PRIMARY MEMORY

Types of Primary Memory RAM (Random Access Memory) ROM (Read Only Memory)

Primary memory is the memory which is used to process data. It is generally refers to the volatile memory like RAM.

RAM

RAM is a kind of memory that allows computer to store data for immediate manipulation and to keep track of what is currently being processed. It is that place in the computer system which OS, application program and data, which are currently being used.

ROM

SECONDARY MEMORY

Secondary memory is also called as auxiliary memory is used to provide back up storage for instructions and data. It has much larger capacity than primary memory.

MAGNETIC TAPE

Magnetic tape is like a plastic tape with a magnetic coating on it. The data is stored in the form of tiny segments of magnetized and demagnetized portion on the surface of the material. They are very durable and can be erased as well as reused this tapes are the least expensive and reliable storage medium for organizing archives and taking back up.

MAGNETIC DISK

Magnetic disks are the most widely used and popular storage medium for direct access secondary storage. They offer high storage capacity reliability and have the capability to access the stored data directly.

OPTICAL DISK

An optical disk is a flat, circular, plastic disk coated with material on which bits may be stored in the form of highly reflective areas and significantly less reflective areas, from which the stored data may be read when illuminated with a narrow-beam of laser diode. These disk are capable of storing enormously high amount of data in a limited amount of space.
