It may sound strange but it is true that every origami model is built up from the same set of fold types. Thus, if you learn (oralready know) the following techniques of folding, you shall not have problems folding the models in this book. The folds typesare related with each other, since all of them are a specific composition of "valley" and "mountain" folds (which are nameddifferently only because of the viewer's point of view, otherwise they are the same). In the following explanatory diagrams thepictures whose number is highlighted, show how that specific fold type is denoted later in the models' diagrams.

Zárt süllyesztést ( ) csak elohajtás ( ) után végezzünk! A süllyesztést a besüllyesztendo csúcs alapjainál kezdjük ( ),majd a rétegeket együtt tartva süllyesszük be teljesen ( - ). A besüllyesztett csúcs egy zsebet fog formálni.

2 1 34 5

Execute a closed sink ( ) only after precreasing ( ). Start sinking at the base of the corner to be sinked ( ), then sinkit completely, keeping the layers locked together ( - ). The closed sinked corner will form new pocket.

2 1 34 5

2

3 4 5The wrap ( ), if observed closely, is similar to a closed sink but by wrapping, a layer is "swinged" around an edge rather than acorner being sunk underneath a layer. To make a wrap, open up the flap to be wrapped as far as possible ( - ), then suddenlyinvert the whole ( - - ) - partly unfolding the model will help.

1.

Begin with a square, white side up, with both diagonals precreased.

Valley fold the lower left side to thehorizontal center line, bisecting theangle on the left corner, but creaseonly where the fold intersects thelower right side. Unfold.

2.

Valley fold the bottom corner tothe center of the square, againcreasing only on the right side. Unfold.

3.

Valley fold the bottom point up sothat the intersection of the edge ofthe paper and the angle bisectorfrom Step 1 lays on the crease linefrom Step 2. Rotate the paper 180°.

4.

Reverse fold the top sides in tothe center line, creating a smallpreliminary base at the top. Thenext diagrams are enlarged.

180°

5.

Valley fold the sides of thepreliminary base at the top to thecenter line and unfold.

6.

Petal fold on the creases fromStep 5.

7.

Valley fold the petal back down.

8.

Valley fold the lower edges to thecenter, bisecting the lower point oneach side, and unfold. Because ofthe proportions used in Steps 1-3,the side corners of the paper shouldlie right at the lower tip of the petalfold at the top when the edges areat the center line.

9.

Valley fold the top point (includingthe bird base assembly) downalong a line that connects the topsof the angle bisectors from Step 8. This crease should go across thevery tip of the petal fold. Unfold.

Page 19: Compilation of Origami

10.

Valley fold the entire model in half, right side over left. Rotate themodel 90° counterclockwise (thethick point including the petal foldwill be on the left).

90°11.

Valley fold the thick point at the leftdown to the bottom point andunfold.

12.

Valley fold the thick point at the leftdown to the intersection of the edgeand the angle bisector from Step 8and unfold.

13.

Double reverse fold the thick, leftpoint inwards on the crease fromStep 11 and back out on the creasefrom Step 12.

14.

Valley fold the upper part of thepaper (including the upper part ofthe thick, petal folded assemblyinside) as far upwards as it willnaturally fall.

15.

The result. Unfold the top flapback down.

16.

Turn the paper over fromside-to-side.

17.

Fold the top flap up again, as inStep 14.

18.

Turn over from side-to-side. The next diagrams areenlarged.

19.

Valley fold the left half of themodel (top flap only) over theright, creating a vertical lineconnecting the top andbottom points, and unfold.

20.

Squash fold the left handpart of the upeprmost flapto the right. The lower leftpoint of the fold lies wheremany layers are lockedtogether.

20.

Squash fold the left hand partof the upeprmost flap to theright. The lower left point ofthe fold lies where manylayers are locked together.

Page 20: Compilation of Origami

Valley fold the top flap at thelower right of the squash tothe vertical central line andunfold.

21.

Swivel fold on the crease youmade in Step 21. Anadditional valley fold will bemade that connects thecorner at the lower left andthe upper end of the creasemade in Step 21.

22.

Wrap the small flap on thesurface underneath.

23.

Valley fold the topmost flap onthe right over to the left, incorporating a rabbit ear inthe triangle.

24.

Unfold the flap and rabbit earfrom Step 24. Turn the modelover side-to-side.

25.

Fold the petal at right back up along the existingcrease.

26.

Page 21: Compilation of Origami

The loose colored triangle that lies on top of the pointat the bottom is connected to some paper that iscurrently trapped inside the model. Grabbing thecircled points, pull them gently apart and away fromeach other to expose it; in doing so, the upper half ofthe model will also swing up.

27. 28.

Pull out the trapped layer of paper, wrapping it aroundthe the raised edge at the lower right (this is adiamond-shaped layer of paper when unfolded; as youdo this, or unfold it, unwrap the paper, and refold it).The freed paper at the bottom of the petal fold at rightwill swing up. This is a difficult move.

29.

Now the rectangle of paper is free, and sticking up in this diagram. Flattenthe model by pushing the freed flap and the points to which it is connecteddown. The point at right that is connected to the petal fold goes the left, andthe larger point at the bottom valley folds up and to the left on a new crease.

Valley fold the top flap down and to the right.

30.

Swivel the flap to the left. The valley fold at right and the verticalmountain fold are on existing creases. The right portion of the flapswivels downwards, and the left side swivels up and to the left.

31.

Valley fold over and over three times to narrow thewhite flap. Only the first crease is new.

32.

1

2

3

Page 22: Compilation of Origami

Valley fold the narrow flap and point at the bottomover to the right and unfold.

33.

Reverse fold the flap through on the crease from Step33.

34.

Narrow the colored flap with two swivel folds. One narrows the flapcovering the large point at the bottom; the other narows the coloredpoint to the right, but note that it does not continue all the way to thetip of the point. Note that the swivel should go through theintersection (circled) of the flaps beneath (indicated by the x-raylines).

35.

The result. Turn the model over fromtop-to-bottom.

36.

37.38.

Valley fold the large flap at the bottom up asfar as possible. Repeat Steps 20-35 in mirror image on this

side.

20-35 x1

Page 23: Compilation of Origami

Pull out paper under the two broad points atleft, unfolding the petal fold and associatedpaper.

39. 40.

Fold the model in half, bringing the topportion down over the bottom. The nextseries of diagrams are reduced in size.

41.

Unsink the chevron-shaped paper frombetween the layers.

42.

Spread squash the angled layer in thecenter. The valley fold on the top layer is onan existing crease. Repeat behind.

43.

Valley fold the narrow flap at the left backdown. Repeat behind.

44.

Closed sink the flap inside. This is not easybecause it's difficult to reach inside themodel at this point without unfolding a lot ofthe model. Repeat behind.

45.

Valley fold the tall, narrow flap at right over tothe left; repeat behind.

46.

Closed sink this flap inside, as well. Repeatbehind.

Page 24: Compilation of Origami

47.

Valley fold the upper half of the model downalong a line even with the top of the point atleft.

48.

Valley fold the flap up at an angle. The foldline connects the very tip at the right with thepoint along the top edge at left.

49.

Bring a layer from underneath the fin flap tothe surface. This is something like unsinkinga layer. This need not be repeated behind;in fact, this move will return symmetry of thelayers to the model.

50.

Swivel fold the top layers to narrow both theleg and the tail. Note that while the leg isfolded along an angle bisector, the tail is not,and the flap goes further down than itspresent lower edge. Repeat behind.

51.

Swivel fold the top layers of the leg and tailagain. As before, the leg flap gets bisected;the tail flap should line up with the edgebeneath. Repeat behind.

Fold the narrow, white flap on the bottom ofthe tail inside. Repeat behind.

52.

Valley fold the narrow flap on top the leg overto the right; repeat behind.

53.

Closed sink the flap inside to narrow the leg. Repeat behind.

54.

Page 25: Compilation of Origami

Double reverse fold the point at left up. The firstreverse fold is hidden beneath the triangular pointsand is indicated by the x-ray and mountain fold lines;the second reverse fold is indicated by the verticalvalley fold line.

55.

Outside reverse fold the flap on the right along theedge of the arm points below. This occurs on anexisting crease. The next diagrams are enlarged.

56.

Outside reverse fold the flap again, bisectingthe arm (lower) points.

57.

Inside crimp the arms in half, bringing the head down abit. In order to do this effectively and without ripping thepaper, you will have to push in (like an open sink) the bitof the hump on the back that is hidden inside the neck(indicated by the x-ray line).

58.

Outside crimp the head down. Note that thecrease lines for the crimp do not meet on thetop of the neck — you'll have to spread somepaper and push out a bit from the inside to dothis.

59.

Narrow the neck by mountain folding some ofthe flap in front inside; as you do this, a smallbit of the bottom of the head will be squashedinto a gusset inside. Repeat behind.

60.

Page 26: Compilation of Origami

Reverse fold the tip of the snout. Closed sinkthe point on the hump on the back to makethe hump roughly of equal height along theback (it will still get shorter along the tail).

61.

Rabbit-ear the thick arm points and swingthem upwards. Reverse fold the tips of theleg points to form feet. Repeat both foldsbehind.

62.

Fold hands down at the ends of the arms. Dent in someof the paper on the legs to shape the knee and ankle.Repeat behind. Inside the neck, closed sink some of themiddle layer upwards to form a continuation of the humpon the back on the top of the neck.
