the midst of a lagging economy, many people have lost jobs or work for businesses where health benefits have been cut due to the increased cost of health insurance. The increase in charity care underscores the importance of philanthropy in serving the healthcare needs of our community.

Compassion…Caring for Community

During the past year, AnMed Health has implemented several initiatives and celebrated many accomplishments to build upon our foundation of excellence. Here, we share a few of the many highlights that illustrate our commitment to enhancing the health and wellbeing of our community.

The Joint Commission names AnMed Health a “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures” In 2011, The Joint Commission for the first time recognized top performers on key quality measures. AnMed Health was one of only 405 hospitals nationwide to earn this distinction and was the only Upstate hospital included on this list.

Top performers were determined from an aggregation of accountability measures reported to The Joint Commission during 2010. The distinction was based on data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for conditions such as heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma.

To be recognized as a top performer, hospitals had to achieve a composite performance score of 95 percent or higher from all of the accountability measures they reported to The Joint Commission. These organizations also had to meet or exceed a 95 percent performance target for each individual accountability measure they report data for, with the exception of those with 30 or fewer eligible cases.

AnMed Health was recognized for achieving these 95 percent thresholds for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.

New technology expands heart rhythm capabilities The electrophysiology lab at AnMed Health Heart and Vascular Center was under construction for about two months as AnMed

Health made room for a new GE biplane.

The biplane simultaneously covers a patient’s front and side for a variety of cardiovascular and neurovascular image-guided interventional procedures. As a result, these procedures can be done with fewer X-rays and contrast injections, a significant benefit for the patient.

The new equipment also allows doctors to perform atrial fibrillation ablation, a procedure that patients previously had to leave town for. Atrial fibrillation is a condition that affects millions of patients in the United States and is one of the most common heart rhythm disorders.

Ablation allows doctors to destroy the abnormal heart tissue causing disturbances in the patient’s heart rhythm.

Dr. Joseph Manfredi, medical director of the electrophysiology lab, performed AnMed Health’s first atrial fibrillation ablation in late August.

Physician Network adds seven new practicesThe AnMed Health Physician Network welcomed seven new practices in 2011 with doctors ranging in expertise from primary care and pediatrics to cardiology, pulmonology and sleep medicine.

The network added three new primary care practices – AnMed Health Lakeside Family Medicine, AnMed Health Palmetto Family Medicine and AnMed Health Daniel A. Keenan Jr.

Lakeside Family Medicine is the office of Drs. Elizabeth Boyer, Melody Franks and Justin Moore. Palmetto Family Medicine in Pelzer

is the office of Dr. Daniel Koontz. AnMed Health Daniel A. Keenan Jr. is the solo internal medicine practice of Dr. Daniel Keenan.

Carolina Kids Pediatrics became the network’s fourth pediatrician’s office, AnMed Health Carolina Kids. Located in Seneca, Carolina Kids is the office of Dr. James Feiste.

The new additions also included several specialists. Eight cardiologists joined the network with the addition of the solo practice of Dr. John Ware and the Anderson office of Carolina Cardiology Consultants. Dr. Ware’s office is now AnMed Health John D. Ware III, M.D. Carolina Cardiology is now AnMed Health Carolina Cardiology. The office is home to Drs. Jerry D. Champ, Paul R. Jones, Rhonda Duncan Mauldin, Scott A. Phillips, Brett C. Stoll, Satish K. Surabhi and John R. Wendt.

In addition to cardiologists, the network welcomed its first pulmonologists. Carolina Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Consultants, a practice that specializes in caring for patients with lung disease and sleep disorders, became AnMed Health Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Consultants. The office is home to Drs. Stephen H. Hand, Gowdhami Mohan, Abhijit Raval, Charles A. Thompson and William W. Walker.

Collaboration…Partnering for a Healthier Community

At AnMed Health, we strongly believe in giving back. We extend caring beyond our facility walls to enhance quality of life through community events, outreach programs and partnerships with other organizations.

Here are just a few of the many collaborative community partnerships AnMed Health was involved in during the past year:Lights Before Christmas – a tree lighting ceremony for the communityCamp Asthmania – a special event for children with asthmaTeddy Bear Clinic – an event to help ease children’s fears about medical proceduresCancer Survivors Day – a day of celebration for cancer survivorsWe also support several other community events, including the YMCA Midnight Flight, Anderson Cancer Association’s Sing for the Cure, Anderson Free Clinic’s Walk with the Docs, and have a successful United Way Campaign.

Children’s Health Center is Key to Family’s Wellbeing Life as parents of a 14-year-old daughter and active 11-year-old triplet boys has its own set of challenges. Add in a couple of freak accidents resulting in brain injuries on top of mild cerebral palsy, asthma, ADHD and the usual childhood flu and stomach virus, and you have a different set of needs. One that not only requires having a good doctor, but having a pediatrician’s office that you trust and is willing to work with you to ensure your children’s health and proper development.

For the Parrish family, this scenario is reality. Their daughter, Sara, suffers from a brain injury sustained during a bullying incident at a school in New York. “We lived in New York for three years, and we had reported that a young girl was bullying Sara,” said Gail Parrish.

“The girl pushed Sara down a flight of stairs and she hit her head multiple times as she tumbled down and she also broke her ankle.” Parrish explains that Sara’s recovery was slow and she had severe headaches that continued for an extended period of time following the incident. “The doctors in New York told us that they were post-concussive headaches and that they eventually would subside,” she added.

One day while playing with some friends on a blocked off street in

Community…Neighbors Helping Neighbors

The AnMed Health Foundation is honored to have exemplary support from volunteers, friends, organizations, and businesses. This support reflects the true meaning of community. Neighbors coming together to help neighbors.

Without community support, AnMed Health would be unable to have such a positive and long-term impact on people. And that’s what it comes down to: people. Saving and improving people’s lives. Giving children another day, month or year with their mother or father. Giving a cancer patient hope. Delivering healthy babies. Making people’s lives healthier and happier.

The Foundation plays an integral part in our ability to impact the lives of the people we serve.

New York, Matthew – one of the triplets – fell into an unprotected manhole and suffered a head injury. “After the accident, he complained of headaches and double vision, and then he suffered a second concussion when he ran into a pole because of his double vision,” Parrish said.

The family was struggling to find the healthcare they needed to address their children’s needs. They moved back to Anderson in 2009 to help Parrish’s mother who has Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Born premature, the triplets –

Madison, Matthew, and Michael – have some additional conditions, including ADHD, asthma and Asperger’s syndrome. These involve ongoing monitoring and treatment with pediatricians as well as a psychologist and counselor to handle mood disorders and other behavioral issues related to their medical conditions.

After moving back, Parrish found what her family needed – a pediatric office dedicated to providing quality care for families with limited financial resources or health insurance.

ANMED HEALTH COMMUNITY PROGRAMS SUPPORTED THROUGH CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FOUNDATION:

Westside Family Medicine serves an at-risk community in Anderson – an area where a majority of residents do not have health insurance and often go without proper medical care – and provides preventive health, wellness and medical care in a family-oriented setting.

At the Children’s Health Center, our youngest patients – infants and children - are able to see a caring physician for sick and well visits and receive needed vaccinations to promote a healthy future for our entire community.

Pediatric Therapy Works is a unique and comprehensive therapy program that provides a new world of opportunity each year to more than 600 children with developmental delays and disorders.

The Medical Outreach Van makes more than 70 stops each year and offers free or low-cost health screenings, including blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, and cholesterol checks that often detect potentially serious health risks.

The Chaplain’s Fund is a safety net for hundreds of patients who need a critical prescription or medical supplies that they simply cannot afford.

For elderly or disabled persons living alone and feeling vulnerable, the Lifeline Fund provides a critical emergency response service in their home to those who cannot afford to pay for the service.

The Peggy G. Deane Nursing Professional Development Fund supports the advancement of education and training in the field of nursing, nursing education and nursing administration for deserving men and women.

“Without the AnMed Health Children’s Center, we would have nowhere else to turn in Anderson,” Parrish says. “Our children are on Medicaid, and it’s hard to find a practice that will accept a family with four children, all with chronic medical conditions.”

“The doctors here are the best we’ve ever had,” Parrish adds. “All of the doctors take the time to really talk with us and the children, trying to form the best course of action.”

She shares a story of how Dr. Bradford noticed that Madison’s shoes were wearing out quickly, and he saw this, along with some other symptoms, as a sign of an underlying condition. After further testing and referrals with other professionals, they determined that Madison has a mild case of cerebral palsy and needed to start therapy immediately. “He sees things that I never thought about as a health-related condition, and now that we know, we can address it head on,” Parrish says.

Parrish first contacted AnMed Health Pediatric Therapy Works for therapy for Sarah, Matthew and Michael, but, due to the office’s limited capacity, there is currently a waiting list for new patients. “We go to a therapist in Greenville, but we have been able to work with Pediatric Therapy Works for some specific treatments and programs, and we have loved it,” Parrish says.

The Parrish family frequents the AnMed Health Children’s Health Center and enjoys the center’s family-friendly feel, professional staff and comprehensive pediatric services under one roof. Sarah sees Dr. Sheila Woods and the boys see Dr. Nathan Bradford, and the children have formed strong relationships with their physicians.

“At their ages, it’s important that the children feel comfortable talking with their doctors and be open about what they’re feeling and what’s going on,” Parrish says. “Dr. Bradford and Dr. Woods are so super with my children. They listen to them and are very caring.”

The AnMed Health Children’s Health Center is a vital part of AnMed Health’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of our children by providing cost effective pediatric care to families. In addition to the seven pediatricians on staff, the Center also has a pediatric psychiatrist and counselor to contribute to its patients’ healthy development.

“Our family and our entire community need the Children’s Health Center,” Parrish says. “Donations to the Foundation in support of the Children’s Health Center are being used for a vital service, and we truly are grateful that the Center is here for our family.”

Sharon Randall EventSharon Randall – a nationally syndicated and award-winning columnist and South Carolina native – returned to AnMed Health last year to share her stories and insight with more than 300 local fans while raising money to support the AnMed Health Cancer Center Infusion Center. Proceeds from the event, which raised more than $17,000, helped the Infusion Center provide transfusions, chemotherapy infusions, and other critical procedures to cancer patients unable to afford these vital treatments. Randall, known for her conversational columns that eloquently describe “everyday people and ordinary things,” has a personal connection to cancer, having lost her mother to lung cancer at age 70 and her first husband who lost a long battle with cancer in 1998.

Lifeline Spreads Holiday Spirit to those in NeedAn annual holiday season fundraiser, Lights for Lifeline raises awareness and money for the AnMed Health Lifeline Fund, which helps elderly and disabled persons living alone purchase the Lifeline personal emergency response system for their homes. Donations to the fund are celebrated during the Star Lighting event, when the star on top of the AnMed Health Medical Center is lit for the holiday season. Additionally, the Independence Day campaign raises funds from generous donors who wish to give the “gift of independence” to those in need during the July Fourth holiday. Together, these campaigns raised more than $11,400 to benefit more than 100 patients who

cannot afford the system on their own.

Grateful Patient Program Honors Caregivers in a Special WayThe AnMed Health Foundation rolled out a new Grateful Patient program for patients who wish to thank a doctor, nurse or others who cared for them during their stay. Through this program, patients or their loved ones are able to make a gift to recognize a caregiver in a meaningful way…one that will have a positive impact on others in our community. Patients may designate their donation to a particular program. The caregiver will be notified and recognized when a gift is made in his or her honor.

Discover AnMed Health Events Education UpdatesThroughout the year, donors and supporters had the chance to learn about advances in healthcare and patient care and get an inside look at the processes that make it all happen at AnMed Health. These “Discover AnMed Health” events included several interesting topics including patient load management in the emergency department, the neuroscience center, and cancer treatment and technology.

Camellia Ball Raises Funds and Awareness for Pediatric Therapy WorksThe 17th annual Camellia Ball, a premier black-tie event in Anderson held each February, raised more than $119,000 in net proceeds to benefit the young patients of AnMed Health Pediatric Therapy Works. “Not only is this a fun event for our community, but it is the largest fundraiser for AnMed Health Pediatric Therapy Works,” said Moyer Albergotti, chair of the 2011 Camellia Ball Committee. “It’s an excellent opportunity for people to learn about the amazing work they do, the precious children and families they help, and to ensure that families on this journey continue to have access to the services at Pediatric Therapy Works,” she added. This year’s event attracted more than 500 attendees, 70 sponsors and countless volunteers.

New Location Puts Foundation in Heart of Healthcare SystemIn the spring of 2011, the AnMed Health Foundation moved to a new location on the first floor of the AnMed Health Medical Center on North Fant Street. After seven years at its previous location near the North Campus, this move places the Foundation in the heart of the healthcare system where patients, volunteers, staff and donors have easier access. Philanthropy has been an integral part of AnMed Health since its beginnings more than 100 years ago. “Our founder Jennie Gilmer held bake sales and other fundraisers to raise the money to build Anderson’s first hospital in 1908, so it is only fitting that our Foundation office is located on the site where it all began,” says Michael Cunningham, vice president for advancement.

Arts Infusion Art Show & SaleIn August, 50 artists contributed their time, talent and proceeds from art sales to benefit indigent patients of the AnMed Health Cancer Center Infusion Center. The second annual Arts Infusion Art Show and Sale, held at the Anderson County Arts Center, showcased paintings, sculptures, glasswork, pottery,

photography and jewelry created by local artists.

Ambassador Program Builds Knowledge, Expands SupportThe AnMed Health Ambassador Program provides insight into different service areas available at AnMed Health to a group of community and business leaders. The ambassadors dedicate their time over a 10-month period to learn more about the many programs and services AnMed Health offers by meeting monthly with senior management, department directors and program managers.

JENNIE GILMER LEGACY SOCIETY

The Jennie Gilmer Legacy Society recognizes those who support the health of our community through a planned gift to the AnMed Health Foundation. It honors forward-thinking gifts, often made through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift, that demonstrate a real commitment to support the future and overall health of our community. This giving society is named in honor of Jennie Gilmer, whose leadership and passion for quality health care, laid the foundation for AnMed Health. Her legacy lives on today and will benefit our community for generations to come.

We wish to express our gratitude to Legacy Society members Mr. James Campbell and his wife, the late Katie Campbell, who have made extraordinary gifts to the AnMed Health Foundation.

Donor Support

Philanthropy’s impact on just one patient is immeasurable. Gifts to the AnMed Health Foundation touch lives and bring hope and healing to so many. For every dollar raised through charitable contributions to the Foundation, a dollar goes to provide healthcare services and compassionate care to our community. At AnMed Health, we are committed to a philanthropic approach that will ensure that local health needs are met and to promote long-term advancement of health care for our entire community.

Patients of all ages benefit each and every day from the generosity of our donors. The support of many individuals, businesses, professionals and community leaders helps fund necessary community programs, patient services, and the acquisition of technology and equipment to deliver quality patient care.

These programs make primary care more accessible to uninsured or underinsured individuals and families. The Children’s Health Center, Pediatric Therapy Works, Westside Family Medicine, Medical Outreach Van and Patient Assistance Funds, including the Chaplain’s Fund and Lifeline Fund, are irreplaceable tools in serving the community’s healthcare needs.

WHITE COAT SOCIETY

The White Coat Society honors those individuals who, through their generous philanthropy, set the standards of giving and contributing to our efforts to enhance the health and wellbeing of the entire community. All members of the White Coat Society have reached a lifetime giving level exceeding $100,000 to the AnMed Health Foundation and may include annual giving, capital campaign contributions, and other gifts.

This year, we are pleased to welcome four new members to this prestigious society. Each has attained the “Doctor of Philanthropy” status.

Gifts to the AnMed Health Foundation are used to save and change lives every day through advanced, compassionate health care provided at AnMed Health.

Consider what your generosity could do for the health of your community.

The AnMed Health Foundation welcomes contributions to support the mission of AnMed Health. There are many ways to give and make a difference including gifts of cash, securities, bequests, life insurance policies and other property. We offer many annual giving opportunities, such as donations to fundraisers or special events – including the Camellia Ball, Arts Infusion Art Show & Sale, Kids Classic Golf Tournament, Lights for Lifeline and Independence Day campaign.

The Foundation also has several endowment funds established to support the art of healing. Donations to these funds subsidize special initiatives to bring art throughout the healthcare system to enrich our healing and nurturing environment. These funds include Sculpture for the Soul, Healing Gardens, Symphony of the Spirit and Art for the Heart. A fifth endowment - The Virginia Gilmer Women’s and Children’s Learning Center Fund – provides financial support of the learning center, which offers information, classes and workshops to help women make informed decisions about their health and the health of their children and families.

To make a personal gift or to learn about the many ways of giving that are available, contact the AnMed Health Foundation at 864.512.3477.
