Completion Fluids | Care
for the Oilfield
Industry As the oilfield industry is soaring new heights
with each passing day owing to the increase in
demand of the petroleum based products
today, simultaneously, the need of completion
fluids is also escalating with same pace.
Amongst the completion fluids, the most
commonly used components are Completion
14.2™, Completion 12.5™ and Completion
19.2™. Consequently, there is a rising
demand for the preparation of these chemical
components or rather the completion fluids in
order to cater to the needs of the oilfield
industry for carrying out the drilling
operations required in oil and gas exploration
projects.

Useful Fluids:
Generally, the brine solutions of zinc, sodium and calcium blended with bromides
and chlorides are useful for such oil drilling purposes because of the high density
and solids-free nature of such solutions. Quite a similar composition is therefore
maintained in the preparation of the completion fluids.
Specification of Completion 14.2™:
The Completion 14.2™, which is chemically a calcium bromide solution (52%) is
a common completion fluid used extensively as a completion and work-over fluid
for controlling the wellbore pressures during the upstream oil and gas exploration
operations. It can be used as a single solution as well as mixed with calcium
chloride and/or zinc/calcium bromide in order to get a clear and solids-free fluid
that is prepared over a varied range of density and crystallization temperatures. It is
usually a colorless liquid and sometimes a light yellow transparent liquid having a
specific gravity of 1.70 grams/cm.cube and a density of 14.2lbs/gal. It is a water
soluble component and is also available as dry powder on request.

Fluids for Drilling Purposes:
Another Major Completion Fluids popularly used in Oil and Gas Drilling
exploration projects is the Completion 12.5™ fluid. Chemically, this is sodium
bromide solution (45%), having a formula of NaBr.nH2O. Apart from serving as a
completion and work-over fluid for drilling purposes, its other characteristics
include:
It is colorless, odorless and transparent liquid, resembling sodium chloride
solution.
It is used as a single salt and is applicable in those purposes where the
density requirement ranges within 8.4lbs/gal to 12.8lbs/gal and where the
formation waters have high amount of bicarbonate and sulfate ions.
In addition to being used as a single-salt solution, this can also be used in
collection with the sodium chloride solutions to get an optimum density
range of 12.8lbs/gal. In fact, keeping in mind the economic factors for the oil
and gas exploration projects, the NaBr/NaCl multi-salt solution is more
beneficial than that of the single-salt counterpart.
Powder form of the chemical can be given on request.

Apart from the above two, there is another Completion Fluid in the run, which is
known as the Completion 19.2™. It is actually zinc bromide solution and
chemically composed of two types of salts, namely the Calcium Bromide & Zinc
Bromide Solutions. Similar to the other completion fluids, this is also a clear and
solids-free liquid having a density of around 19.2lbs/gal. Along with these features,
it is also non-damaging, thermally and chemically stable and can be used as a
multi-salt additive.
Hence, all these completion fluids are in high demand and therefore manufactured
in plenty.
