Answers Here we have some guidance to help you, as parents, to be fair and reasonable when marking this comprehension activity. Here you will find the answers that you should accept as correct; the place in the passage that supports this answer and the reasoning behind the answer.

1. The three travellers are Phileas Fogg, Sir Francis Cromarty and Passepartout (who is Phileas Fogg’s man – servant). [Lines 5 and 6]

4 along the cars calling out, "The passengers will get out here!" 5 Phileas Fogg looked at Sir Francis Cromarty, who appeared not to understand 6 this stop in the midst of a forest of tamarinds and acacias. Passepartout, not 7 less surprised rushed on to the track and returned almost immediately, crying,

It is a little tricky to see who the 3 passengers are because they are not all collectively named as the passengers but if you read the passage through you will notice that they are the only 3 names mentioned, other than the conductor.

2. The time when the train stopped was at eight o'clock in the morning. [Line 1]

1 At eight o'clock in the morning, and fifteen miles before they reached Rothal, 2 the train stopped in the midst of an immense opening, on the edge of which

This is the very first thing that is mentioned in the story on the first line.

3. The conductor of the train told all of the passengers to get off the train. [Line 3 to 4]

3 were some bungalows and workmen's huts. The conductor of the train passed 4 along the cars calling out, "The passengers will get out here!"

Here, on Lines 3 and 4, it clearly shows the conductor directing passengers off the train.

4. The name of the hamlet where the train came to a halt was Kholby.

[Line 15]

14 "Where are we?" asked Sir Francis Cromarty. 15 "At the hamlet of Kholby," replied the conductor. 16 "We stop here?"

This line shows the conductor informing Sir Francis Cromarty of their whereabouts, in a hamlet called Kholby.

5. The train was unable to go any further because the railway was not finished. [Lines 17 and 19 to 20]

19 "No! There is still a section of fifty miles to construct between this point and 20 Allahabad, where the track commences again".

The conductor tells Sir Francis Cromarty that the train will be stopping because the railway is unfinished, and here is the section showing where he expands on this.

6. The railway line began again at Allahabad. [Line 20]

Sir Francis Cromarty asks the conductor why the train has stopped and this section shows his answer, in which he states that the railway line recommences at Allahabad.

7. There was a gap of fifty miles of track missing. [Line 19]

On Line 19, when the conductor is explaining to Sir Francis Cromarty why the train has stopped he states that there is a 50 mile gap in the railway line from Kholby to Allahabad.

19 "No! There is still a section of fifty miles to construct between this point and 20 Allahabad, where the track commences again".

8. I think Sir Francis was annoyed that they had been sold tickets from Bombay to Calcutta because he thought that the entire line was complete, and because of that he was surprised by the change of plan. [Lines 21 to 24]

21 "But the papers have announced the opening of the entire line". 22 "But, generally, the papers were mistaken". 23 "And you give tickets from Bombay to Calcutta!" replied Sir Francis Cromarty,

These highlighted areas show that Sir Francis Cromarty was under the impression that the track was completed and that he was unaware of the interruption to his journey. He states that he had read in the paper that the entire line was open and that he thought selling tickets from Bombay to Calcutta implied that the train would be continuing for the entire journey.

9. He had read that the line was ‘fully open’ in the newspapers. [Line 21] The clip above (for Question 8) shows on line 21 that Sir Francis Cromarty had read the announcement of the train line opening in the papers.

10. The conductor could have meant that Sir Francis should have known the line was not finished because he was ‘a traveller’. He could also have meant that other passengers, such as local people, know that there is a gap in the line and therefore use alternative methods of transport from Kholby to Allahad. [The question refers to the conductors comment on Lines 25 to 26] As there are two possible answers you should accept either as correct; as long as the child has identified that they sell tickets for the entire journey because people know about the gap in the line. If they have also mentioned that the conductor could be suggesting that Sir Francis should also know about the changes then this is also acceptable.
