Waste is the most plentiful, richand unexhausted natural resource in the world. It is a by-product of human consumption. If we do not acknowledge the need and do not utilize wasteas a valuable resource, there is a real

danger of unsettling the balance of the ecosystem.

Composting is the way forward !!!

    Why composting?

A reduction in the quantity of wasteComposting is a method of stabilizing waste. In the process of composting, 2/3 of the carbonis metabolized as energy and CO2. Compostingalso reduces humidity. Consequently, from20.000 tons of waste material we obtain 10.000tons of compost.

Composting is recyclingThe ecological aspect of composting isan indisputable fact. From waste we retrievenutrients and organic material singularlynecessary in, among other fields, agriculture.Unwanted waste becomes a sought-afterproduct.

An economic enterpriseComposting brings a reduction in the economiccosts of sludge. In the case of the Supsk

WWTP there has been a reduction of 30%.

A transfer of proven technologyIt is difficult to describe composting as a noveltechnology. Composting is a technologicallyproven process, functioning well in the climaticconditions of Poland.

Social costsThe production of sludge constitutes 22% of allmunicipal waste arising in the city of Supsk. The deposit of waste in storage areas curtailsits term of usage, and therefore influences thecosts of building new storage areas with

taxpayer's money.Composting promotes the development ofsegregationThe functioning of composting in Supsk has soresulted that, in the process of beingcomposted, green waste has been segregatedat the point of origin. The free collection of cleanwaste for composting has made it so, thatsegregation has become very commerciallyviable for producers of this type of waste.

Accordance of the project with international, national, provincial and regional

environmental projectsFrom the EU directive, through the ecologicalpolicy of the Republic of Poland, provincial andlocal environmental programs, and finally in theprograms of action of ecological funds, composting, as a form of recycling, has priorityeverywhere. Preparing the financial propositionsto the ecological funds may with ease indicatethe compatibility of this enterprise with the eco-development strategies at every levelof administration and organization.

The location of compostingWastewater treatment plant, in which the

majority of waste material is produced, are thebest locations for composting. Anotherimportant point is the technological andlaboratory services together with social, administration and logistical facilities whichalready function at treatment plant.

    Elements of the controlledtechnological process

    1. Reception of the compost materialsPractically any organic waste receptive tobiological biodegradation, and not contaminatedabove normal levels with heavy metals may becomposted.

    2. FragmentationThe delivered green waste is collected ina designated box, and is next fragmented in theJENZ AZ 30-80 into pieces of 1-7cm.

    3. Formation of the initial prismExamined in the laboratory, the materials, according to composition, are mixed inappropriate proportions by the loader. The proportion is determined on the basisof humidity and the C/N ratio of that particularmaterial. To the initial prism is added a fractionof the waste from the sieve.

4.The hot phase of the compostingAccording to the climatic conditions, this phaselasts 4-8 weeks. The compost mixture issubjected in this time to intensive rotation bya specialised machine, the BACKHUS 15.50,with the specified purpose of stirring thecompost materials, homogenisation, airing andloosening.Daily monitoring is conducted ofthe temperature in the prisms and inaccordance with the technological conditionsthe prism is rotated at a rate of 1-3 timesa week.

5.Sieving of the fresh compostThe sieving of the compost after the hot phasetakes place in the TIM 2000 sieve throughperforations of 20mm. A small fraction of thewaste is brought to maturation, the waste isreprocessed. This process has the aim of categorising thecompost, and recovering the material which isnot broken down into a suitable form, which

is equally valuable material for injecting intothe material of the prisms.

6.Maturation of the compostThe sieved raw material is stored in coveredboxes for 4-6 months. In this time it is rotated1-2 times a month by the loader with the aim ofeliminating intense oxidisation. The maturecompost is characterised by stablephysicochemical parameters tested in the workslaboratory.

7.Laboratory supervisionThe Supsk WWTP is equipped withprofessional analytical laboratory. Examinationsare performed on a range of works norms, incorporating investigations into theconcentrations of heavy metals by the ASAmethod. Testing is conducted at every stageof controlled composting process. Data arerecorded in reports and on certificates for eachindividual prism.

    8.Supervised distribution of the compost

The mature compost is marketed under thetrade name of BIOTOP. The recipient receivestogether with the compost full documentationconcerning the procedure of the productionprocess of that given batch of compost, andinstructions for application and attestation. We also provide free agro-technical consultationfor our greatest recipients incorporating control

of the efficacy of fertilisation.9.Tailoring of the compostIt is a forecast option for implementation inthe coming years. We want to formulate acommercial offer for packaged compost toclients' special requirements, for instance forthe cultivation of acidophilic plants, flowers, etc.
