Weather based agro advisory bulletin Main crops Stage Agricultural Advisories
General
Take up the repair of torn up bunds and small check dams, in order to reduce the runoff and the
soil erosion.
Those farmers with new plantation, must collect soil samples from their fields for nutrient
analysis to be taken to the nearest Krishi Vigyan kendras or the department of Agriculture
Depending upon the prevailing local weather situation, farmers are advised to harvest their
mango fruits as early as possible in order to avoid any injury, which otherwise affects the quality
of the produce and also the marketability.
Farmers are advised to take up deep ploughing, during summer ,which mainly helps in
conservation of soil moisture due to unseasonal rains also destroys the hibernating insect pupae
or the infective stages of fungi.

Steps to overcome water stress in sugarcane In case of paired row system of cane planting, Sugarcane trash must be deployed in furrows leaving another furrow blank helpful in providing irrigation. 1 kg of microbial decomposer can be used to decompose 1 tonne of sugarcane trash. During the last irrigation, provide 50kg potash for 1 hectare and close all the furrows with trash.
During water stress, spray the crop with 2.5 per cent of Urea or Muriate of potash at an interval of 15-20 days.
Vegetables
(Cabbage)
Vegetativ
e
Aphid infestation in cabbage can be managed by spraying the crop with malathion 50EC at the
rate of 2ml per litre of water at 2,4, 6, & 8th week after transplanting
Tomato Vegetativ
e/Fruiting
Tomato serpentine leaf miner infestation can be effectively controlled by using neem based
insecticide such as NSKE 5% (50 ml dissolved in 1 litre of water) or 1.7 ml dimethoate per liter
of water.
In case of whitefly infestation can also be managed by using Triazophos 2.5 ml or 2 ml
profenophos dissolved in one liter of water.

Disease
Anthracnose:
Symptoms
These enlarge and cause girdling and drying of the affected area. The disease appears on young
leaves, stem, inflorescence and fruits.
Black spots appearing on skin of the affected fruits gradually become sunken and coalesce.
Management
Spray Pseudomonas fluorescens (FP 7) at 3 weeks interval @ 5g/litre on flower branches. 5-7 sprays
one to be given on flowers and bunches. Before storage, treat with hot water, (50-55°C) for 15
minutes or dip in Benomyl solution (500ppm) or Thiobendazole (1000ppm) for 5 minutes.
Pest
Fruit fly:
An ecofriendly integrated management of fruit fly in mango has been standardized, which is
mentioned below .
1. 45 days before harvest, the following precautions need to be taken
2. Destroy all fallen fruits at weekly intervals
3. Install six methyl eugenol plywood traps per acre.
4. Plough the soil at the tree basin at frequent intervals.
5. Three weeks before the harvest, spray Decamethrin 2.8 ec @ 0.5 ml/l + Azadirachtin (0.3%) 2 ml/lt
and take up timely harvest.
6. If fruit fly is very serious (> 5/surveillance trap), give bait sprays on the tree trunks at weekly
interval: (bait spray is prepared by mixing 100g of jaggery in one litre of water to which 2 ml of
Deltamethrin (2.8 ec) is added).
The harvested fruits may be treated with hot water for 1 hour at 48o C.

Management
Algal leaf spot can be reduced by maintaining tree vigor with cultural techniques such as proper
fertilization and irrigation, proper pruning to enhance air circulation within the canopy and
sunlight penetration, managing weeds and wider tree spacing.
Managing insect, mite and other foliar diseases increases tree vigor and lessens susceptibility to this
disease. Spray Copper oxychloride 0.25%.
Pomegranate
Plant protection
1. Cercospora fruit Spot:
The pathogen spread through wind borne conidia.
Management
Spraying Mancozeb 2.0 gram per litre of water at 15 days interval gives good control of the
disease.
2. Stem rot / Foot rot
Management
Drenching with Copper oxychloride 0.25 % or Bordeaux mixture 1% or Metalaxyl 0.1%.
MAY MONTH CALENDAR OF OPERATIONS FOR ARECANUT CULTIVATION
Nursery:
Watering may be continued. Shade may be reduced in the nursery on receipt of one to two good summer showers.
Young garden:
1. Selection of site and laying out for new plantation
2. Pits of 60 cubic centimetres should be taken 2-3 weeks before planting to ward off the field heat.
While digging top and bottom of soils should be heaped separately. Pit should be half filled with top soil and
bottom soil and 5-10 kg Farm YARD Manure (FYM) on e week before planting. Seedlings should be planted in
the centre of th pit, pressed around, mulched and shaded.
Old garden:
1. If first dose of fertilizers were not given during April, it can be given in May in irrigated arecanut gardens.
2. Application of first dose of fertilizers to supply 35 g nitrogen, 15 g phosphorus and 5 g potassium per palm can be
taken up in rainfed gardens after receipt of sufficient showers.
3. Irrigated palms during hot and dry periods at regular intervals of 3-5 days depending upon the soil type and
availability of water for irrigation
4. Sow seeds of green manure cover crops in April-May with onset of pre-monsoon rains. These crops may be cut and
intercropped during 45-60 days after sowing or before flowering stage.
5. Before the onset of south-west monsoon, dried leaves and diseased palms should removed.
6. Control root grub
MAY MONTH AGRO ADVISORY CALENDAR FOR LIVESTOCK FARMERS
1. Temperatures are high during this month and some areas experience severe dust storms accompanied by thunder
showers
2. Heat related diseases in animals that can be seen to affect animals during this time are fever, dehydration, decrease
in body salts, loss of appetite and decrease in productivity
3. Animals should be protected from the heat and strom, hot and dry summer afternoon winds
4. Adequate efforts should be made for fodder collection/purchase and storage for periods of shortage
5. To avoid loss of essential body salts in animals ensure that a salt mixture in appropriate quantity is mixed with the
feed and water and given to animals
6. Depending upon the season, the content of the animal feed should be changed. At this time increase the quantity of
jowar stalk in the feed
7. Give dairy animals a balanced feed so that their milk production capacity is enhanced
8. Deworming of animals should be carried out
9. Maize, perennial grasses and other fodder species should be harvested now
10. Sheep should be sheared during this month
SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION
The productivity of any crop mainly depends on two natural resources- land and water in addition to
management practices. Therefore the conservation, up gradation and utilization of these two natural
resources on scientific principles is essential for the sustainability of rainfed agriculture.
Soil losses apart from removing fertile top soil, reduce the rooting depth and adversely affect moisture
storage and thereby the crop yields.
Contour Bunding
Contour bunding is the construction of small bund across the slope of the land on a contour so that the long
slope is cut into a series of small ones and each contour bund acts as a barrier to the flow of water, thus
making the water to walk rather than run, at the same time impounding water against it for increasing
soil moisture.
Contour bunds divide the length of the slope, reduce the volume of runoff water, and thus preventing or
minimizing the soil erosion.
Contour bunds are constructed in relatively low rainfall areas, having an annual rainfall or less than 600
mm, particularly in areas having light textured soils. For rolling and flatter lands having slopes from 2 to
6% contour bunding is practiced, in red soils.
