“Teacher Sample Questions”

Example: 1 The coke machine sells cokes for 90cents each. The machine only accepts quarters, dimes, and nickels. You are to use exact change. What combination of coins could you use to buy a coke?

Step 1: Start with the largest coin. Quarters (Use skip counting to count how many quarters are in 90 cents). 25, 50 75 You can only use 3 quarters because using 4 will cause you to go over 90 cents. Step 2: Count with the next largest coin. Dimes (You already have 75 cents. Add dimes one at a time, without going over 90 cents. 75 cents + 10 cents=85 cents Step 3: Add the next largest coin. Nickel (85 cents + 5 cents = 90 cents) Step 4: List the coins you used. (3 quarters, 1 dime, and 1 nickel)

Example: 2 Tickets for the bird sanctuary cost $4.75 for adults and $2.35 for children. Mrs. Gallo buys tickets for herself and her 2 children. How much does she spend?

Step 1: What is the question asking? (It is asking for the total spent for 1 adult ticket and 2 children). Step 2: Add the price for the tickets.

$ 4.75 2.35 + 2.35

Step 3: What is the total? (The total price for 1 adult ticket and 2 children is $9.45).
