Institutions

on

Defence Sector

Edition - One

January 2018

MESSAGE

My compliments to this endeavour, one of the first of its kind in the defence

sector, where an effort has been made to compile academic activities that could be

potentially exploited by the industry to meet the modernisation and sustenance

requirements of the armed forces.

I appreciate the effort put in to compile this highly upstream activity with a

distinct focus towards indigenisation by the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers

(SIDM). This also has the potential to spur a new relationship between the academia

and the manufacturing segment mutually benefiting each other.

I am confident that the Ministry of Defence on its part would look at an

enabling policy framework to support new ideas, innovation and indigenisation to

achieve self-reliance for national security.

‘Jai Hind’

Dr Ajay Kumar Secretary, Defence Production Ministry of Defence Government of India

MESSAGE

Research & Development is the preliminary step towards producing indigenously

designed weapon systems and a pre-requisite to become self-reliant for national

security. The Indian industry realises and values the merits of investing in R&D and

is slowly but steadily increasing investment in R & D for Defence sector to develop

capabilities and technologies in key building blocks of Defence Systems and

Platforms. Industry is collaborating with premier academic institutes to advance their

efforts in unprecedented areas and in some cases providing necessary support to

encourage fundamental R & D and innovation.

It is imperative that the Industry and the Academia works in tandem to develop

innovative and novel technology to meet the Indian Defence requirements. The

Government and the users would benefit by making informed decisions towards

defence requirement. This report is one of many initiatives that Society of Indian

Defence Manufacturers would be undertaking to collate and publish research

projects for the benefit of Government the Industry and the armed forces.

I am confident that this effort will bear fruit and not only give momentum to the ‘Make

in India’ effort, but will also provide Indian solutions to our defence needs.

Baba N Kalyani President, SIDM

Chairman & Managing Director Bharat Forge Ltd

FOREWORD

This compilation of research projects being carried out

by various academia in the country was based on an

idea generated by the Honorable Raksha Mantri. The

SIDM, in one of the first projects after being raised as a

single point contact for the defence manufacturers, took

it upon itself to produce this compilation for the benefit of

the Industry. This is by no means exhaustive or

complete and is a work in progress. The SIDM considers

this as a beginning with an aim to facilitate the linkage between the academia and

the defence industry to provide ‘Indian Solutions’ to Indian problems. In this

compilation, an effort has been introduced to also highlight dual benefits accruing, if

any, out of the project for the civil society too.

This compilation has only been possible due to the prompt response by the

academic institutions spread across the country and we express our sincere thanks

to them for sharing the details of the projects. In this Edition of January 2018, we

have listed 188 projects for the benefit of the Industry, especially the MSMEs, to get

in touch with the academic institutions and to create a successful partnership for the

benefit of the Defence Services and the society on the whole.

Lt Gen Subrata Saha, PVSM, UYSM, YSM, VSM** (Retd) Secretary & Director General, SIDM

Principal Adviser, CII

Project or Field Research

“Ionic liquids (IL) and Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) as Electrolytes for Energy

Efficient Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitor”.

(In collaboration with VIKRAM SARABHAI SPACE CENTRE, Trivandrum and IIT

Guwahati)

Primary Utilisation of the Technology

Super capacitors use electrostatic double-layer capacitance instead of the conventional solid

dielectric of ordinary capacitors, which operates on redox reactions. They are used in

applications that require rapid charge or discharge rather than long-term compact energy

storage. They can store 10-100 times more energy per unit than electrolytic capacitors and

bridge the gap between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries. In our case it will

be mainly used for on-board space launch vehicles. Currently the project is sponsored under

ISRO-RESPOND program.

Field of Application for Defence Use

They can be used in battle tanks, radar-mounted vehicles and artillery guns for

providing the necessary high power or energy density within a short time interval.

Potential for Dual Use, if Any.

It can also be used nowadays in Electric cars and is an efficient source of energy in modern

Airbus industry such as A380.

Suggestions on Manufacturers who could Harness the Technology

The primary manufacture as per our project is ISRO. The proposed project aims to improve

the operating potential window (OPW) of supercapacitors from 2.5 to 3 V to 4-5 volts using

IL and/or DES based electrolytes. Previous work have already reported that supercapacitors

with IL’s based electrolytes shown a wider range of operating voltage than the one with

conventional organic electrolytes. Tata Motors has been testing super capacitors for

hybrid electrical vehicles, while three private firms - Spel and Chheda Electrical at

Pune and Aartech Solonics at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh are involved in developing

them in the private sector.

Project or Field of Research

Design and Analysis of Antennas for Inter-satellite Communications. (IIT Roorkee)

Primary Utilization of Technology

Antennas for inter-satellite communications, can broadly be classified into two different types

depending on its usage:

a. Antennas to communicate between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to LEO

Such antennas are intra-orbit broadband antennas. Mostly these antennas are designed as

bore-sight antennas and due to requirement of high data rates, these antennas are

supposed to have very large bandwidth

b. Antennas to communicate between LEO to Geo-stationary Earth Orbit (GEO)

Such antennas are directive antennas and are mainly used for long range communication.

To fulfill the requirement of long range such antennas are designed to have large gain and

narrow bandwidth

Field of application for defense use

Although the main aim of this project is to design and develop antennas for inter-satellite link

based futuristic mobile communications, the same thing can equally be used for defense

applications. One of our designed and tested antennas is able to operate in the frequency

range from 10GHz to more than 150GHz. These antenna systems can be used in defense

sectors for hostile free applications.

Potential for Dual use

This technology can also be useful for Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Project or Field of Research :

Data –driven Cybersecurity , Social Network Analysis, Machine Learning Big Data.

Detecting , Visualizing and Combating Ransomware Attacks by Leveraging Social Media.

(Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi, India)

Primary Utilization of the Technology :

The project will produce the following technologies that can have several utilizations:

• A novel machine learning model specifically designed for those datasets that contain

small (annotated) training set. The technique can leverage social media data and

novel data mining techniques to infiltrate security related events from the massive

tweet dataset.

• A novel real-time monitoring system that can help a layman to understand emerging

security threats.

• A controlled environment for experts to monitor the spread of the threats and their

potential sources.

Field of Application for Defence Use :

Indian Defence and Security Services can use the technology in the following two ways:

• They can analysis and predict the cyber –attack propagation based on our novel

mathematically grounded machine learning model.

• Our real-time social media monitoring system for cyber-attack outbreaks based on

our advanced visual analytic systems using social media data can allow them to

detect the newly emerging cyber-attack outbreaks.

Potential for Dual Use, if any :

A normal user can also use this technology to get aware of the emerging threats in order to

protect his/ her own system.

Project or Field of Research:

Network privacy, Cyber-security, Social Network Analysis.

Anon Social Mix: Anonymous P2P File Sharing Over Social Networks

(Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi, India)

Project Description:

Social networks provide a ‘ready –made ‘substrate for a peer to peer network, users

communicate with one another via a network of “friends”. More specifically, the users

communicate with their ‘friends’ who in-turn share information with their ‘friends and so on.

Anonymous online networks allow users to communicate with one another in such a way

that others (viz eavesdroppers) cannot link their communication patterns and data to their

identities. However, such systems require a large number of participants so as to achieve

such unsinkability. Popular social network usually provide such a large user base, well

suited for designing such anonymous communication platforms, which may prevent linking

users to their communication data and patterns.

The goal of our project is to design and implementation of a social network platform that can

be integrated to existing social networks (e.g Facebook, Twitter etc) whereby someone can

communicate with others anonymously, without hiding his or her identity. More preciously,

we plan to design and implement a social network based platform where users can

communicate with others directly without the need to hide existing social network identities

or creating pseudonymous identities. The system would be designed on lines of Crowds

network borrowing several design principles of Freenet, whereby users communicate

anonymously with others. Data request and responses are encrypted in such a way that

only the communication initiator and responder can decipher the traffic contents. For

ordinary users, the traffic would appear to be ordinary English text (achievable by

steganographically obfuscating the ciphertext).

Primary Utilization of the Technology:

While attackers may plan to determine the location of proxies and servers hosting sensitive

information, one may carry out most of the convert communication in plain sight using our

privacy preserving anonymous network, which encrypts and obfuscates the traffic. Not only

can an eavesdropper not decipher the content of the communication, to him/ her it may

appear as plain English language text (viz Ciphertext obfuscated through steganography).

Thus, while attackers may seek to determine (and perhaps exfiltrate) sensitive information

on potentially covertly hosted sites, the data communication may proceed via public social

media sites, without evoking suspicion of the attackers.

Field of Applications for Defense Use:

The system may also be used to communicate anonymously to exchange files/ data without

relying on popular peer-to-peer networks (e.g. Bit torrent), which consumer lot of bandwidth,

thereby slowing down ordinary users who may require (semi) real-time network guarantees,

e.g. while browsing the web or accessing real –time streaming audio.

Development of Nanomaterials based on High Current Density Field Electron

Emitters. (IIT Roorkee)

Primary Utilisation of the Technology

Field emitters can be utilized in various sectors, including electronic displays, high power

microwave generators, as electron source in electron microscopes etc.

Field of Application for Defence Use

One of the potential applications of field emitters is in high power microwave generators,

which can be of high potential use in defense sectors in manufacturing of 'e-bombs'

(popularly known). This is used as source of high power microwaves, which can neutralize

enemy's electronic weapon systems. According to published reports, few advanced

countries in the world, including USA, UK, Russia and China, has established programme

based on 'e-bombs'.

Potential for Dual Use, if any

Field emitters needed for e-bombs, can also be used by ISRO for space applications. Small

capacity microwaves can also be used as internal security forces, for de-stabilizing a mob.

Apart from these applications, electronic manufacturers can use field emitters for electronic

displays or as electron sources for electron guns of electron microscopes or hand-held x-ray

devices.

Primary Utilization of the Technology

The natural disasters such as tsunami and floods will cause damage and destruction of

infrastructure and affect people’s livelihoods, and left many homeless and without adequate

water, healthcare facilities and houses. The main objective of this project is to develop a light

weight construction roof panels using natural fibers such as coir and flax for the construction

of rehabilitation housing in the natural disaster struck areas. Coir as a fibre is having inherent

properties such as higher elongation, good lignin content and as a composite it has good

durability, corrosion resistant and resistant to impact. Compared to other natural fibres, flax

fibres are relatively strong. This is due to the fact that flax fibre has the longer elementary

fibres and good micro fibril orientation.

Project or Field of Research

Surface Engineering – Surface modification Studies on the Tribological

Characteristics of Detonation Gun sprayed coatings.

(Advanced Research Institute (ARI), Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research

Institute, Periyar E.V.R. High Road, Maduravoyal, Chennai-600095)

Primary Utilization of the Technology

Interacting surfaces, strengthened by Detonation Gun (D-Gun) sprayed ceramic coatings

such as alumina, become more durable and wear resistant. Components of high alloy and

costly materials now used can be substituted with low or medium alloy steels such as EN19

steel parts. The components manufactured initially out of these materials can be

subsequently modified by d-gun sprayed ceramic coatings due to which the performance

levels of the substituted components equals or exceeds that of the high strength alloys

Field of Application for Defence Use

War equipment such as tanks (both wheeled and tracked), helicopters etc mostly operate in

adverse environments. The crucial theatres of conflict in Indian sub-continent are mostly

sandy (such as Rajasthan). The critical equipment parts that are exposed to such ambience

undergo accelerated erosive wear and sometimes catastrophic degradation. Hence the

failure can be effectively combated by the following methods :

(i) Life Cycle enhancement : Surface modification of components explained in

previous paragraph.

(ii) Redemption of failed parts: D-gun spraying of the appropriate ceramic material

on the worn out part will make it feasible to repair/ re-build the failed part to its

original condition at a nearby Field Workshop of the Defence forces in quick time.

Potential for Dual Use, if any

Industrial Parts exposed to high temperature and corrosive environments can also be

protected against failure by erosion/corrosion by appropriate surface modification using

sprayed ceramic materials. To cite examples:

(i) Impellers of ships/vessels that operate in shallow waters or close to shore lines can

be strengthened by d-gun sprayed coatings

(ii) D-gun sprayed ceramic coatings are capable of strengthening any machine

components making them durable and capable of withstanding hostile operating

environments and degradation by wear, erosion, corrosion etc. while in use

Suggestions on Manufacturers who could Harness the Technology

M/s Safeltech in Chennai and a few select industrial units located at Hyderabad, Pune and

Delhi are having the Detonation Gun technology (Russian) transferred to them by ARC,

Hyderabad.

Project or Field of Research: Distributed Optical Fiber Intrusion Detection System

(National Institute of Technology, Delhi)

A major concern of most countries is the integrity of their national borders against illegal

immigration, smuggling, hostile invasion and the movement of terrorists. Protecting borders

by Intrusion Detection Systems is unavoidable, especially in specific areas susceptible to

illegal intrusions.

Optical-fiber sensor-based intrusion detection technologies are widely used in perimeter

security protection systems that are based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) principle, reflection

principle and interference principle respectively. Quasi- distributed sensing system

comprises multiple FBG sensors, which can achieve multi-point and multi-parameter

monitoring. But with the increase of FBG sensors in the array, the system cost grows

exponentially. Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) technique is widely used in

distributed monitoring system. The traditional OTDR, using incoherent light, can only

measure intensity of vibrations along the fiber.

Interference as a wave characteristic of the electromagnetic wave has many applications in

science, and technology. The phenomenon of interference of light is used in many high

precision measuring systems and sensors. The optical path can be controlled by optical

waveguides and optical fibers. The use of optical fibers allows making such devices very

compact and economic. Other advantages that make optical fibers become useful elements

in sensing technologies are high elongation sensitivity, fast response to internal or external

defects such as temperature and tension, electromagnetic noise disturbance immunity, less

power consumption, cost effective and potential for large scale multiplexing. Among the lots

of advantages of optical fibers is their ability to reduce the effects of wave front distortion by

the atmospheric turbulence and compact beam-splitter and combiner. These abilities made

optical fiber as a suitable medium for transportation of light in long baseline interferometers

that are used for intruder sensor. As is known, it is important to localize the intruder when an

intrusion signal is detected in a perimeter protection system. Interferometer sensors acquire

distributed information by integration of the phase modulation signal, and usually two

interferometers are used to determine position, including combining the Sagnac to a

Michelson, modified Sagnac/Mach–Zehnder interferometer, twin Sagnac/Michelson /Mach–

Zehnder interferometers, and adopting a variable loop Sagnac.

The performance of outdoor intrusion detection system is measured in terms of the

probability of detection, false alarm rate and nuisance alarm rate. The most important

challenge for distributed fiber-optic intrusion detection systems is to minimize the nuisance

alarm rate without compromising the system sensitivity or probability of detection for a wide

range of operating environments. The minimization of the nuisance alarm rate in intrusion

detection systems, and indeed in any sensing system, is therefore critical for its successful

performance and confidence of operation. An important part of false alarm and nuisance

alarm handling involves being able to recognize and discriminate between nuisance events

and valid intrusion events. Employing advanced signal recognition and discrimination

techniques is a very effective way of minimizing the effects of nuisance alarms without

compromising system sensitivity or the probability of detection. A number of different signal

processing techniques can be used to achieve this and can range from simple filtering and

adaptive filtering techniques, to a number of time-frequency analyses. The crucial point of all

176

event recognition and discrimination techniques is the signal classification process, which

involves extracting and identifying unique features in event signals.

Since a distributed fiber optic sensor can replace many point sensors therefore it is the most

cost effective, and weight and space efficient sensor system, as it only requires one fiber

capable of sending and receiving the signal from the same fiber and only one monitor is

adequate to display the local changes in temperature, stress, strain, vibration and acoustic

waves. These properties are very important for making an efficient detection system.

In the research going on at NIT Delhi, a fiber optics intrusion detection system based on

the principle of interferometry & OTDR for the border security is under development that

may be installed on the fence or buried underground. The developing system would be able

to detect 100-1000’s of events simultaneously. The more efficient analysis technique will be

developed to find the location of intruder with higher spatial resolution with the range of over

100 Km and to minimization of the false and nuisance alarm rate.

Primary Utilisation of the Technology

These include airfields, ammo facilities, power stations, testing facilities, personnel

accommodations and equipment depots. All these facilities require twenty-four hour

protection of both the assets as well as, the military personnel housed there.

Although fortified with sensors, it takes a considerable amount of manpower to monitor and

interpret the myriad of sensors typically installed at a military facility. This manpower has a

significant cost in today’s military’s tight budget. The challenge is to afford the use of these

sensors in a systematic way that allows effective use of personnel so they may spend their

time reacting to a situation, rather than monitoring for a situation. The solution of this

situation is the automated wide area surveillance system based on distributed fiber

optic sensor.

Field of Application for Defense Use

For intrusion detection

Potential for Dual Use, if any

The developing system will be safe and secure without any side effect on plants, human life,

and animal. In that way the research work is safe and will fulfill the aims of the army i.e. it is

having a big potential dual utility and also it could be utilized for civilians home, office and

other parameters security.
