III I he 9nim Iaigec is the most widely chambered military pistol cartridge
in the world. It lias become extremely popular in the US. and is used
by n large number ol law enforcement agencies. Introduced in 1902 by
Ceoig Luger in hi* huger Pistol and dubbed the ymxn I’arabellum, this
cartridge was adopted by the (ierman Aimed Forces just six years
later, t he cai Iridge is also used extensively in submachine guns
Hie 9mm huger in economical and relatively easy to reload. With the
ending of World War II, a great number of military surplus semi-autos
were sold in the U S, which also enhanced popularit>- of the round in
lliis Country. Today, every major US. manufacturer offers a firearm in
this caliber. Many foreign producers otter tine tirearms in the 9mm
huger. I hc US. armed services have adopted a Ueretta pistol, the M9,
as the official side-arm. the large munber of firearms in 9mm
prompted the need for commercial ammunition and reloading sup¬
plies. Homady offers reloading dies and eight different bullets for the
9mm.
Powders that wo iked exceptionally well in our test weapon were Her¬
cules Unique, Winchester 231. and A A-??. AA*2 produced the highest
velocity of all the powders tesled with the W, 1U0, 115 and I2T grain
bullets while AAH7 and blue Dot gave the highest velocity with the
IT/ grain bullet. Velocity difference l>etween h arvd 5" barrels were
negligible. Note; When reloading for the 9mm, care must be taken that
little or no crimp be used, since I he 9mm I lead spaces on the mouth of
the case.
