COMPLEX SENTENCE

A complex sentence is formed when you join a main clause and a subordinate clause with a connective. A subordinate clause is one that relies on a main clause to make sense.

Structure

Example

Stay in the room until the phone rings. I broke my leg when I was ten years old. I didn’t pass the test because I was too lazy to study. We can’t get to island unless we sail. I need arrive at my house before my mom arrives.

COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCES

A compound-complex sentence combines the compound and the complex sentence. The 'compound' part means that it has two or more complete sentences. The 'complex' part means that it has at least one incomplete sentence.

- Contains 2 independent clauses & 1 dependent clause.

- Put a comma after the dependent clause if it begins the sentence.

- Put a comma before the and, but, or or that connects the 2 independent clauses.

Structure

Independent clause+ dependent clause+ independent clause Dependent clause+ independent clause+ independent clause.

Example

Charlie could not hear his watch because it had stopped, and he was worried. Because it had stopped, Charlie could not hear his watch, and he was worried. Although Sara called out for Charlie, no one answered, and Sara was scared. Sara could not see Charlie, but when she was on the hilltop she could hear him cry
