Portable water -the most important product for mankind

Potable water is the most important productfor our nutrition. As it is subject to strictdirections and controls, each consumer issupplied with high quality water. However, behind the water meter, stagnantwater, old or oversized storage cylinders aswell as a badly isolated pipework supportthe development of noxious pathogenicgerms. The user is responsible for the observanceof all instructions!

The Decree for Potable Water attaches greatimportance to prevention. Settlement anddevelopment of micro-organisms have to beprevented by constructive measures duringdesign and realisation of an installation. Thespecifying engineer and installer must proveand are responsible that the system wasinstalled and put into operation according toapproved rules of technology. Valid rules, guidelines and regulations must be adheredto.

a sign of quality

Valves and controls for potable water instal-lations are subjected to strict directionswhich are defined in the DIN 1988 standard. The material must not impair the water qua-lity – not even long term. The emission of alloy-ing constituents of bronze is defined in the Ger-man Decree for Potable Water (TrinkwV).The Oventrop potable water system is madeof materials which meet these requirements.Especially bronze is used in many sectors.Bronze is a material combining many par-ticular characteristics and, amongst others, offers the following advantages:

- hygienically safe- corrosion resistant- non-ageing- temperature resistant- 100% recyclableThe millennium-old experience renders theuse of this material safe which is historicallyproven.

Potential risks in potable water systemsDesign

Potential risks in potable water systems

The living conditions for harmful micro-organisms must be rendered as hostile aspossible and bio films must be avoided inparticular. Cell masses of algae, bacteria andfungus together with iron and lime depositsform a bio film on inner pipe walls, in appli-ances and storage cylinders. Pathogenicgerms, as well as the dangerous legionella(illustr. 3), may multiply in these bio films. The formation of these bio films is suppor-ted by stagnating water and low flow veloci-ties. Temperatures between 30-45°C (sometimeseven lower temperatures) support the deve-lopment of microorga-nisms. An excessiveheat loss in the system caused by low flowvelocities or an insufficient insulation, deadpipe sections, temperature layers in hotwater storage cylinders, cold water which iswarmed up by adjoining hot water pipes –all this may support the increase of germs. Design

During design and construction of potablewater installations it must be ensured that- a sufficient flow in all parts of the system

is guaranteed- the water volume is as low as possible

and that the water is exchanged as oftenas possible

- the hot water temperature does not dropbelow 57°C at the draw off points, notbelow 55°C at the end of the circulationpipe and that is does not exceed 25°C inadjoining cold water pipes (pipe insulati-on, water exchange!)

Design and calculation of a hygienically safepotable water installation according to theapproved rules of technology are based onthe following standards and directives:- DIN EN 806-3 (calculation of the inner

pipe diameter)- DIN 1988-300 (dimensioning of the pipe-

work for cold and hot potable water)- DVGW work sheets “W 551” and “W 553”

(dimensioning of the circulation pipes)- VDI 6023 (hygienically safe design, reali-

sation, operation and maintenance ofpotable water installations)

- Decree for Potable Water (decree regar-ding the quality of water for human con-sumption)

Distribution system

The Oventrop distribution system includingcirculation prevents stagnation in hot waterinstallations.A new cold water circulation (see page 16)with the corresponding circulation regulatingvalves “Aquastrom K” serves to prevent sta-gnation in a cold water pipework. Warmingup of the cold water is reduced. Should thecold water temperature exceed the requiredtemperature due to system related factors, the cold water installation may be chilled.

Complete system for potable water installations

The Oventrop system for potable waterinstallations is a co-ordinated system comp-lying with the valid standards and theDecree for Potable Water. The components of the potable water instal-lation enable a technically perfect hot waterpreparation, an optimum potable water cir-culation with a correct flow and water sam-pling at the prescribed points of the potablewater installation. Last but not least, the used materials guarantee a hygienically safepotable water quality.

Hot water preparation

The “Regumaq” stations prepare the hotwater according to the continuous flow prin-ciple. The water is only heated when it isneeded, i.e. “just in time”.A potable water reserve is not necessaryand hygienically safe conditions are guaranteed.

Thermostatic valve “Aquastrom VT” withpresettable residual volume flow for circulation pipes

The bronze valve “Aquastrom VT” is a thermostatic and hydronic regulating valve withpresetting for the residual volume flow inpotable water circulation pipes according toDVGW work sheets W 551/ W 553.The valve combines two functions:Thermal control:

Max. control range: 50°C up to 65°CRecommendedcontrol range: 55°C up to 60°CControl accuracy: ± 1°CDepending on the detected fluid temperature, the volume flow is adjusted in such a way that a presettable temperature (e.g.57°C) is maintained at a constant level.Additionally, the valve supports thermaldisinfection by a controlled increase orreduction of the residual volume flow. Hydronic balancing:

To ensure the required volume flow distribution in the circulation system, ahydronic balancing according to DVGWwork sheet W 553 has to be carried out.To meet the temperature requirements ineach riser of the circulation system, theresidual volume flow can be set at the“Aquastrom VT” in each circulation riserirrespective of the set temperature. Thevalve has 6 different presetting positions. The factory setting 6 (DN 15 kv 0.1, DN 20kv 0.3) complies with the specifications ofthe test standard W 554.The “Aquastrom VT” is equipped with anisolating ball valve with back chamberalways filled with water, without deadzone and a thermometer for the control ofthe water temperature in the circulationriser. Moreover, the integration into an existing centralised building control system ispossible with the help of a sensor elementPT 1000 (accessory, item no. 420 55 92).The valve is lead lockable and is suppliedwith insulation shells (fire protection classB1).The valve is DVGW, KIWA, SVGW, WRASand VA certified.1,2 “Aquastrom VT” with adjustable hand-wheel for temperature and residual volumeflow, temperature indicator and insulation(extent of supply)3 System illustrationCirculation system with thermostatic valveswith presettable residual volume flow“Aquastrom VT” and double regulating andcommissioning valves “Aquastrom C” tosecure the required volume flow4 Functional scheme and characteristiclines “Aquastrom VT” during operating anddisinfection phase

Thermostatic valve “Aquastrom T plus” withpresetting for circulation pipes

The thermostatic valve “Aquastrom T plus”is preset at works to 57°C and can in mostcases be operated without any additionalsettings. Different circulation temperaturesmay, if necessary, be set within a controlrange of 40°C to 65°C. However, a controlrange of 55°C to 60°C is recommended.Once the temperature exceeds this preset-ting, the volume flow is limited to a fixedresidual volume flow according to W 554.Thermal disinfection(anti-legionella function)

In general thermal disinfection is initiated byraising the temperature of the potable waterto above 70°C within the complete system. At approximately 6°C above the temperatureset on the “Aquastrom T plus”, the residualvolume flow is increased to the disinfectionvolume flow. As the temperature continuesto increase to approx. 73°C, the volume flowis throttled again to the residual volume flow. This way, the hydronic balance is also main-tained during the disinfection phase. The preset value may even be read off withthe lockshield cap mounted. Limitation of the volume flow/regulation of risers

The thermostatic valve “Aquastrom T plus”works automatically. The maximum flow canbe limited with the help of a double regula-ting and commissioning valve in the lastriser. The limit stop of the presetting is kepteven if the double regulating and commis-sioning valve is closed for maintenancework. After having removed the thermometer, the isolated riser can easily be drained using the integrated drain valve with hose connection.Models:

The bronze thermostatic valve “Aquastrom Tplus” for circulation pipes is available in sizeDN 15/DN 20/ DN 25 with female or malethreaded connection on both ports. Thevalve has no dead zone and complies toDVGW W 554.- Fire protection class B 1- Thermal conductivity = 0.04 W/m.K- Max. temperature 90°CThe valve is DVGW, KIWA, SVGW, WRASand ACS certified.

Double regulating and commissioning valve “Aquastrom C”

Oventrop double regulating and commis-sioning valves “Aquastrom C” are installedin the circulation pipes of potable watersystems and serve to achieve a hydronicbalance between the various circuits. The volume flows to be set at the “Aqua-strom C” result from the calculation accor-ding to DVGW work sheet W 553.The balance is achieved by a reproduciblepresetting. The valve is installed in the circulation risers. When installing the thermostatic valves“Aquastrom VT” in the individual circulationrisers, the double regulating and com-missioning valve “Aquastrom C” should beinstalled in the furthest and thus hydrauli-cally underprivileged risers. This is forsafety reasons if the required temperatureat the circulation point is not achieved andneeds readjusting according to DVGWwork sheet W 553.The valve body is made of bronze; thestem and disc are made of brass resistantto dezincification (DZR).Advantages:- precise presetting of even very low volu-

Implementation of the Decree for PotableWater

The Decree for Potable Water includes theobligation to examine the potable water forlegionella. The operator of a public potablewater installation or a large commercialinstallation in which aerosol develops (deve-lopment of vapour) has to have the installa-tion inspected at regular intervals (§ 14,paragraph 3). Almost all rented flats in multiple dwellings are subject to thisinspection duty. According to the DVGW work sheet W 551,large installations are defined as follows:- Installations with a hot water storage

cylinder content of more than 400 litresand/or

- Installations with a pipework content ofmore than 3 litres from the hot water prepa-ration to the draw off point

The Decree for Potable Water refers to theDVGW work sheet W 551 which prescribesthe following sampling points for an initialexamination:- one sampling point at the exit of the hot

water preparation- one sampling point at the re-entry of the

circulation pipe- one sampling point at the end of each

riser (e.g. tap at the hand wash basin)- if required, an additional sampling point

should be installed at the cold water entrypoint of the building

The water samples in the building can betaken at the usual draw off points. Watersampling valves are installed at the entryand exit of the hot water preparation. There-fore the requirements of the Decree forPotable Water with regard to the initial legio-nella examination are met by installing threewater sampling valves. Oventrop offers the water sampling valve“Aquastrom P” sized G 1/4 and G 3/8 toexamine the potable water for germs andbacteria. The valve body is made of bronzeand the discharge elbow of stainless steel. The valve with metal to metal seal is flameresistant and can thus be disinfected. AllOventrop free-flow, KFR and FR valves aswell as ball valves and double regulating andcommissioning valves for potable water canbe equipped with water sampling valves. For further questions regarding water sam-pling points and water sampling, pleasecontact your local Public Health Authorities. 1 Water sampling points for initial examinati-on according to DVGW work sheet W 551,cold water sampling point recommended bythe Federal Environment Office. 2 Flame resistant water sampling valve“Aquastrom P” for hygienic-microbiologicexamination according to DVGW W 551,Decree for Potable Water and VDI 6023.3 Bronze double regulating and commissio-ning valve “Aquastrom C” with thermometerand insulation with “Aquastrom P”.4 Bronze valve “Aquastrom KFR” as combi-nation free-flow valve with non-return checkvalve and water sampling valve “AquastromP”.

“Regumaq X-30”

The Oventrop “Regumaq X-30” stations areelectronically controlled product assemblieswith heat exchanger for the hygienic heatingof potable water on the flow principle. Thepotable water is only heated when it is needed,i.e.“just in time”. A potable water reserve isthus not necessary.

This product assembly allows an optimumrealization of regenerative pipework concepts:

The station is especially suitable for detachedand semi-detached houses. It is connected to buffer storage cylinders which are heatedup by solar energy, solid fuels, oil or gas.

PN 10 (at 20°C) up to 120°C

Depending on the temperature and the flowvolume on the potable water side (secondarycircuit), the circulation pump on the bufferside (primary circuit) is speed regulated. Theplate heat exchanger can be flushed usingthe fill and drain cocks integrated in the pri-mary and secondary circuit. Due to the turbu-lent flow, a good self-cleaning effect avoidinga contamination is achieved.

The potable water circuit is protected by a 10bar safety valve.

The components of the heat exchangersystem have flat sealing connections, are pre-assembled on a mounting board and leaktested.

“Regumaq XZ-30”The Oventrop station “Regumaq XZ-30” forhot water preparation is identical to the station“Regumaq X-30” but the product assemblyfor the operation of circulation systems isadditionally equipped with a circulation pumpin the potable water circuit. For this reason, the station is especially suitable for largesystems.

The controller is wired with the internal com-ponents and serves to control the followingcirculation functions:

- Operating mode “demand”: The circulationpump is activated if water is drawn off for abrief period

- Operating mode “cycle”: The circulationpump runs according to the set runningand rest periods

- Operating mode “on”: The circulationpump runs permanently

- Operating mode “off”: The circulationpump is switched off

- The operating time can optionally be deter-mined depending on the return temperature

- Three switching points within the corre-sponding operating mode can be program-med each day

4 Draw off capacities (Q secondary) of the“Regumaq” station depending on the bufferstorage cylinder temperature

Example:If a required temperature of 60°C is set at thecontroller, a draw off volume of 30 l/min. (Qsecondary) can be reached with a water tem-perature of 75°C inside the buffer storagecylinder and a volume flow of 27 l/min. in thebuffer circuit.

The primary volume flow is modified by thepump in the storage cylinder circuit which isactivated by the controller.

Cold water circulation

“Aquastrom K“

Chart

A circulation of cold water contributes tohygiene in the system. Stagnation is avoidedand the warming up of water is reduced, therequired maximum temperature of 25°C mightbe maintained by circulation only. If required, further measures (like cooling or flushing) canbe taken.

In general, the cold potable water is not war-med up in the cellar and only slightly in floorlevels as the ambient temperature at theselocations lies below the required temperatureof 25°C (cellar 15°C, storey 21°C). Cold wateris warmed up in the technical centre (tempe-ratures up to 30°C) and in the riser shaftwhere the cold water pipe is often laid next toheating, hot water and circulation pipes (tem-peratures of more than 30°C). Stagnatingwater warms up within a few hours, even ifthe insulation complies with the standards.

Chart: Warming up of potable water in thepipework during stagnation, fluid 15°C, insu-lation 100%

A cold water circulation prevents warming upof partitions. The energy produced duringwarming up spreads into the completesystem. Each time water is drawn off some-where in the system, cold water is supplied tothe system again which is not only of benefitto parts of the system but to the completeinstallation. In cellar pipes, heat is emittedagain by the water.

For hygienic reasons, potable water shouldnot stagnate and not reach/leave certain tem-perature ranges. In hot potable watersystems, this is ensured through the circulati-on. Germs and micro-organisms may, howe-ver, develop in cold water systems too. A cir-culation which prevents stagnation and keepsthe temperature below 25°C may also beinstalled in cold water systems but with lowconsumption, the cold circulation water mighthave to be chilled. The system is flushed ifnot used (according to VDI 6023 for morethan 3 days). Depending on the conditions inthe system, the potable water hygiene is gua-ranteed by combining 2 or 3 measures.

- circulation- cooling- flushing“Aquastrom K”Thermostatic cold water regulating valve“Aquastrom K” for thermal balance of coldwater circulation pipes. The valve features anisolating facility. If the valve is open, a mini-mum flow is guaranteed. If the set temperatu-re is exceeded, the valve opens up to a largerflow rate. Using the accessories of the “Aqua-strom UP” product range, the valve can alsobe used for flush-mounting installation or indry-build systems.

Cooling

If the cold water reaches the maximum permissible temperature, it is cooled downwith the help of a chiller and a heat exchanger. As the temperature difference between thefluid and the surroundings is much lower incold water systems than in hot watersystems, less energy is required for cooling.

Flushing

A cold water system with circulation can beflushed quite easily. Depending on the pipelengths, the fresh water which is added tothe system distributes quite evenly. Flushing(primary flushing operation) is carried out ata central location (not at each riser) of thecirculation system. The valves have to beflushed, too (secondary flushing operation).

In housing construction (circulation does notreach the storey), the individual dwelling hasto be flushed when it is unoccupied as it isquite unlikely that the complete building isunoccupied.

Example of the application:

Installation of a potable water system withcold water circulation in a retirement homewith 60 rooms. If required, the circulatingcold water is cooled down via a chiller withheat exchanger. A cold water circulationvalve “Aquastrom K” is installed at the entryof each system. The pipework is insulatedaccording to DIN 1988-200.

The cooling capacity is only needed temporarily as the temperature is maintainedat the required level by the normal drain offoperations. Essentially, cooling is only carriedout overnight. In this pipework with a coldwater and circulation pipe of 1500 m, an average cooling capacity of 1 Watt per pipemeter is required. The required cooling capacitythus amounts to 1.5 kW. The required coolingenergy amounts to about 9 kWh per day.

“DynaTemp CW-BS” is a bus basedsystem for automatic thermal balancingand thermal disinfection in potable watercirculation systems according to DVGWwork sheets W 551 and W 553.The regulating valves “Aquastrom DT” withelectromotive actuators are connected tothe C-bus via the bus application fieldmodules. The integrated web server allows accessto the system via a PC and a standard webbrowser. Settings of the installation para-meters (e.g. time profiles) and queries ofseparation data, current status and disin-fection records can be carried out via themenu. An external 24 V transformer should beused for the power supply. The installation hydraulics which governsthe maintenance of an adequate potablewater circulation temperature (according toDVGW 57°C) is optimized by the stations.Temperature detection is carried out by theOventrop valve “Aquastrom DT” for pota-ble water circulation systems. The sensortemperatures are transmitted to the controlunits via the bus based field module andthe control demands for the “AquastromDT” are transmitted to the actuators by the“DynaTemp CW-BS” via the field module.Thermal disinfection is also controlled viathe control unit. The latter transmits a start-ing signal to the boiler control; the potablewater temperature is increased and thermaldisinfection of the risers of the circula-tion installation is carried out. The controlunit can be connected to the centralisedbuilding control system for monitoring andvisualisation purposes.
